Cannot configure access point, connected but no internet access

Make and model of computer: Fujitsu Lifebook NH751

How the computer is connected (wireless or wired): both. No problems when hooking modem directly to computer, no problems when tethering to cell phone. With wireless access point, it is connected but no internet access.

Make and model of Router: Cisco DPC3008 cable modem, Colubris CN1050 access point.

Approximate Distance From the router the PC is if its a wireless connection: 6 inches at times, 3 feet at other times.

What type of internet you have (Dsl, Cable, T-1,etc..): cable

We had DSL through the local phone company until they double-billed us 6 months in a row, even after repeated phone calls. Then we tethered to our phones for a little over a year. Yesterday, the local cable company installed new internet for us. They provided the modem, which works just fine when hooked directly to the computer. I hooked up the Colubris access point that we used when we had DSL (which, until yesterday, was still hooked up to the old modem just as it was when we had DSL, because the plugs were all behind my piano that I didn't want to move), but it states connected but no internet access. Thinking that my new-ish computer (never used on old DSL setup) may have something affecting it, I used another computer that was used on the old DSL setup with this access point. Same story, connected but no internet access.

Pulling out the manual for the access point, I see the following things indicated by the lights on front:
-The CN1050 is fully operational.
-Internet port is not connected to a cable or xDSL modem or the modem is off.
-Internet port is receiving data.
-LAN port is not connected to a network, or the device it is connected to is off.
-Wireless port is fully operational.
-Wireless port is receiving data.

The problem appears to lie in the "Internet port is not connected to a cable or xDSL modem or the modem is off" category. I attempted to access the web-based management tool by pointing Firefox to the IP address for the acccess point (connected to the access point with no internet access, but also tethered to my cell so that I had internet access). The first time, it went to the site and I typed my login info. It then took a while, and came up as "connection has timed out." Every time since then, it states "unable to connect" or "connection has timed out." I can connect to other websites, so it is not the internet connection.

Tried it in IE, same result. Tried it in Chrome, Chrome crashed (go figure).

I have tried the following solutions with no success. These are not necessarily listed in the order performed, and I may have forgotten some of the things I have tried in the 6+ hours I have worked on this last night and today.
-Unplugged the modem and access point, restarted the computer.
-Used new cable to connect modem and access point.
-Connected the access point directly to my computer, although I didn't think this would work in the first place.
-Made sure that all connection settings were set to "automatically detect settings."
-(Windows 7) Change adapter settings, Local Area Connections, Properties, Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), Properties, then set the IP address to match the one for the access point and the subnet IP automatically completed to 255.255.255.0 (changed this all back to automatically detect when it did not solve the problem).
-Run CMD as administrator, ipconfig/all
-CMD: netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
-CMD: netsh winsock reset catalog
-CMD: netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
-CMD: netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
-CMD: ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew
-CMD: ping, followed by IP of access point (timed out).

I still think it could all be solved if I could just get in to configure the access point. Someone please tell me what to do before I lose my mind. Thanks!

With a PC connected just to the modem with a ethernet cable

can we see an ipconfig /all - I suspect the modem may also be a router - and you are trying to connect two routers together

you should also do a powercycle - when changing connections to a cable modem - see below

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.

Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply

Note: you will see entries named Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface: we dont need to see that information - JUST the infomation above those entries

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

This should work for all windows version, XP, Vista, W7

Hold the Windows key and press R

For Windows 8

to open a Cmd Prompt or an Administrator Cmd prompt from the Desktop. Use Win + X and choose Command Prompt or Command Prompt (Admin) from the list.

then type CMD

then press Enter to open a command prompt box

(A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here

to do that:

From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all

all the text will now be highlighted

Now go back to the forum - goto the reply and then right click in the reply box and paste the results.

The results from the notepad should now appear in the forum reply.

How to power cycle

“power cycle” process to reboot or reset the modem/router

Switch off all the devices modem, router and computers also unplug their power cables.

Wait at least 1 to 5 minutes,

Plug the power cords back in, but don’t switch them on.

First turn on the modem and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.

Next switch on the router (if a separate device) and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.

Now turn on your computer, You should now be able to access the Internet.

I apologize for not posting this last night, which would have been before the previous two posts. I literally just fell into bed after staying up half the night to get it to the point I am about to describe. I have done most if not all (I'll reread in a second) of what Etaf instructed.

Reset access point to factory defaults
Unplug modem and access point.
Connect modem and access point.
Plug in modem, wait for all lights to indicate it is up and running.
Plug in access point, wait for all lights to indicate it is up and running.
Meanwhile, restart computer.
Plug access point into computer.
Access IP address for access point, reconfigure, etc. It was a lengthy process because it kept timing out. Everything but DHCP done, because when I released and renewed on its settings, it did nothing - which means it still wasn't playing nicely with the modem.
Reset modem (again). Then went back in and released and renewed DHCP settings again, and voila! It picks everything up.
Before removing the cable that connected the access point and computer, I connected my phone to the wireless to test it, and it worked. It even showed the phone as a wireless client station.

The access point has to be reset after connecting it to the modem. The modem has to be reset after connecting it to the access point. Apparently back-and-forth resetting is the only way to make these two play nicely together.

But still "limited access" on my computer and no internet, so I did the following:
-CMD: netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
-CMD: netsh winsock reset catalog
-CMD: netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log
-CMD: netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log
-CMD: ipconfig/release and ipconfig/renew
-CMD: ping, followed by IP of access point (all failed)

I have restarted (powercycled) modem, access point a few times after all of this, and still no internet connection.

I was reading some more in the administrator's guide this morning, and I suspected that my firewall settings were too high. I adjusted it from high to medium. I was then "Connected" (as apposed to "Limited Access" before), but still no internet access. During all of that, my husband came home and was able to connect his laptop just fine, internet access and all. So I released and renewed the IP again, then went to the Network and Sharing Center and ran the Windows Diagnostic Tool on the connection. For the first time, it came back with something other than it being a router issue! "DCHP is not enabled for 'Wireless Internet Connection.'" And amazingly, Windows Diagnostic Tool fixed that without any further headaches, and suddenly I had internet access! Hallelujah, it is fixed!
