Hi -
For a start:

Please download Rogue Killer
Right click on it and select run as administrator
Now,click on HOSTS FIX option on right side
A log should get generated after the fix, please post the log back here

Next:

1.Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
At some stage you will be asked to disable your Antivirus program so it will not conflict with ESET Scanner. This is normal, just disable it, not remove it.
2.Double click on the icon on your desktop.
4.Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
5.Click the Start button.
6.Accept any security warnings from your browser.
7.Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
8.Click Advanced settings and select the following:
•Scan potentially unwanted applications
•Scan for potentially unsafe applications
•Enable Anti-Stealth technology
9.ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this takes some time.
10.When the scan completes, click List Threats
11.Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
12.Click the Back button.
13.Click the Finish button.

If you have any problems downloading these programs please use these directions first as your internet may not be able to download -

Click Start > Run and type or copy / paste this into the Run box one at a time >

ipconfig /release Click OK or Enter -
ipconfic / renew Click OK or Enter

To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
1.Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
2.In the list of services, click DNS Client.
3.Make sure that the Status column displays Started and that the Startup Type column displays Automatic.
4.If the service is not set to Started or if the startup type for the DNS Client service is not set to Automatic, follow these steps:
a.Right-click DNS Client, and then click Properties.

okay, the Rogue Killer...I've downloaded it a couple of times and run it more than that. It says the Host File is repaired, but there is no report: Cannot find the \RKreport[1].txt file. Do you want to create a new file? Yes No Cancel

Sorry, I got on an extended call and am just now trying these things and this is the first thing. Should I continue?

Very odd that no result was posted ?
But ... That is very good as it was one of the bigger problems. You can delete that program now if it did not remove itself - Then Reboot
What stage are you on now ?? Note that if you do the ESET online scan it will take about 1 hour by the time it loads and scans.

If you are free you can post me a fresh MiniToolBox at any stage With these checked -
•Flush DNS
•Reset IE Proxy Settings
•List content of Hosts
•List IP configuration
•List last 10 Event Viewer log
•List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Also another small program - Please download Farbar Service Scanner and Save to Desktop.

Thank you for bearing with me. Well, all of my desktop icons are gone today.

And last night after I closed my browser, I looked at the icons and noticed one that appears to be the Rogue Killer results. However I had ran it so many times trying to get a report, and not realizing one had already been saved to my desktop, that I don't know if this is the first one or not. Sorry.

I also posted results below for the Mini Toolbox and the Farbar Service Scanner, both which I just did run.

But I'm not sure what you are asking about me checking Windows Updates. Where would I check it? I thought it updated automatically.

I will download Eset now and try the scan again and post back. Any certain reason you know of why it would take a lot longer than an hour? I think I mentioned it took almost that to get to 28% complete.

Hi -
A few more items still to fix.
The ESET loading is taking longer as your system is VERY small by most standards today, and a quick fix would be to add a larger RAM stick -
I only use the figures as a basic idea of times, but always forget when dealing with a small computer like yours.

Any other items we loaded can be Deleted (including reports) since you do not have the reserves to store them on the system -

Do you or your daughter run a link to your computer with a Cell Phone or similar device ? It seems someone is with Active Sync and this is causing several "minor" problems -

With this feature enabled, when a new message arrives in a user's mailbox, up-to-date notifications allow synchronization to occur on a user's device.
Enable this feature if you have users who are using mobile devices to synchronize, and you do not want to specify the carrier

We can disable this if you wish to do so -

Next task - From your FSS scan results

Here's how you enable the service:
1. Click Start
2. Click Run
3. Type services.msc
4. Double-click DNS Client in the list

EDIT - With the slow loading of ESET you can Minimise the screen and continue to work without needing to actually watch it -

The Eset scan just finished (a little over 2 hours). I just now read your message, so I didn't realize I could minimize the screen and stay on the computer. Below are the results.

My son has an iPod that he goes online with. And he has Xbox Live. Don't know if that one matters, though. However, none of us have any data plan on our cell phones. I probably shouldn't disable Active Sync.

Okay. I enabled the Dnscache Service. That's probably all I can do for tonight, but I will check back tomorrow. Do you think I should run the Rogue Killer again to see if my icons come back? I wonder what happened to them...

May be your icon problem (I hope) Just click on the Minimise bar ( - ) at the top and try this -
Right click on an open (blank) area of your desktop and you will see a menu there, Hold the mouse on the top item "Arrange Icons By"
You want to have these 2 items ticked - Align to Grid and Show Desktop Icons - This may be the simple fix

Also, empty the Windows temporary folder. Click Start > Run > Type %temp% , and then click OK.
Click Edit, Select All. Click File and then click Delete.

HELLO, Icons!

And hello to you too! Thanks! That was a super easy fix, and I'll know what to do next time they disappear. :thumbup2:

I'm getting a late start and won't be able to do much this time. But in trying to delete the temp files, some of them won't delete, saying "Access is denied."

And the iPod/Xbox thingy...what item is that that's showing up? And what does it mean because it's showing up?

And what about the updates you mentioned previously, am I supposed to be doing something about that? So many questions, I know!
