My father was trying to figure out how to add an extra wireless account to our network - he googled for it, and made the mistake of picking a company that wasn't directly related to our router but the top, which was called iyogi. While attempting to get help retrieving our wireless password while on customer service with the iyogi people, she accessed this PC and manually dissabled a lot of our programs in an atempt to get us to pay for bogus tech support, as well as disabling automatic updates on the virus protection. All of this caused him to fairly quickly figure out that it's not a smart idea to click the most popular entry when you google .

I uninstalled the iyogi product and have re-enabled automatic scanning, but a cdos prompt is still springing up. Should we worry about rootkits and/or hacking attempts? Is the software fully removed? Can these scammers continue to access this PC? Computer is a Compaq Presario PC SR5130NX, Running Windows Vista. GMER Log attached!

Note:
Do not mouse click ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note: If you have difficulty properly disabling your protective programs, refer to this link --> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html
===

Third party programs if not up to date can be the cause infiltration of an infection.

Please run this security check for my review.

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.
===

Note: If after running ComboFix you get this error message "Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion." when attempting to run a program all you need to do is restart the computer to reset the registry.

Please post the logs for my review.

p.s.
When do you get to see the DOS prompt?

Shall run Combofix tomorrow morning - sorry for the delay in getting back to you!

The Dos prompt is so quick that it's impossible to see what it is, sadly, just long enough to notice a window pops up.

Your Combofix log is clean.

===

Get the latest version of the Adobe Reader.
http://get.adobe.com/reader/
Before your download I suggest you unckeck the box on the top right "Include in your download" this is not required. While the installation is in progress you can also deny the installation of any other programs that may be suggested.

When installed remove your old version of the Reader using the Add/Remove Programs applet if present.

Please let me know what problem persists.

Excellent; Combofix took out whatever was causing the prompt window to pop up. It's generally speedier, too!

Updated Adobe Reader!

Glad we could help.

Time for some housekeeping

The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bold text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /Uninstall

Delete the other tools we used.

I've tried to remove it that way, but it tells me the program doesn't exist on the computer.

Try this.

Just rename ComboFix.exe to UNINSTALL.exe and double click it. It's case insensitive.

Sorry about the delay! We've been dealing with heatwave-based power outages. Renamed and deleted!
