I built a pretty high-end computer two months ago. For about five weeks I had no issues, but then I started getting random periodic freezes. It's not exactly the same every time, and I don't really know how to investigate a total crash. The specs are:

i7 4770K

Asus Sabertooth Z87

Asus GTX 770

16GB DDR3-1600 Crucial RAM

Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD

Windows 8 Professional

The freezes have happened once or twice a week, about seven times now. I'm not running anything computationally taxing or a game or anything when it happens, usually all I have open when the freezes occur are:

Firefox

Notepad++

Pidgin

(sometimes) Steam

(sometimes) Libre Office Calc

(sometimes) KeePass

(sometimes) Media Player Classic Home Cinema

I don't think any process is particularly busy when it happens, but I didn't have task manager up at the time. Often I'm just switching from one window to another when it happens. Typical CPU usage is very low. RAM usage couldn't be more than 6 GB at the most. According to SpeedFan, temperatures are also very low on the CPU, GPU, Motherboard, and hard drives. The fans aren't busy when the crash occurs but I think maybe spin up slightly faster a few seconds after, can't say for sure.

Several of the freezes have had these symptoms: after leaving the computer on for several hours doing nothing, I come back to it and it is responsive for only a few seconds before suddenly stopping. The cursor won't move, the keyboard does nothing, even just pressing Caps Lock or Num Lock doesn't change the state on the keyboard. I'm forced to do a hard reset. But some of them are after a period of continuous use.

One time when it happened the screen became filled with blue-speked white checkerboard squares covering half the screen. That one made me think it seemed hardware or temperature related and that's when I started checking the temps, but they're always fine.

On one occasion the mouse icon changed to a larger, kind of fuzzy/blurry looking one. I was able to see several different large mouse icons suddenly appear, like the scroll icons and the pointing hand one before it finally froze.

Once instead of freezing suddenly, the mouse became very choppy for a few seconds then it froze. Another time, it got choppy but didn't freeze, I could continue using it with difficulty. I started closing all the programs and noticed some warning about Nvidia drivers pop up in the system tray. I think I saw "System Interrupts" or something on the top of the task manager list by CPU usage, but still only like 8%. After I closed everything it seemed to get better but I restarted anyway.

When the couple crashes occured it was with the Nvidia drivers that I installed from the CD. I updated them to the latest version but the freezes continue. Seems like they might be to blame but I really don't know.

So if anyone knows what's going on here or at least can point me in the right direction figuring this out, I'd be very grateful. Thanks.

Hi and :welcome: to Bleeping Computer. According to your system specifications, the motherboard comes with an integrated video chip so might as well switch to that output first in order to test if the problem persist.

Try downloading Speccy and then install the program.  To post and publish a snapshot of your PC.
. In the Menu bar, click File -> Publish Snapshot
. Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard
. On your next reply, right-click on a empty space and click Paste on reply box then click Post.

Download MiniToolBox and run the program. Select
List Last 10 Event Viewers, List Installed Programs and List Users, Partitions and Memory Size then click Go.
A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.

I'm not sure if switching to the integrated video is very feasible since this problem happens at random intervals at least several days apart, maybe a week. I'd rather not use the integrated video for that long. Also the motherboard only has HDMI and Display Port outputs, but my monitor only takes DVI, and I don't have an adapter at the moment.

Here's the info you asked for anyway.

The last crash was early this morning. Those events around 5:52 might be it. The last one before that might have been over a week ago, not sure.

The Speccy information for some hardware readings on temperature and hard drive health status looks fine. There are some updates that needs to addressed such as BIOS and a video card driver install . But we would need to start with these 2 softwares installed that could potentially be part of the freezing issues you're having.

Spybot - Search & Destroy (Version: 2.1.19)
SpywareBlaster 5.0 (Version: 5.0.0

:step1: Please remove Spybot completely from your system as it is not recommended nowadays due to certain bugs on later versions. Install a free antivirus such as Microsoft Security Essentials as currently none in installed.

:step2: Video card >driver link<. Download and use custom - clean install for your Asus GTX card.

:step3: Install the BIOS latest version 1205 link.

:step4: Run your SSD Magic Software and check for firmware updates for the drive.

* Edited for incomplete sentence on first paragraph.

I only use Spybot for the immunizations. The SpywareBlaster program only does immunizations. I figure the passive block lists won't hurt anything. Nonetheless, I've uninstalled them for now.

I updated the video card driver from the link you gave. I also updated the BIOS, which I had never done before and was slightly scary from all the rebooting it did and the various noises it made shutting off repeatedly, but ultimately it seemed to finish correctly. I also updated the SSD firmware which went smoothly.

So I guess I have nothing to do now but wait and see if there's another crash, huh? Thank you for the help thus far.

Spywareblaster is more efficient and has large protection database. But when troubleshooting on the software side, these should be removed especially spybot. Let us know how it went out but don't forget to install the antivirus software. :thumbup2:

After several days of everything going ok, this morning it happened again. I left the computer on overnight, when I came back to it it worked fine for 1 minute, then the mouse became very choppy. An error message popped up in the system tray and I was able to take a screenshot and save it.

Display driver stopped responding and recovered
Display driver NVIDIA Wiondows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 320.08 stopped
responding and has successfully recovered.

I'm a bit skeptical of the "successfully" there. I tried closing some programs after that, but then I got a blue screen with an error saying something like:

:(
Your PC encountered an error and needs restart.
Please wait while windows collects information on the error.
VIDEO_SCHEDULER

I don't remember it exactly, couldn't take a picture at that point. I ran MiniToolBox right afterwards, here's the output:

Also, this might be related, might not be, but I had a problem the other day where I would put the computer in Sleep mode, but then right after it went to sleep it sort of turned back on. The fans and drives started up again, but nothing appeared on the monitor. Pressing the power button caused it to come fully out of sleep and the screen appeared. The motherboard does have this "fan overtime" feature that can keep the fans running for a while, but I had already disabled that, so I'm not sure what happened there.

Just now I got the driver crash again. I started a (java) program and the screen went black for a second. When it came back the error message was in the tray. This time the mouse wasn't choppy. I saved and closed everything and restarted before it got worse. Here's the MiniToolBox output again in case that's helpful:

Also I'm being automatically notified of driver updates from nvidia, should I install them now? Or should I only go through Asus?

I would suggest to stop using sleep mode feature at this point as it's not a robust feature which means it could produce unwanted effects on your system. One of your application faulting error points to LibreOffice software bugs, outdated or compatibility -> See this Link and see if it helps. The latest driver for the Nvidia card is in Beta version. If decided to install, make sure to look for the custom - clean install then check if the problem persist -> GE Force Drivers. Try running also sfc /scannow just in case to check for corrupted system files - System File Checker in Windows 8.

I'm not getting the total freezes anymore, but I am still getting a problem sometimes. Like before it seems to happen after leaving my computer on and unattended for a while. Now instead of a complete freeze, it does this thing where the screen freezes for a second, then goes smoothly for a second, alternately until I restart. I got to run through all these checks and updates and scans again, but I thought I'd note the symptom now, until I can get around to that.

When waking on from sleep or computer usage? Did you try the suggestions/link for particular video driver final version? See also display driver uninstaller just in case.

I hate to use "Refresh Your PC" after being tired of seeing Windows 8 freezing and locking up randomly. It works fine now !!
