Hello

I Would like you to do the following.

i just ran combofix and it ran fine and closed out but it gave me no log.
i accidentally kept wordpad open while it was running so i figured maybe it messed up and thats why theres no log.

so i ran it again after i closed wordpad and it started but then this happened.

"error opening file for writing c:\32788R22fwjfw\pev.3XE"
"click abort to stop the installation"

i clicked abort.

oh forgot to add the computer still seems fine. still no popups!!!

Hello

Ok lets try this, I want you to run combofix in safe mode but it is very important that when combofix reboots the computer for you to direct it back into safe mode so it can finish the scan.

Boot into Safe Mode

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
  • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
  • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
  • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
  • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
  • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
  • Login on your usual account.

after combofix has finished its scan please post the report back here.

hi just got home from the family party and i followed these instructions exactly. for some reason it still did not give me a report and it never rebooted my computer so i restarted it myself putting it back into safe mode and still no report. when i ran it, all it did was do the scan and then close. i even waited a minute after it closed before restarting it in safe mode but again, no report. my computer still appears to be fine though. still no popups!!!

oh i meant to ask you. what free virus program would you recommend i use?

Greetings

These logs are looking very good, we are almost done!!! Just one more scan to go.

:Remove unneeded start-up entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

If you have any problems running Hijackthis see NOTE** below (Host file not read, blank notepad ...)

  • Run HijackThis
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

    • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ECenter] C:\Dell\E-Center\EULALauncher.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IgfxTray] C:\Windows\system32\igfxtray.exe
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "c:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [dscactivate] "C:\Program Files\Dell Support Center\gs_agent\custom\dsca.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [RoxWatchTray] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Roxio Shared\9.0\SharedCOM\RoxWatchTray9.exe"
      O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Windows Mobile-based device management] %windir%\WindowsMobile\wmdSync.exe
      O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WMPNSCFG] C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\WMPNSCFG.exe
O4 - .DEFAULT User Startup: Dell Dock First Run.lnk = C:\Program Files\Dell\DellDock\DellDock.exe (User 'Default user')
      O4 - Startup: Dell Dock.lnk = C:\Program Files\Dell\DellDock\DellDock.exe
  • Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
  • Click on the "Fix Checked" button
  • When completed, close the application.

NOTE**You can research each of those lines >here< and see if you want to keep them or not
just copy the name between the brackets and paste into the search space
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [IntelliPoint]

NOTE**
sometimes we have to run it like this To run HijackThis as an administrator, right-click HijackThis.exe
(located: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HiJackThis\HiJackThis.exe)<--32bit

Greetings

awesome! thanks!!!

i did what you said but the eset online scanner didn't work.

i clicked the run ESET online scanner botton then checked the terms of use box but the start button was very dimly lit i clicked on it anyway and it did nothing. i clicked on it a few more times but still nothing.

i didn't see your "NOTE** you can research all of those lines and see if you want to keep them" until after i checked them and clicked on fix checked.
i didn't know it was going to remove my side dock on my desktop with all my most used programs. is there a way to get that one back?

EDIT: it looks like i can just go to dell.com and reinstall the dock. is that right?

its not absolutely necessary but i did like having that.

and do you know of a good free anti-virus program i can download to prevent this from happening again?

should i keep any of these or is it ok to delete now?

Hello

Restore HijackThis entries
The HijackThis log backup contains all entries that have been deleted...both good and bad entries.
Let's restore the deleted entries, that we need.
  • Run HijackThis.
If using Vista, you must right click (hijackthis.exe) and choose "Run As Administrator".
    • If you are on the "scan & fix stuff" page... Press the Main Menu...button.
  • On the Main Menu, press the "View the list of backups" button.
  • Place a check in the box of the entries below..

    O4 - Startup: Dell Dock.lnk = C:\Program Files\Dell\DellDock\DellDock.exe

  • With entries checked...press the "Restore"...button, then reply Yes at the prompt. +

Make sure you are running IE as admin - http://www.ehow.com/how_5101965_run-internet-explorer-administrator.html

Try resetting IE - go here and scroll down and click on show all and click on the fix-it button - http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Reset-Internet-Explorer-8-settings

If that does not work then try this one

F-Secure Online Scan

You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan.

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

  • Please go HERE to run an online scan from F-Secure
  • Click on Start scanning
  • This will open a new window

    In Interner Explorer
  • It will require an activex control, please install it
  • Click Accept

  • In Firefox
  • It will require an Add-on to be installed, please install it
  • Order to install the Add-on Firefox needs to be restarted, please do so
[*]Click Full System Scan
[*]It will now download the scanner this may take a while please be patient
[*]It will then start scanning wait for the scan to finish
[*]Click Automatic cleaning (recommended)
[*]Wait for it finish the cleaning process
[*]Click show report
[*]This will open up a window with the results of the scan copy and paste those results as a reply to this topic[/list]
