Hi, I'm not the most tech savvy user, so apologies in advance.

When I run CCleaner to clear old files, it tells me that there are 140 files in Internet Explorer to be cleared.

I find this strange, because I use Firefox, not Internet Explorer.

When I open the folder (Windows > Temporary Internet Files > Content IE.5) containing the 140 files, I get a whole heap of zip files with names like '1210015908-m[1].zip'

If I open the zip file, it says it's a 'List File'. I can open it with notepad, and it contains a bunch of random websites that I haven't been to.

I noticed this last month and instructed CCleaner to delete the files. It did, but I just scanned again and the weird zip files seem to be back.

Is this a virus? I use Kaspersky, but it hasn't flagged anything.

Hello, Welcome to BleepingComputer.
I'm nasdaq and will be helping you.

If you can please print this topic it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps.
===

Let see what we can find.

Please download and run this DDS Scanning Tool. Nothing will be deleted. It will just give me some additional information about your system.

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run.

Please just paste the contents of the DDS.txt log in your next post. DO NOT attach the log.
===

Please download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your Desktop.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Search.
  • A log file will automatically open after the scan has finished.
  • Please post the content of that log file with your next answer.
  • You can find the log file at C:\AdwCleaner[Rn].txt (n is a number).
===

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Remove the AdWare, PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) installed on your computer.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on AdwCleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Delete.
  • Everything that was found will be deleted.
  • Follow the prompts to reboot the computer. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the content of that log file with your next answer.
  • You can find the log file at C:\AdwCleaner[Sn].txt (n is a number)..

Secure your system by updating 3rd party programs.

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.

Check your present version and update as recommended.
https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

If present remove the old version(s) of Java using the Add/Remove Programs applet.

Java 6 Update 20

===

Get the latest version of the Adobe Reader.
http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Before your download I suggest you unckeck the box on the top right "Yes, install McAfee Security Scan Plus - optional" this is not required if you are not a McAfee subscriber. While the installation is in progress you can also deny the installation of any other programs that may be suggested.

When installed remove your old version of the Reader using the Add/Remove Programs applet if present.

Please post the AdwCleaner log and let me know if the problem persists.

Thanks for all your help so far.

When I try and run Adwcleaner delete, Kaspersky system watcher pops up and says it's detected 'PDM:Trojan.Win32.Startpage.a' with the adwcleaner process.

Should I ignore this and allow Adwcleaner to run anyway?

Scratch that, ignored Kaspersky and ran Adwcleaner:

Just ran CCleaner again. No zip files, but it now shows Content.ie5 containing 27 random .png files and something called TSleepinfo_EXE[1].

The png images are all replicates of a picture from a newspaper article I read using Firefox, not sure why they've appeared repeated in Content.ie5!

TSleepinfo_EXE[1] is probably this files tsleepinfo-exe that you downloaded twice. Nothing to worry about.

Everything pages you download or read on the internet goes to the Temporary folder.

If you do not want to keep anything the temporary folders can be emptied when you close Internet Explorer.

Open IE
Under Tools, Internet Options, Advance tab.
Under Security
Place at "Check mark at: Empty Temporary internet file folders when browser is closed."
