Cannot connect to router

Hello!

I am trying to fix a friend's computer. He is unable to connect to a router that is being used by 4 other computers. All other computers are able to connect to the router except this one computer. When I try to connect to the router, it asks for the password to connect to the router. Once the password is entered in, a message pops up saying, "wireless network connection 3 - windows was unable to find a certificate to log you on the network Netgear." I've searched some solutions on the internet but the most common solution that has worked for others does not work in this instance. The solution that I have tried was unchecking the box that says, "Enable IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network." under Netgear properties--> Authentication tab. I then proceeded to correct the network authentication and data encryption and inputting the network key, but that did not work. After all those steps, the computer is still unalke to connect to the router. All and sny help is appreciated. Also, the comuter is able to connect to the internet via ethernet cable and the internet drivers apparently are up-to-date.

Please post the computer model, OS next time along with the router/modem.

Is it the wifi password key? Is the security encryption (WPA/WPA2) matched with the router and the troubled computer?

By entering the "password to connect to the router", I do mean the wifi password key. I believed I matched the security encryption correctly. I used my own laptop, which is connected to the same router, as a guide to help fix the problem. I noticed that the security encryption constantly changes everytime I enter the advanced setting options for wireless network connections. I change it to WPA-PSK one minute, and then when I enter the settings again, the network authentication is changed to "open" . That was the link that I used, but my attempt at fixing the problem was unsuccessful. I also noticed that in the Network Connections window that there are three items: (1) 1394 Connection, (2) Local Area Connection, (3) Wireless Network Connection 3. Is that last item, Wireless Network Connection 3, supposed to have a 3 at the end?

Try disabling this from your network connections (right-click, disable) and then go to device manager and disable the adapter. Try connecting by wireless again.

I'm not sure by this reverting settings... Usually there is a save button for any changes made.

Unfortunately, disabling the 1394 Connection did not work...

I have but that doesn't work either. I might just do a clean install on this computer to see if that helps. His computer doesn't have any important data or programs so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

Is the security encryption (WPA/WPA2) matched with the router and the troubled computer?

The router security encryption must match of what the adapter can support which would be WPA not WPA2 or WEP.
