Recently My HP Pavillion a6455 which is running windows 7 Ultimate has acting rather strabgely and more so annoyingly.

If I put my computer into sleep mode before i go to bed I often wake in the middle of the night to find the computer on and nothing on the screen (Monitor is in Stand-By), I have tried hiiing CTRL-ALT_DEL and nothing happens, tried windows key and also tried ALT-TAB to get out of what it is doing but nothing happens.
Even if it does not awake itself in the night when i come to use it the next day i still have the same problem and the only way out is to power down my machine with the power button and when it boots up it says Windows is being resumed rather than being started and when this happens it takes at least 5-9 mins before i can actually do anything much with it and I also cannot connect to my network either, the only way I have found to get out of this is by resetting the computer yet again from the start menu and this loads up fine in the normal time and everything works ok.

So Far I have ran scans with SuperAntiSPyware, MBAM amd also AVG Free - MBAM found a few bits but managed to clear them ok.

I have had a report from MBAM that says there is an entry called PUP.CrossFireGen and under the Item Category it says HKCR\Crossriderapp0000435.SandBox.1, This means nothing to me but instead of just deleting it I looked on a few different links on google to try and research it a bit and from what I could find it is apparently a developer framework for programmers that make apps for Google Chrome so I decided not to delete it until I had asked you guys about it.

As I was saying about the coming out of sleep problem previously I forgot to mention that when I say the computer was waking itself up randomly in the night I have checked that no programs at all are set to update late at night and also switched of any peripherals that were able to wake the computer as well. The strange thing is it just seems like the fans are going but nothing else seems to be happening at all, Because when I used to do late night updates if i touched the mouse it would turn the monitor on and I could see what it was doing (which it wont do now either).

I really do someone can help me with this problem as it is driving me crazy.

Thanks in Advance

Steve

I have also done double full scans with all of them.

I hope someone out there can help me with this very annoying problem.

Thanks is Advance

Steve

Hello,

I will be helping you with your problems

Some points for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us

  • Please do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.
    • We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
  • Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
    • Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
  • Please read every post completely before doing anything.
    • Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
  • Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
    • A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.

NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.

NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of hartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.

NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.

----------------------------------------------

Please do the following:

Step 1

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.
  • Save it to your Desktop.
  • Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
  • A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Step 2

Please download Farbar Service Scanner to your Desktop and run it on the computer with the issue.
  • Make sure the following options are checked:
    • Internet Services
    • Windows Firewall
    • System Restore
    • Security Center/Action Center
    • Windows Update
    • Windows Defender
  • Press "Scan".
  • It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
  • Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Step 3

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Devices
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files
Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

NOTE:When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Step 4

  • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (MBAM)
  • Click on the tab update, then click Check for Updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Then on the Scanner tab select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
  • Post the log in your next reply.

NOTE: Be sure to restart the computer.

The log can also be found here:
C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt
Or at C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\log-date.txt

Hi MadStevo,

Please do the following next:

Step 1

Your Microsoft Windows installation is out of date. Microsoft continually releases security and stability updates for its supported operating systems and you should always apply these to help keep your PC secure. Out-of-date Windows installations represent a risk to your system and are also a conduit for the spread of malware. You should run the Windows Update program from your start menu to access the latest updates to your operating system (information can be found here). The latest service pack (SP1) can be obtained directly from Microsoft here.

Step 2

I'd like us to scan your machine with ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista/Windows 7 users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Hold down Control and click on this link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
  • Click the Posted Image button.
  • For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    • Click on esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    • Double click on the Posted Image
      icon on your desktop.
  • Check "YES, I accept the Terms of Use."
  • Click the Start button.
  • Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  • Under scan settings, check "Scan Archives" and "Remove found threats"
  • Click Advanced settings and select the following:
    • Scan potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  • When the scan completes, click List Threats
  • Click Export, and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  • On ESET: Click the Back button, then the Finish button.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Step 3

Please downloadSUPERAntiSpyware Free to your desktop

  • Double-click SUPERAntiSypware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use SUPERAntiSpyware to scan and remove malware from your computer Guide.
  • An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
  • If it will not start, go to Start > All Programs > SUPERAntiSpyware and click on Alternate Start.
  • If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here. Double-click on the hyperlink for Download Installer and save SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to your desktop. Then double-click on SASDEFINITIONS.EXE to install the definitions.)
  • In the Main Menu, click the Preferences... button.
  • Click the "General and Startup" tab, and under Start-up Options, make sure "Start SUPERAntiSpyware when Windows starts" box is unchecked.
  • Click the "Scanning Control" tab, and under Scanner Options, make sure the following are checked (leave all other options as they are set):
    • Close browsers before scanning.
    • Scan for tracking cookies.
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
  • Click the "Close" button to leave the Control Center screen.

Now boot your computer into Safe Mode.

  • Back on the main screen, under "Select Scan Type" check the box for Complete Scan.
  • Make sure that Enable Rescue Scan is not checked.
  • Click the Scan your computer... button.
  • After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
  • A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
  • If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes" and reboot normally.

To retrieve the scan log after reboot, launch SUPERAntiSpyware again.
  • Click the View Scan Logs button at the bottom.
  • This will open the Scanner Logs Window.
  • Click on the log to highlight it and then click on View Selected Log to open it.
  • Copy and paste the scan log results in your next reply.
Note: Some types of malware will disable security tools. If SUPERAntiSpyware will not install, please refer to these instructions for using the SUPERAntiSpyware Installer. If SUPERAntiSpyware is already installed but will not run, then follow the instructions for using RUNSAS.EXE to launch the program.

Hi MadStevo,

Let's see if there's any more malware found:

Step1

Please click HERE to download Kaspersky Virus Removal Tool (click on the Download link for Version 11).
NOTE. This is quite large file, so be patient.

  • Double click on the file you just downloaded and let it install.
  • It will install to your desktop (be patient; it may take a while).
  • Accept license agreement and click "Start" button.
  • Click on Settings button Posted Image
    • In Scan scope leave pre-checked items as they're and also checkmark My Computer
    • In Actions checkmark Select action: (disinfect; delete if disinfection fails) instead of preselected Prompt on detection
  • Click on Automatic Scan tab and then click on Start scanning button.
  • Before it is done it may prompt for action regardless of the setting so choose delete if prompted.
  • When the scan is done NO log will be produced.
  • Click on Report button Posted Image then on Automatic Scan report tab.
  • Right click anywhere within right pane, click Select All then right click again and click Copy.
  • This will copy the items that it found to the clipboard you can then open notepad (go to start then run then type in notepad) and choose paste to paste the contents into Notepad.
  • You can save this on the desktop.
  • Post the contents of the document in your next reply.

Step 2

How is your computer running now?

Regards, dev00790

OK,,,I have done this scan which took 7 & 1/2 hours to complete.
It reported that no threats were found but when I clicked on select all the program seems to have got stuck and if I click anywhere on the app screen it gives me the option to end the process or cancel and leave it doing what it is doing.
If You would like me to do another scan I will try again later but as I said it didn't detect anything.

I am really hoping you don't need this.

So far I have avoided using the sleep button and all seems to be working ok, but as we haven't really found anything to remove yet I am not sure whether it is fixed or now.

I can't do it now but I will try sleep mode later and see what happens.

If you have any other things you would like me to try then please let me know.

Hi Madstevo,

Please end the process

Please update MBAM, then run a full scan.
Post the log in your next reply.

Hi,
I will post another MBAM scan for you ASAP, But last night I tgought I would try putting it into sleep mode to see if the problem was still there and luckily it seemed to start straight up the way that it should, so somewhere along the line i think we may have removed whatever it was that was causing the problem.
Will post the MBAM scan later this afternoon.

Thanks for all of your help,

Stevo
