Back again with another perplexing issue. I'm trying to run Beryl on LinuxMint, an Ubuntu variant.
Upon the install, it appears that Beryl is ready to use. However, this is a direct conflict with the desktop not showing a thing.
I get a white cube and that's it. I attempted to install the ATI drivers using Envy, but to no avail. That effort affords me a viewable desktop, yet no Beryl functionality.

If anyone has any ideas, please share them with me here. Also, as I write this it dawns on me that the Envy installer may be a part of the issue which I will further research on their page. Correction, I'm finding little to no support b/c that project appears to be in it's infancy. None-the-less, Any help is appreciated.

What Ati card are you attempting to use?

AIW 2006 PCIE.... essentially the x1300 with analog tuner

Have you tried the proprietary drivers yet. ATi drivers. or from Ubuntu's repos?

I had this issue as well the flgrx driver for my ATi card would not support X.Org 7.2. There are a few fixes to this

• Try GATOS drivers here
  
• Downgrade X.org to 7.1
  
• Downgrade your install (I dropped from F7 to FC6), far easier then trying #2 (#2 tends to break your install)
  
• Give in and buy an nVidia card (Unified Driver Architecture is a gift from God)

IMO 3-4 arent fixes but they were suggested to me when I was having a similar issue

So did you ever get beryl up and running? I finally got my F6 box using it today and its awesome (putting Vistas Aero to shame as we speak). If you can make it work for you its well worth the trouble to turn it on every once and a while just to see the pretties.

Somewhat on topic, I'm really impressed with how easy it was to install Beryl into the standard current versions of Ubuntu (feisty), especially compared to the hoops you had to jump through in previous versions.

I literally just had to go up to the system panel, turn on the restricted 3D drivers (included), and run an apt-get install command for the Beryl package.
That was it.

In fedora core 6 its a little differant. (using nvidia hardware)
Pre step ensure you are running the i686 kernel
1)Install livna or freshrpms repos (livna is best)
2) I use yumXtender to install the proprietary drivers and livna_display_configuration tool and allow yum to pick up the kmod file as a dependency.
3) install beryl core and a few other items (like emerald theme manager and beryl settings simple)
4) install Compiz (for a change of pace every now and then)
5) reboot X server (cntrl+alt+backspace)
6) configure x server using the livna tool (Applications->System Tools->Livna Display Configuration)
7)Reboot X server again (an nvidia logo should pop up before the login screen does)
8) open beryl settings or beryl settings simple and set your desktop effects up
9) Start beryl (Applications->System Tools->Beryl)

from there you should be moving and grooving in style (be sure to so your windows using friends)

I will make a full How to for both distros later (FC6 and Ubuntu) later if anyone wants it but both FedoraForums and Ubuntu Forums have it well covered

I believe Compiz is already present in Ubuntu 7.04 as it is SUSE, Ubuntu refers to it as "desktop effects".

yeah but its just the Compiz base. Theres a few more packages that go with it.

What are the other packages that go with it

Lucky I reinstalled Ubuntu and got it running yesterday (one long night, you know). Do a search for Compiz in Synaptic (or your package manager of choice) there may be more or less
