Question:
If I use system restore to pick the restore point put on my machine
the last time it was in the shop and everything was updated, would
that allow me to then install the updates I can't update now?

The answer to that...depends on what is the cause of the inability to update, IMO.

Please...post the exact steps you took to update and any onscreen error messages that resulted from that attempt.

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798 and http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_xp-windows_update/cant-install-kb2833941-update/3ad7648b-c181-4b59-a477-262a3897f531 .

I've done all the things previously listed.
Things appear to be working, then Net Framework 1.1 says ...fail

Can you give us some more info?

"then Net Framework 1.1 says ...fail"

What are you trying to do when you get that? What's the exact error message? It can't just be "fail"

What would you like me to run in order to get the message/error message
that you think will show?

Windows automatic update?

MSE update?

I have Automaic updates waiting ...Windows found 5 updates.
Express Install recommended.

Under the Custom Install tab, these are the 5 updates showing:

Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 and NET Framework 2.0 SP2 Updates for Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB982524)

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2804577)

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2833940)

Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP x86 (KB2844285)

So, shall I run Automatic, or choose one of these...

What would you like?
