I recently got infected with what I presume is a rootkit virus. My google searches are continually redirected, and I experience popups while browsing. Additionally, every few minutes, an Adobe program pops up on my desktop and requests installation.

The virus seems to have deactivated my windows security system as well.

I have thus far activated and updated malwarebytes anti-malware software and did a full system scan. While it detected viruses and infection it has ultimately been unable to remove them from my system, no matter how many times I scan and purge. That is the only cleansing method I’ve tried.

I did not download/run the gmer log because The Guide specifies it is for 32 bit systems and mine is of the 64 bit variety.

This is my DDS log. Thank you in advance, this virus has me batty.

My Microsoft security essentials window will not permit me to access its settings in order to disable its antispyware software. I assumed this was because whatever virus I contracted already disabled the security system. However, when I ran combofix it notified me that Microsoft security essentials was active and running, but there is no way for me to disable the software as specified within the guide attached to your post, as the only method listed [through the settings tab on the security window] is essentially inaccessible to me

do you still have Norton installed as well or is the log just showing remnants?

AV: Microsoft Security Essentials *Enabled/Updated* {108DAC43-C256-20B7-BB05-914135DA5160}
AV: Norton Internet Security *Disabled/Outdated* {63DF5164-9100-186D-2187-8DC619EFD8BF}

Is MSE operating properly now?

we just have a couple more scans to do to make sure we get all the left overs

please do the following:

  • Please open your MalwareBytes AntiMalware Program
  • Click the Update Tab and search for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected. <-- very important
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.

Extra Note:If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Go here to run an online scanner from ESET.
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activeX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked and the Scan Archives option is ticked.
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • When the scan completes, press the LIST OF THREATS FOUND button
  • Press EXPORT TO TEXT FILE , name the file ESETSCAN and save it to your desktop
  • Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • Press the BACK button.
  • Press Finish

I am performing the malwarebytes scan now and will proceed with the ESET scan once that is completed, but I just wanted to answer those questions you posed at the beginning of your reply.

Norton is no longer installed on my computer; the log seems to be showing remnants of Norton. My subscription to the program ended a while ago.

No, MSE is not working properly. When I select the icon on my task bar to open the program window, the MSE window tells me to restart the program service and denies me access to any other tabs in the window. When I select the option “start now” to restart MSE, it tells me that it “Couldn’t start the security essentials service” because “the specified service does not exist as an installed service”

ok, you will need to completely remove MSE then re-install it, that should fix it, you're Windows Updates may not be working either as that seems to go hand in hand when MSE is corrupted.

so after you complete the ESET scan, check the windows updates and if they are not working, run the following and post the log along with the MBAM and ESET logs

Please download Farbar Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

I did as you instructed and constructed the icon. When I click the icon to run the program, it tells me that there is a registry error and that it cannot access the registry.
