Unknown issues

Hi....I'm not sure what my machine (running XP home edition if my memory serves me correctly....at work at the moment) has picked up (kids had been messing around on it) nor am I really sure what to do to begin fixing it. I know that I cannot access the internet except in safe mode (and quite honestly, i cannot recall what I did in order to get the internet to work in the safe mode). I was able to download the updated Malwarebytes when I had it working in safe mode.

Aside from not being able to access the net, I haven't really noticed anything that unusual about it (no pop ups or anything phishing for any information). Cannot get my defender 5 in 1 antivirus software to update (since it relies on the net to update) and I cannot get windows automatic updates to work either.

What would be the best course of action to get online and run some sort of diagnostic scan that can help identify what the problem is so I can then find out out to go about fixing it?

Step 1

Download Security Check by screen317 from here.

• Save it to your Desktop.
• Double click SecurityCheck.exe and follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
• A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Step 2

Please download Farbar Service Scanner to your Desktop and run it on the computer with the issue.

• Make sure the following options are checked:
  • Internet Services
  • Windows Firewall
  • System Restore
  • Security Center/Action Center
  • Windows Update
  • Windows Defender
• Press "Scan".
• It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
• Please copy and paste the log to your reply.

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:

• Flush DNS
• Report IE Proxy Settings
• Reset IE Proxy Settings
• Report FF Proxy Settings
• Reset FF Proxy Settings
• List content of Hosts
• List IP configuration
• List Winsock Entries
• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs
• List Devices
• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
• List Minidump Files

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Step 4

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (aka MBAM): http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes'
  Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad.
• Post the log back here.

Be sure to restart the computer.

Please download FixExec from link

To use FixExec to fix your file associations, simply download the 32-bit version of the program to a location that you have write access to. A good location to download this file is your Windows desktop. Once the file is downloaded, simply run the program, accept the license, and let it go to work. The program will first terminate any programs that are launched from locations that are known to be used by Malware. It will then repair your .bat, .exe, and .com file extensions so that these types of programs can launch again.

If you attempt to run FixExec.exe and the program is quickly terminated or you receive an alert from a computer virus, simply rename the FixExec.exe file to FixExec.com. In order to properly rename the file you must make sure you have Windows configured to view file extensions. To enable this, please follow the steps in this guide: link

Please download Rkill by Grinler and save it to your desktop.Link 1

• Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
• If using Vista, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.
• A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
• If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
• If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
• If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

Do not reboot your computer after running rkill as the malware programs will start again. Or if rebooting is required run it again.

The mouse worked in Safe mode with networking....(Didn't try just plain safe mode alone).

Malwarebytes is a bit more difficult to run as it will not update since I cannot access the internet....(getting your recommended files from a clean laptop and a flash drive). It still states when I run Malwarebytes that it is outdated by 79 days.

When prompted if i wish to update it, it gives an error message as follows:

There is a missing registry key which is preventing you from getting online.
Before we fix that, let's reduce your exposure to getting more malware, by updating some outdated software:

Step 1

Important Note: Your version of Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.

• Microsoft: 'Unprecedented Wave of Java Exploitation'
• Drive-by Trojan preying on out-of-date Java installations
• Ghosts of Java Haunt Users

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:

• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
• Select your Platform.
• Under Which should I choose?, check the box for Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.

Go to > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.

• Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u31-windows-i586.exe (or jre-6u30-windows-x64.exe for 64-bit) to install the newest version.
• If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
• When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
• If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
• The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.

-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:

• Go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter.

Adobe Reader is outdated

• Please download the latest version of Adobe Reader from http://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/ to your Desktop

• When it is installed restart the computer

Removed and reinstalled Java (downloaded setup file from flash drive).

When I tried to update Adobe reader (again from setup file from flash drive), I saved the setup file to my desktop. When I started installation, it removes the setup icon from the desktop, acts as though it is installing but gives an error message

"Installation encountered errors

Actionlist not found"

When I clicked on DONE, it tries to open internet explorer to the adobe website but the internet is still not working.

I went ahead and removed Adobe reader 8.3 (from the control panel) and restarted machine in hopes that removing it would help.

Saved the Mozilla Firefox setup file and installed the latest version....restarted the machine and then ran the registry file you referenced in your last post.

Tried opening Firefox and opening a page.....still not accessing any internet pages though.....

Hope I didn't do anything too stupid with removing the outdated Adobe......

Downloaded wuauserv.reg as you suggested (on flash drive), saved to desktop....double clicked and received the following message:
"Information in C;\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Administrator\Desktop\wuauserv.reg has been successfully entered into the registry."

Ran mbam (again from flash drive but could not update since i cannot access internet)....Log follows:

Restarted machine after scan....Tried accessing internet after restart but there is no noticeable difference (still will not log on). I know the internet connection is good by the way as I'm using it on my laptop to respond....
