It's a "trick" that many techs use to recover data from a drive that has failed.
Obviously, it won't work if there is a problem with the electro-mechanical elements of the drive, but if it is just the electronics that have failed, this is a relative easy fix - as long as you can find the correct version of the board.
I recovered the data off of an old IBM Deskstar using that method. Of course, the fact that many techs called them "deathstars", may be why I didn't have any problem finding the correct match.

I admire such dedication in someone who wants to save their game files. Can't blame him really, he probably spent many, many hours on game saves in that hard drive. I wouldn't want to throw it away either.
