Baffling XP freeze-ups

Hello. I just bought a used Thinkpad T60 from a well-rated seller on Ebay, and in the week since I got it it's totally frozen up on me multiple times. The screen totally freezes, CTRL ALT DELETE doesn't do anything, hitting the power button doesn't do anything, I have to unplug the computer to restart it. (The old battery the laptop came with is dead, so it loses power the second it's unplugged.) There have also been various incidents where the cursor seems to freeze for 5-10 seconds or so, but then gets over it.

It's happened at random times, when I'm online, when I'm offline editing videos, once even during shutdown. I keep looking at the event viewer after these incidents, and there's nothing listed that seems like the obvious culprit. There will be errors and warnings for Windows Search Service, but they don't seem to be happening during the periods when the computer locks up.

The Ebay seller insists he had no problems with it, and like I said he has very positive ratings. I'm guessing I screwed up the registry somehow trying to get rid of some of the programs that were pre-installed on this machine. I don't need Itunes and Realmedia and other things that eat a lot of memory, but uninstalling them may have screwed me up. In at least one case I uninstalled something and when I rebooted the computer it had obvious caused a problem, I was getting pop-ups about dlls and stuff like that. I did a system restore and fixed that problem, but the machine is obviously still having bugs.

I've tried multiple system restores, but I don't think I have any restore points to a time before this problem started. I've run Ccleaner, I've run Avast, Malwarebytes, Security Essentials, I downloaded and ran various programs to examine the registry, to look at the computer's heat, to test the RAM. Everything comes back normal, I get rid of viruses, the hardware seems fine, etc... And then my computer freezes up again. This machine has two gigs of memory, but apparently about half of it is already taken up with these programs I don't need or want, but can't seem to get rid of without causing more problems!

I do not have much money to spend and I'm really hoping I can salvage this thing. (And no, the seller won't accept returns. I took his good seller rating as a sign he wouldn't knowingly sell a lemon.)

I'm running XP professional, Service Pack 3, on a 32-bit system. I am not super tech-savvy, but I can usually solve my own problems... And this time I'm just stumped.

In the battery bay, make sure there is no gunk or residual stains from the old, now dead, battery -

The next item to quickly replace is usually the CMOS battery, a small watch type battery that may be shown in the EDIT below.

Hi again -
A quick extra to your purchase date of this unit. Was it around 4/4/2012 (about 3 weeks ago) or more recent than that ??

Just going through the Windows updates, there are lots around 4/4/2012, about (155), a few on 5th and 6th and more on April 10th -
I was wondering if you, or the seller, did these Windows and Lenovo updates as they are all similar dates ??

I also get this Installation Date - Making it seem like a re-install or fresh install ??

I've only had the computer for a week or so, and the seller said he'd freshly re-installed XP. I don't think I've done any Windows updates, but I'm not sure. I've done a lot of downloading, scanning and system restoring in the last week, and it's all kind of becoming a blur!

Can you remember yet what the item you deleted may have been in your first sentance ??

Please check System Restore for operating - - - Start > Programs > Accessories > System tools > System Restore -

Now look at the Left side (System Restore Settings) > Click on it > Make sure there is NO tick in the Upper Left Box, and the Slider is Fully Right -
The Bottom area (Status) should say C: Monitoring (or similar) - Click OK to Exit the window -

Create a Restore Point > Highlight the Middle "Circle", and click Next > Type "New Point" and click Create > Click Home when done
Click Restore my computer to an earlier time > Click Next > Look at How many Dark Dates there are (apart from today) do not use them yet
MSE your Antivirus, should create one every update, mine is set to Update and Scan every day (ask for help if you want this changed)

As a follow up to any information above, this should also be performed -

Start > Run Box > Type chkdsk /r > Click OK, or press Enter - The computer will go to a Safe Mode look and perform this check / repair command
Note the space after K - At the end of the check your computer will Reboot, this is normal, so please wait till this happens -

Note that this should take ~ about 1 hour, or so, to complete all 5 stages - Do not stop or unplug the computer while this is running -

I'm pretty sure I ran the chkdsk before, but I'll run it again (and look at my system restores) later when I'm back home and can use my laptop again.

I did the System Restore steps described above, and the earliest date is April 17th, which I believe was a day or so after I got the computer. I'm a little reluctant to replace the battery before I know if this laptop is a lemon... Frankly I already spent more than I could afford on it, and I don't wanna throw any more cash at it if I can help it.

I haven't run chkdsk yet today, but as I said I'm almost certain I ran it a few days ago and everything looked OK.

I'm not sure which deleted item caused the dll pop-ups... It may have been Itunes, or something called Bonjour... Or maybe it was Windows Search Service. There are a lot of programs I'd like to remove for good!

I believe I now have some clues as to what's happening here... A few minutes ago my laptop froze up again, and when I rebooted it I looked at the SYSTEM in the event viewer and saw two errors, both right around the time the computer crashed. The first said that it was EVENT ID 7026, and had this message: "The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: IBMTPCHK" Then over the next couple of seconds there were 12 "information" messages (not errors) culminating with a message that Windows Search Service had entered a stopped state. That was followed by the second error, event ID 7024, saying: "The Windows Search service terminated with service-specific error 2147749155 (0x80040D23)." Bouth errors (and all of the "info" messages) listed their source as Service Control Manager.

I don't know what I'm looking at here, but it sure looks significant. Is Windows Search Service the culprit?

For hamluis - First questions and brief answers -

Just going through the Windows updates, there are lots around 4/4/2012, about (155), a few on 5th and 6th and more on April 10th -
I was wondering if you, or the seller, did these Windows and Lenovo updates as they are all similar dates ??
I also get this Installation Date - Making it seem like a re-install or fresh install ??

The next item to quickly replace is usually the CMOS battery, a small watch type battery

I've only had the computer for a week or so, and the seller said he'd freshly re-installed XP.
The old battery the laptop came with is dead, so it loses power the second it's unplugged
the seller won't accept returns. I took his good seller rating as a sign he wouldn't knowingly sell a lemon (Dealer)

A few "minor" notes -
If you do want this laptop to work at all, you do need to spend a couple of $$'s on it as you have "seller won't accept returns" policy -

Now give them a very bad rating also, as they sold a lemon (maybe fixable, but still a lemon).
"The Ebay seller insists he had no problems with it" Ha Ha. Why reinstall ?? It was most likely a cheap pick-up, and turn over sale -

A bit easier to fix for a very experienced person, but very hard for a non experienced person. Glad it is not mine ! !

First - Download and run M/soft Fix It http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9668866
Click the Fix it link, click Run in the File Download dialog box, and then follow the steps in the Fix it wizard.
Note If you are not on the computer that has the problem, you can save the automatic fix to a flash drive or to a CD and then run the automatic fix on the computer that has the problem.
Reboot when done, even if not asked -

Go to > Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Click Disk Cleanup > Tick, Downloaded Program Files, Tempory Internet Files, Offline Webpages, Recycle Bin, Tempory Files, WebClient/Publisher Temp Files, Compress Old Files > Click OK and Yes.
The program will disappear when finished -
Go back to System Tools > Disk Defragmenter > Click Defragment - It will pop a report at the finish, but just close out of it -
Reboot again (you will not be asked) just to clear all -

Please read this topic posted by Artrooks, on how to create a Recovery CD, but select your version of XP (if not XP Pro)

You will need to replace the small Back up battery in the screen shot I posted at Post #2 or this is going to get worse -
Re-read the link at Post #2 on your product and see how to open the back as it will most likely need cleaning / dusting inside -
Read all the Diagnose & Fix section and the Guides & Manuals section -

A totally dead / useless main battery is no good, so try to find a replacement unit as we do not know if the charger even works fully (more cost)

You have not removed Bonjour / Itunes or the programs linked to it -

To disable Bonjour > Click Start > Run, then type in MSCONFIG, then click OK > "Services" tab
Untick Bonjour Service > Make sure DCOM Server Process Launcher and DHCP Client are ticked
And now reboot -

Download http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/files/download/187-tfc-temp-file-cleaner-by-oldtimer/ TFC Cleaner by Old Timer to your desktop -
Double click on the icon and click Start - NOTE - This will close the desktop, so make sure you have no current work open - Reboot at end -

See how things go after another Reboot -
