Hello -- I have a red X on my wireless icon, yet, I am connected to the internet. While annoying, I can deal with it. The real issue is that I cannot get this computer to join my home network so that my other computer can access it. To that end, my wireless router does not appear in the Network and Sharing Center and I have a feel the two issues are related.

I'd greatly appreciate any help on this... Thank you!

Some facts:
-->My other computer, which is the same exact computer, DOES show the wireless router in Network and Sharing Center
-->If you search this problem on google you'll find one hundred threads on this same topic -- each with a different solution to the problem (frustrating!)
-->My computer: Lenovo IdeaPad V460 (both computers, in fact)
-->Connection: Wireless
-->Router: DLink DIR-615
-->Approximate Distance From the router: 8 feet
-->Type of Internet: Cable (RCN)

Reinstall your wireless driver

Press Windows+R key and type

devmgmt.msc and click ok

Expand network adapters-right click on your wireless adapter-uninstall it and restart the PC

It should install on bootup,if that doesnt work

Hello -- Thanks for helping me. Unfortunately, uninstalling and then reinstalling the driver did not get rid of the red X on my wireless icon.

I ran the FSS scan and here is the report:

Sorry, I forgot to mention I did this and it said it was already started. So I restarted it and nothing really happened.

Here's a screen grab:

when did this issue start? Do you have previous restore points before it worked?

It's been going on for a few months. Sort of now just getting around to looking into it. I don't think I've ever established any restore points, unless my computer automatically does this occasionally (sort of like a Microsoft Word doc with autosave?).

I saw this potential solution but haven't tried it yet (it involves deleting a bunch of stuff):

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-networking/red-x-on-system-tray-connection-icon-even-though-i/5a352660-2808-40d9-b363-97865193e50b

I found this to work:

1. Open the Registry Editor
2. If you use Windows 7 browse to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\TrayNotify
3. Delete the data of the following keys in this folder:
IconStreams
LastAdvertisement
PastIconsStream
PromotedIconCache
UserStartTime
4. Open the Task Manager.
Switch to the process tab.
Kill every explorer.exe process
(this is necessary because the explorer.exe has a backup copy of this keys in the RAM and writes it back to the registry on shutdown)
Switch to the application tab of the Task Manager.
Press "New Task".
Type "explorer.exe" and press [Enter].
