Windows reporting wrong partition size

Hi,

I’m having trouble extending the size of my C: partition because, it seems, Windows is reporting two different sizes for the partition. I have a 40GB disk that yields an effective capacity of about 37GB.

Windows Explorer is reporting 30.01GB capacity drive. This is the size I remember last extending the partition to and it’s presently also all I have access to. The main window of Microsoft Management Console (i.e. the Disk Management option in Window's Computer Management tool) also reports the C: drive having a capacity of 30.01GB.

However, just below, the graphical representation of disk allocation in the console reports C: drive as having 37.25GB capacity. The horizontal bar extends to the end and there is no reference to any 'unallocated' space on that disk, implying that the partition at its maximum size. I've attached screen shot.

When I try to use diskpart.exe to extend the partition, it too reports the C: volume as having 37.25GB. When I use the 'extend' command, dispkart tells me "Diskpart failed to extend the volume. Please make sure the volume is valid for extending." I'm guessing this is because it thinks the partition is already at its maximum.

One of these two reported partition sizes must surely be wrong. Either I'm being prevented from extending the partition when space is available or I'm being prevented from fully using a partition that is already fully extended.

Does anybody know why this is happening and how I can fix it? Or am I missing something? A short while ago, I did have a couple of viruses that infected the Master Boot Record of the disk. (The disk is now clean.) Could the inconsistency lie in the MBR?

I usually extend the partition by running both my laptop and diskpart from a second disk and connecting the first via a caddy. I follow the instructions in Microsoft Article ID: 325590. I've used diskpart successfully with these disks several times before.

My operating system is Windows XP Home Edition service pack 3 and Microsoft Management Console v. 3.0 with Disk Management Extension v. 1.00. The partition I want to extend is on a Seagate ST94019A 3.5" disk.

Help would be much appreciated!

The fact is...you don't have sufficient free space on tha Windows partition...for it to function properly.

In general, at least 15% of a given Windows partition should be free space.

You need to move data files (graphics, videos, music) from that partition until you have at least 15% free space...then see how your system is functioning.

Louis, thanks. I've also run Microsoft Management Console from the second disk, which is a 10GB disk with at least 6GB free space, with the same result. I did some quick cleaning anyhow leaving 1.6GB free space but the problem persists.

Speccy doesn't work on my system. Sadly, it crashes when it retrieves hard drive information. For some reason it just doesn't 'agree' with the Seagate disk I'm using. (This issue isn't related to the present problem. It's been there ever since I upgraded my disk over a year ago.)

I tried copying and pasting what information I could from Speccy instead, but can't do it quickly enough. I also unsuccessfully tried running Speccy from the second disk.

Is there another specification tool I could try?

Can you navigate to Device Manager and under Disk Drives there should be the model number of your drive, can you post it?

No problem. It's a Seagate ST94019A (firmware revision 3.09.)

Apologies, in my first post I said the disk was 3.5". It's 2.5".

In the BIOS is there any way to limit the size of the drive or does it show up in the BIOS as 40Gig aka 37.7Gigs?

Thanks. I went into the BIOS on start-up and although it indicates a hard disk is present, it doesn't give a capacity or any way of limiting the capacity of the disk or any partition. That said, it's not often I go into the BIOS so it's possible I've missed something, though I did check every option.

Do you have the ability to download and burn a linux live cd?

I would like for you to download Ubuntu and run it as a live CD, and see what it reports as the full size of your disk, and to see if it can view the entire drive. You are missing roughly 6 to 7Gigs of space.

Okay. Just to confirm, I'll be downloading Linux/Ubuntu from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop . It might take me a while to create the disk.

As it happens, I have a Linux/Ubuntu-based Clonezilla live CD that provides command-line access to the shell if that's any help. The build is a couple of years old.

Download a more recent version of Ubuntu and run the live version from the CD.
