I had run Spybot, C Cleaner and McAfee, which found nothing. I have not downloaded anything recently.

Regardless, the Internet has been really slow and sluggish on my end. Before I go out an buy hardware, or complain to Comcast, I'd like to see how much of it I can clean up by myself.

So to start things off, this is what I'm running:

Windows Vista Home Premium
Service Pack 2
System
Acer Aspire X1700
Processor: Intel® Pentium® Dual CPU E2220 @ 2.40GHz 2.40 GHz
Memory: 4.00GB
System type: 64-bit Operating System

McAfee AntiVirus Plus
Version 11.6
Build 11.6.453

McAfee VirusScan
Version 15.6
Build: 15.6.231

McAfee Personal Firewall
Version 12.6
Build 12.6.186

McAfee SiteAdvisor
Version 3.5
Build 3.5.0.229

McAfee QuickClean and Shredder
Version 11.6
Build 11.6.164

I'll be honest: I'm certain there's a mathematical way of figuring out X number of devices sharing one cable connection, and what kind of equipment is needed to handle the traffic. I just don't know what that is.
That said, I have a roommate, and he has a laptop on the same network as me. We both have a Blackberry, each. And I have a Wii.
I would like to focus on my desktop first.

To answer the question, this connection has been slow for the past six months.

SpeedTest:

I ran a few of these today:

Date IP Address Download Upload Latency Server Distance Share
11/11/2012 3:45 AM GMT 76.23.122.252 14.06 Mb/s 4.12 Mb/s 35 ms Augusta, GA ~ 100 mi Image

11/10/2012 5:02 PM GMT 76.23.122.252 4.69 Mb/s 3.65 Mb/s 136 ms Augusta, GA ~ 100 mi Image
11/10/2012 4:57 PM GMT 76.23.122.252 10.90 Mb/s 3.96 Mb/s 34 ms Augusta, GA ~ 100 mi Image
11/10/2012 4:56 PM GMT 76.23.122.252 15.03 Mb/s 4.09 Mb/s 35 ms Augusta, GA ~ 100 mi Image

Will be working on MiniToolBox, and post the results on the following post.

Please run this program also, as there are a few errors that need a look -

Download Security Check by Screen317 from HERE or HERE, and save it to your Desktop.
* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
Note: If a security program requests permission to access the Internet, allow it to do so.

Thank You -
EDIT - Please also follow this direction -
NVIDIA display driver files from different (incompatible) versions of the driver have been detected.
NVIDIA OpenGL acceleration is disabled in order to maintain system stability.

To resolve this problem, update the NVIDIA display driver. The latest driver is available at http://www.nvidia.com.

Hi -
Sorry - I posted a reply but my Internet dropped out on me - :o As I lost it in my editor also, I think it was like this -

Please follow these directions - Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on Windows Vista

There seems to be a problem with McAfee, including not showing up in installed programs where it should be - Please check it is working -
There also seems to be a few other programs missing, even Spybot - Search & Destroy has not shown up ??

I hope this shows up http://www.speedtest.net/result/2299961774.png as I just did a Speed Test on my system and consider it "average only" -

Please tell me in each post if the problem improves or other changes -

Thanks -

Thank You -

NetBIOS over TCP/IP has now been enabled.

I checked McAfee, both the Virus Check and the Security Scan Check, as well as the Task Manager. McAfee seems to be running.

Spybot isn't.

Ah right, here are the .png results that I got with speedtest:

http://speedtest.net/result/2299918946.png

http://speedtest.net/result/2299024072.png
http://speedtest.net/result/2299021834.png

Thanks for all of the help, by the way!

Things seem to be running fine. Should I do HijackThis? Or has that been covered by something that we've done earlier?

Should I do HijackThis? << We are not permitted to run those tools here as they are just for Malware Removal Experts to diagnose -

Those tests were very odd, with the middle test dropping right out ??
Would this be the other linked user >> RANDY-PC-PC??

Is this computer linked to the University of California and their servers (or similar) ?? This will be why McAfee is linked to you, and not showing -
Java 7 Update 9 << This is correct, please delete all earlier versions you find (Programs and Features), or did you add it ?? No Java™ showing ?
Also it is not listed in Installed programs - - - -

Would you prefer to go from here, to post a new topic in the Am I Infected section of the forum ?? That will area cover mainly minor infections and problems -
If you do, please 1 / Tell me, 2 / Link to Post#1of this topic when you post and 3 / Describe your problem similar to Post #1 but concentrate more on the actual problem.

There is only a little more that I can do in this area of the forum -

Thank You -

That middle test is what I'm referring to. Sometimes my Internet connection is fine, and sometimes it's sluggish.

Randy is my roommate, so it would make sense that his laptop is referred to as "RANDY-PC-PC"

The only possible network connection to University of California is through BOINC, which can be found here

Working on cleaning up Java. I'll reply to the other questions in the following post.

If there are other problems that need to be address that you think need to be resolved first, I'd like to do that. I can go to the Am I infected? forum after we're completely done here.

You have been a great help, by the way!

only possible network connection to University of California is through BOINC << That is where I drew the idea from first, plus they use McAfee

First -
http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9668866 << Run this M/soft Fixit Program
Click Run and follow any onscreen directions - This will also reset your Hosts File for you -

Next -
Please download RenewMyDNS by DragonMaster Jay in zip file. http://hmoslabs.webs.com/RenewMyDNS.zip
•Save it to your Desktop.
•Right-click on the file and select Extract All...
•Choose a location to save extracted files and keep pressing Next until Finished.
•Double-click RenewMyDNS folder, then double-click RenewMyDNS.bat to start the program.
•Follow the prompts, and when finished it will launch a log.
•Post that log in your next reply.
After posting the log, delete the folder RenewMyDNS - This is a Run Once Only program

After those programs -
Please re-run MiniToolBox, Save it to your desktop and run it.
Checkmark the following boxes:
•Flush DNS
•Report IE Proxy Settings
•Reset IE Proxy Settings
•Report FF Proxy Settings
•Reset FF Proxy Settings
•List content of Hosts
•List IP configuration
•List last 10 Event Viewer log
•List Installed Programs
List devices (Problem only)

Click Go and copy / paste the result (Result.txt).
Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Finally -
You could post a snapshot with Speccy as this may give us a bit more to look at -
Publish a Snapshot using Speccy <<Follow These Directions
