Hi Thanks for all the good work you do this is a great site for many things related to Bleeping Computers.

I told a coworker that I would look at his net book cause he thought he had a virus. In most instances I usually check for issues by running Malware

Bytes and CCleaner which seem to always clear most issues up. When I ran these programs it helped, but it found like 8 objects in Malware Bytes. I thought that was an unusual number so I looked in the programs and saw something called Vuze. I assumed that was the problem just from experience so I researched it and found it is associated with the spigot virus. I found a thread on here that had some steps for removing it using combo fix.

I have ran all these programs in consexutive order (combo fix, Malware Bytes, and CCleaner) the computer is running better and the browser seems to not be redirecting to other sites.

I just want to make sure before I give it back that there isn't something else I should check first. I thought that running Hijack this may help but am not sure how to read the log

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Hello duddymon

I would like to welcome you to the Malware Removal section of the forum.

Around here they call me Gringo and I will be glad to help you with your malware problems.

Very Important --> Please read this post completely, I have spent my time to put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier, faster and smoother for both of us!

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the "Follow This Topic" Button, make sure that the "Receive notification" box is checked and that it is set to "Instantly" - This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

I need to get some reports to get a base to start from so I need you to run these programs first.

-Download DDS-
  • Please download DDS from one of the links below and save it to your desktop:

    dds_scr.gif
Download DDS and save it to your desktop

    Link1
    Link2
    Link3
    • Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
    • Shortly after two logs will appear:
      • DDS.txt
      • Attach.txt
    • A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
    • Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
    • Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Hi thanks for responding

I guess I should give a little more detailed timeline of events which may help more.

When I first got the computer I checked for updates then I looked in the programs list and saw a few things that seemed suspect YTD toolbar and Vuze. I downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials, Ccleaner, and Malware bytes and ran them. MBAM found 8 malicious items so I did my research on Vuze and found the spigot virus info. I have a bad habit of running lots of programs so I ran Combofix and Hitman pro and a few more(TDS killerRootkill, and Hijack This). I uninstalled the suspicious programs and it seemed to be better. However it is still running slow on login and takes a while to load IE, but it is not redirecting anymore. I read that spigot is hard to get rid of so I posted here to make sure I got it.

I ran the programs you suggested and will attach the logs. After I ran them though a flood of updates installed and the computer would not boot properly. I launched system repair and believe it reverted back to before the updates. once I got logged in after the repair it had 30 more updates. We will see if that is the problem if it does it again.

Here are the logs

thanks for your help

I believe the updates have helped a lot. login is faster and IE is loading much quicker.

I will wait to hear back before I do anything else. It seems like something was blocking the system from doing updates.

Hello duddymon

For now I would like to have the Combofix report.

That is a very bad habit - running these tools on your own, if something was to go wrong then it is very hard to get help.

Yeah I know sometimes the best way to learn is trial and error. I am pretty good with computers and always make multiple backups. I try to learn something new everyday.

Here is the Combo report

thanks

Hello duddymon

At this time I would like you to run this script for me and it is a good time to check out the computer to see if there is anything else that needs to be addressed.

:Run CFScript:

Please start by opening Notepad and copy/paste the text in the box into the window:

ClearJavaCache::

Save it to your desktop as CFScript.txt

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
CFScriptB-4.gif
This will let ComboFix run again.
Restart if you have to.
Save the produced logfile to your desktop.

Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you receive an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

"information and logs"
  • In your next post I need the following
    • report from Combofix
    • let me know of any problems you may have had
    • How is the computer doing now after running the script?
Gringo

The computer seems to be running about the same as before this last combo fix run.

No problems during this run.

I think the computer may be about as good as it's going to get. but we can keep going if you wanna try something else.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

I see that you have MBAM installed - That is great!! and at this time I would like you to update it and run me a quick scan
  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
    • If you accidentally close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

At this point I think the computer is running much better so I will probably post these reports and call it a day unless you see anything alarming.

I appreciate the help. I was on the right path which is good to know.

Greetings

These are the last set of scans

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded start-up entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.
  • Run HijackThis (rightclick and run as admin)
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdatePRCShortCut] "C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Recovery\MUITransfer\MUIStartMenu.exe" "C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Recovery" UpdateWithCreateOnce "Software\CyberLink\PowerRecover"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateLBPShortCut] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\LabelPrint\MUITransfer\MUIStartMenu.exe" "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\LabelPrint" UpdateWithCreateOnce "Software\CyberLink\LabelPrint\2.5"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CLMLServer] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\Power2Go\CLMLSvc.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdateP2GoShortCut] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\Power2Go\MUITransfer\MUIStartMenu.exe" "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\Power2Go" UpdateWithCreateOnce "SOFTWARE\CyberLink\Power2Go\6.0"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RemoteControl8] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD8\PDVD8Serv.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [PDVD8LanguageShortcut] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerDVD8\Language\Language.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UpdatePPShortCut] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerProducer\MUITransfer\MUIStartMenu.exe" "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\PowerProducer" UpdateWithCreateOnce "Software\CyberLink\PowerProducer\5.0"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UCam_Menu] "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\YouCam\MUITransfer\MUIStartMenu.exe" "C:\Program Files\CyberLink\YouCam" UpdateWithCreateOnce "Software\CyberLink\YouCam\2.0"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [LGODDFU] "C:\Program Files\lg_fwupdate\lgfw.exe" blrun
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hpqSRMon] C:\Program Files\HP\Digital Imaging\bin\hpqSRMon.exe
