I am following these instructions per this tutorial and how to Bypass the windows 7 password...

https://roxtreeme.wordpress.com/2012/08/02/how-to-bypass-window-7-password/comment-page-1/#comment-101

I am at 14th step --the stage of searching my registry for the sethc.exe file and I can only type it in and then it opens up...

I can't actually find the location of it to rename it as mentioned in the guide..

Can someone help me to locate the file so I can rename it? and also the cmd.exe file as well as I am sure I will have problems locating that file as well or maybe show me how to rename the file inside of notepad once the file is opened?

I can only save and saveas.  I don't want to saveas and create a new file.. Anyone care to chime in?

Thanks in advance.

Hello -

The first question must be : Why are you trying to "Bypass the windows 7 password" ??

Do you own, or have Admin rights to this computer, or is it ?? borrowed or ...... ??

Thank You -

It's my best friends computer and he forgot his password.

It's his computer .. He can't log on to his Admin account.

Seems rather odd..;that a user would forget a password...needed for daily access to his system.

He never used it I just took out a virus in it about 3  weeks ago using combofix..

It was his moms computer and she never used it because it had a virus..

He then changed the password and forgot it like a mongoloid because he hasn't used it since I took the virus out...

We are trying to install a program that he wanted me to get for him..

He can't remember his Admin password.  Is it really that obscure?  He doesn't use it often.

Anyone please?

I wanted to try something else instead of doing it this way --

I have some boot cds I wanted to try that supposedly have options to retrieve the admin password but his model laptop does not have an optical drive.

@hamluis I am really not lying here!  It is the truth he didn't use his laptop on a daily basis.

Does anyone please have any information for me?  I heard something about ERD password recovery tool but I am not sure how it works or if its a bootable cd ?

Please anyone care to assist me?

I did not say that you were lying...just expressing my reaction if someone appeared at my doorstep with what you have expressed thus far.

IMO...the simple thing to do is to contact the manufacturer and find out what alternatives are available...OEM systems are the only ones which implement passwords which cannot easily be bypassed or reset.  Some OEMs even include techniques for doing so...in the respective repair manuals for systems they have manufactured/sold.

Well we realized that he didn't really have anything important on the computer I actually just remembered I didn't use combofix to restore it to a good state.  I tried to use combofix but it wouldn't work correctly for some reason or another..

I was under the impression combofix was better than malwarebytes so I never used malwarebytes after the fact either..

I had just restored the computer from factory settings using the recovery partition and since he hasn't used it since --well, we'll just go about doing the same thing this time aorund!

So I am restoring it from the recovery partition.  It didn't occur to me...

if anyone still has any idea on how to rename that sethc.exe file or know its directory --I'd still like to know.  I"m sure that can come in handy later down the line and I'd like to just give it a go to see if I could do it.  Thanks for your help guys!

Since you have used ComboFix (it is nothing like Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware program) and it is a specialist tool only.

You may have caused other problems when the program "failed".

Please read the Preparation Guide from Step #6 and post a new topic, with the requested logs, in Virus / Malware Removal Logs Area for the Experts to help -

If Help Bot replys to your post, please follow the given steps and it will be reported to the correct people.

This is not the area to solve problems that may have been caused by ComboFix tool.

If you are not able to generate any requested logs, please repost and fully describe your current computer problems there.

Thank You -

Please list the full Make and Model of the computer (if known).

Some computers have "restore", inbuilt tools or similar back-up installed -
