Hi all, great place here that I've used many times to solve problems (without having to post my own), a terrific resource.

I'm hoping I can get some specialized knowledge here as I can't seem to find many matches for my problem.

Problem: My wireless connection drops, seemingly at random, but it's never indicated that I've lost connection or internet access. However, things that are loading (videos, even a website) will stop in the middle and not recover. If I try to load a new website, the status bar in IE9 or Firefox will say "waiting for a response from [whatever site I'm trying to access]" ...that's the most consistent part of this, "waiting for a response"

On my Compaq Presario CQ56, I hit the little wireless internet button off, wait a few seconds, hit it again and I'm back in business for an indeterminate amount of time.

I had never had this problem before. Now, I had just moved to a new place (and I'm not even sure where the router is quite yet, to be perfectly honest). No one else seems to have any internet issues at all, on no other connections (away from here) do I have any problems at all (stayed in a hotel recently, back at my old place of residence, etc.). Just here.

My info:
Compaq Presario CQ56 laptop - Windows 7 (64 bit)
2.2 GHZ, 2 GB RAM

Device Manager -> Network Adapters
- Hamachi Network Interface
- Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter***
- Ralink RT5390 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter
- Realtek PCIe FE Family Controller

*** - Code 10 This device cannot be started (being that it's virtual, I'm not sure what it's purpose is really...)

Things I've tried:
- Simply restarting the computer (simplest answers are sometimes the best)...didn't help.
- Going into the power management of the adapter and not allowing Windows to turn it off to conserve power...didn't help.
- Going into the advanced screen of the adapter and enabling "multimedia/gaming environement"...didn't help.
- Uninstalling all of the drivers from all of the devices listed above, restarting the computer, allowing Windows to re-install them fresh...did help, for several hours, but then I got bogged down again. ***

*** - Interesting that it worked for several hours (longest stretch of continuous internet I've had here), and that sometimes I would get stuck on the "waiting for a response from..." status, but after 5 or 10 seconds, a refresh of the page could bring it up. So it pulled itself out of it so to speak...that's not the case any longer.

Malware/virus free to the best of my knowledge.

Anything I can do to test what's causing this, fix it on my end without getting the router involved? It's Verizon Fios, by the way, if that makes a difference (it was Verizon Fios at my previous residence as well, and the one before that, no problems at all [best service I've had, in fact.]. Any help or tests would be greatly appreciated, especially because I need my laptop for work, fun and as a part-time television.

Thanks so much!

ISP issued. I'll try to find this thing if it's of critical importance and report back...

If there's anything you (or anyone) can think to tinker with in the mean time, I'm all ears...

While connected on wireless :
Download MiniToolBox and select all options.
A notepad will open then copy-paste the report on your next reply.

My advice would be to either:

A. Have your ISP swap your current modem/router combo for a replacement

or

B. Exchange your modem/router combo for a basic cable modem and then buy your own Linksys or Netgear wireless router.

It honestly sounds like your router is failing so the best course of actions is one of the suggestions above.

To verify this connect another device via the wireless connection and see if when the computer looses connection if the other device also looses connection. If both loose it then you know 100% its the router.

Remove Hamachi network connections and check the difference.

You know what I did and didn't even think of it before and it seems to be working so far (knock on wood) was going to the Device Manager and disabling the Microsoft Virtual Mini Adapter whatever it is. My internet seems faster (maybe a biased result of not having to reset my connection every 15 minutes though) and hasn't cut out. So far, so good. I've only been online this evening til now, but was able to watch a streaming sporting event without issue. Hopefully that fixes that and that I didn't jinx it.

Thanks for the time and the ideas everyone...if it should give out again, I'll go after the router/modem...

I'm just going to follow-up again, in case this changes anything.

The problem still occurs, leaving me with a "waiting for a response from [website.com]" in the status bar from time to time. There's almost a 1:1 correlation between the "dropping" of the connection and watching a live stream of video for a little while (normally at least 30 minutes). It's almost as if I'm being "capped" here...because it seems that once it starts happening, it keeps happening.

Example today...

10am - 12pm (minus about 20 minutes in there somewhere) I watched a live stream of ESPN for Sunday NFL Countdown, almost no hiccups at all. And for the record, I'm not watching HD streams or anything...I just want to be able to see what's going on, I prefer non-high quality streams so it has less chance of cutting out.

12pm - 12:30pm - Watched a KHL hockey game, no problem.

1pm - 5 pm - Colts/Packers game, pretty good throughout. Had to reset the network adapter once. Started getting chippy around the end. Where it would "hold" the action and then kind of skip through the next handful of seconds and re-join live action.

waited a little bit and then started with the Broncos/Patriots game and I'm having lots of trouble...multiple links, different streams, restarted the computer. Can't get anything going. I can't even really use my internet much at all except in short spurts right after a network adapter reset.

There's at most one other person using the same internet as me right now, so it's certainly not a matter of traffic locally. I'm not sure how much Verizon Fios can get bogged down during high traffic usage in the area (I do note that on weekday evenings it can get kind of slow, which I'm ok with)...

I'm trying to go into detail in case it sparks an idea with someone...but no one else in the house as a TV and at least a couple of people use their computers to watch streams and archived episodes one way or another but report no issues (besides some sluggishness on weekday evenings after dinner).

Disabling the Microsoft Virtual Miniport or whatever helped. I disabled Hamachi and noticed no change at all. There must be something holding me up somewhere. Again, I'm never losing connection to the internet (according to the bars down there) but just get caught on "waiting for a response from..." for an indeterminate amount of time at indeterminable intervals...

You should run a speedtest when good connections are holding and when it is not. Check your router/modem if all lights are present and flickering for any internet activity. I am having a little problem also with my internet suddenly cutting out on wireless, main issue I would know is my ISP. I am not familiar or have used Hamachi, but if there is any program or software that is found on your add or remove utility, you can removed it safely to make sure its not present anymore. Make sure you clear your cache or temp. files also.

Another thing that you need to do is......

Remove Norton internet security.
Run the Norton Removal tool
http://www.softpedia.com/dyn-postdownload.php?p=26173&t=4&i=1

Hit the start button type device manager open device manager scroll down to network adapters right click uninstall your wireless driver do not tick the box that says remove this device only uninstall it then reboot.

After the reboot check the connection.

Re-install Norton.

Ok, what a great reply, thank you. I did the steps as best as I could...I was only limited by two errors this "ordinal 1108...dyanmic link library...wsock32.dll" error and as you'll see from MiniToolBox, a wshelper.dll error (which caused one of those DOS commands to fail)

Here's MiniToolBox:

And I'd like to post the Adware Cleaner log, but it says don't copy and paste it and I don't see where to "attach" on this message board, so I'll wait on that.

So, I'm going to go about my normal internet habits now and test it out and report back what happens. Thanks so much!
