windows update files are no longer installed

I was trying to download & install a new antivirus and found out it could not be installed because windows can not be updated. It states that the files required to use windows update are no longer registered or installed on my computer. I have no idea how or when this happened. My updates have always been set to automatic. My os is xp with service pack 3. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Press "Scan".
It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

I changed my security service to mcafee. When I tried to download & install, it stated that it is unable to read my system configurations. When I checked with mcafee, I was told that windows needed to be updated before it could be installed. That's when I found that windows updates are no longer registered or on my computer. It was suggested that I need to re-install the whole system (which I am trying to avoid).

Also I see that you have Ccleaner installed.
open ccleaner hit the tools button then startup second one down below uninstall then in the bottom right hand corner of ccleaner hit save to text file.Save it to your desktop and post the startup.txt here in your next reply.


Hit the start button in lower left hand corner. Then in the run box type msconfig, then hit the services tab then put a check mark in hide microsoft services what is listed there,after hiding microsoft services?Please post back to us in a vertical list.

Make sure all the settings are the same in the screen shots That I have uploaded for you. Make sure and back up your registry also create a restore point.This is standard for any registry adjustments.

Finally, I do not know how to backup the registry or create a restore point. Can you guide me on this? Also, when you say make sure all the settings are the same, do you mean the highlighted ones in the screenshot should all have checkmarks? If that is the case, should repair windows updates need a checkmark? That was my original problem, windows updates are no longer installed.

Finally, I do not know how to backup the registry or create a restore point. Can you guide me on this? Also, when you say make sure all the settings are the same, do you mean the highlighted ones in the screenshot should all have checkmarks? If that is the case, should repair windows updates need a checkmark? That was my original problem, windows updates are no longer installed.

Guess what? Windows updates are back! I guess the repair tool did the trick. Thank you so much for your assistance. However, I still am not able to install the antivirus that came from my new internet service provider. It was able to download but, the installation was taking a long time. I let it run for almost one hour before I cancelled the install. I am going to contact mcafee unless you have a solution for this, too.
Also, I tried to access the internet thru google chrome today but, it did not work. I was able to access through Firefox. This has not happened in the past. Any explanations?
Finally, should I delete/remove the registry backup and its components that was created before I installed the windows repair tool?

FWIW: Just because you ISP gives you an AV package...you don't have to use it.

I believe that that there are lighter, less obnoxious AV programs...that are at least as qualitatively good as any McAfee product.
