I'm running Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit. Windows Update prompts me to update to Internet Explorer 11, but I get error message 9c47. None of the prompts actually help.

I looked for answers and was told to open a command prompt and do "sfc /scannow," After running the scan, prompt reads " Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are available in the CBS.log file..."

The file is hundreds of pages long, so copy and paste is kind of tough, and it's 69.5MB text file, so I can't attach it. Anyone have a solution? The computer has been running slowly over the past few days. I update my computer regularly and I've run the MSE full virus scan with no issues.

I'm also having an issue where, whenever I go to "Turn Windows features on or off" the dialog box is empty.

I've also tried:

- Rebooting/clearing up the Windows Update (as described here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058/en-us)

- Doing a chkdsk (which I understand is terrible for my SSD, as described here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2641432/en-us)

- Uninstalling the Preview version of Internet Explorer 11

edit: deleted answer: forget that... won't work.

I dunno. It's one hell of a problem.

Try and reinstall ie 11 but not through update. Make sure no updates are pending when this

is done. Then run chkdsk /f.

Have tried several times to reinstall ie11 separate from update. Did so again after running chkdsk /f.

I get error 9c47 when I try through Windows Update.

When I try to update outside Windows Update, the error message says "Internet Explorer did not finish installing"

Also, ran chkdsk, no problems found.

One thing I noticed is that the CPU is running very close to redline, at 71C avg. Check for cooling blockage and dust accumulation, then run task manager to find out if something is overloading the CPU. Running that hot will cause the CPU to slow itself down and might also cause other sporadic failures. Programs like Crash Plan can do that, also. Set task manager to sort on CPU time percentage. Idle process should be the highest by a long shot. Mine runs 90-98% in idle normally, and the CPU temp rarely gets above 40C.

Lemme throw in one more thing. In this current environment, with Cryptolocker running around loose, it's dangerous to have a program like Crash Plan continually backing things up. The reason is that you end up unknowingly backing up damaged or encrypted files. Also, you need a versioning backup system that allows several dated data sets to be stored so you can go back a set or two to find good data.

Also, Cryptolocker will go after any storage volume your machine has access to. This includes internal drives, externals, USB sticks, NAS and SAN systems, and any other computer or drive on your network, if you use one. Also the price to decrypt is 2 Bitcoins within the 72 hour deadline, or 10 Bitcoins if you're late. At over $200 each, that's a hell of a lot of money. Back up wisely, and keep all unnecessary storage devices turned off and offline until needed.

Unless I have heavy data file loads every day, which rarely happens, I will back everything up once or twice a week, as long as I know the data is good. I have one plug-in drive for the OS, and another for data files. The OS drive gets an Acronis backup once a week (8 minutes) plus it gets cloned to another drive, and the data drive gets synchronized with a second and third drive by means of "Beyond Compare" (5 minutes each). The third drive, the OS clone drive, and a copy of the Acronis file, goes in the bank. Your mileage may vary. Three weeks of backups are maintained. The Acronis files and the data sets all go on one 2TB external stored at the bank with another at home fer jist in case.

Cryptolocker is a strange animal. It infects your machine, then can spend as much as 10 hours grabbing and encrypting your files before the bomb gets dropped. The files never leave your machines but the encrypted versions get stored wherever there's room until it's finished. Then the originals are killed and the encrypted ones substituted. That 10 hours is indicated by extremely heavy CPU and disk loading and can be caught if you stay diligent. Perhaps the disk filling up could also be a red flag.

I don't know the exact mechanism or process names used, but they will be strange, as compared to normal operation. Another good reason to keep a process monitor running. Sysinternals, perhaps?

BTW, antivirus programs can certainly kill the virus, BUT, doing so also kills your access to the program to set up payment and get the decryption key, which they actually do send. Nasty bug, that one. Offline, versioned, backups are about the only recourse.

If I'm not mistaken, Steve Gibson, in the program "Security Now" on TWiT.TV, in the last couple of weeks, went into excruciating detail on what Cryptolocker was doing and how it did it. Pretty interesting stuff.

Sorry about the diatribe. Wanted to get those warnings out.

Davnel - I have offline varied backup sets--Crashplan has a pack rat feature. I have a different backup set w/Crashplan for every 15 minutes.

But I'll def. take the advice to go out and get a can of spray air/check out power consumption.

Steve Gibson is a well known, speculated to be charlatan... 1/2 truth and 1/2 lies and 1/2 speculation are his specialty. Interesting guy, but accused of fraud many many times and little respected in security circles.

I've known Steve for over 20 years and he's anything BUT a liar or a charlatan. I have never known him to tell anything but the solid truth. As for his rep, I think you'll find him very well respected here in the USA. You boys spend too much time living upside down and chasing roos.

Lol... I'm glad that you know him so well, as I have no personal knowledge of the man.

I have read some in depth articles though, like...

http://allthatiswrong.wordpress.com/2009/10/11/steve-gibson-is-a-fraud/

https://groups.google.com/forum/?hl=en#!original/comp.dcom.xdsl/Vm2xVSu6prk/jpfCIyPj7poJ

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2002/02/25/steve_gibson_invents_broken_syncookies/

http://www.vmyths.com/resource.cfm_id=59&page=1

I have no personal humble opinion of you, but to find that you respect him says much about you despite what I think.

EDIT: But like I said before, it is all just speculation. Maybe the security groups are just jealous of him. DefCon guys & whitehat clique just can't take the heat so don't invite him to for coffee.

My apologies for the (removed) flame. I read the articles. I don't know if they are true or just opinion. I hope they aren't true.
