Seeking guidance. My Windows XP runs fast until I surf. Then it gets very slow. And, to again speed it up, I have to defragment and clean registry. Can't find mal or spyware as the culprit. Suggestions??

Hello all!

I'm new to this forum so please excuse me if this is posted in the wrong place. I've been having an ongoing problem with an EXTREMELY SLOW PC! It will stall/hang/freeze for up to 15 minutes at times just by opening simple programs. It also will crash/re-boot at random for no apparent reason. Even when sitting idle this happens. I've run CHKDSK to see if I had a hardware problem but it comes back fine. I first thought it could be virus/spyware/malware so I scanned with Trend Micro 2013, and found nothing. I then asked the wonderful people at spywarewarrior.com for help with my prob. After extensive searching and removing items with several tools I was assured that there's no type of malware hiding on my PC. HOWEVER, I still have the problem. This is why they referred me here as they are malware specialists and nothing more. Here is a link to show what I've done already. http://www.spywarewarrior.com/viewtopic.php?p=229527#229527. The main problem found was my available space on my C:/ partition. It was critically low! I removed ALL unnecessary files folders and programs and still only managed to free up 3GB of space on a 20GB partition. I had this very same problem a while back when I only had 10GB partitioned. I doubled it thinking it would be more than enough but after time it has filled once again. I now have 40GB allotted for the C:/ partition but still did not get back to the speed I had before. I can see that something is constantly writing to my hard disk. In the past 6 months I've re-sized my partition twice but have NOT fixed my problem! I have also run Startuplite to remove any unnecessary programs but it finds NOTHING unnecessary. For the life of me I can't figure out where this space is going or why my PC freezes and/or re-boots at random. PLEASE HELP! I don't want to resort to reformatting and reloading windows unless ABSOLUTELY necessary.

Thanks

I'm a new member too and my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1545, expanded RAM 8Gb) had become extremely slow (well slow compared to optimum) recently

I have always used firewalls, defrag (Smart Defrag from IOBit) and so on so I didn't expect much

However, just yesterday I ran Malwarebytes, followed by Junkware Removal Tool by thisisu, and I can report extremely significant improvement in speed

any more tips for quick things to do? speed is near normal now but I feel there is more

I have a REAL SLOW PC

Its an Intel Duel Core with 2 GB of memory and 120 GB disk laptop
It Has Symantec Endpoint protection on it and it has gotten really slow in the last 2 weeks.

I'm not exactly sure what was happening prior to the slowness as this is not my PC

It takes 10 (feels like 15) minutes to startup windows.
I ran builtin diags and no problems were found
I bumped the memory up to 3 GB and no difference.
If I look at task manager the graph shows a constant 50% CPU utilization but if I look at the tasks it shows that the System Idle Process is 98 %

Starting any application takes forever (and a day), even after the app is loaded. CPU stays at 50% with System IDLE Process at 98%

I have run a full Symantec scan after doing a virus update. I installed a free demo of MalwareBytes and ran a full scan - I ran a few rootkit detectors I even inspected the windows startup with msconfig and http://www.windowsstartup.com/ and I don;t see anything out of the ordinary oh and I ran Microsoft windows Offline Defender (and some other MS tools) The all come up clean

I have moved the hard drive to another unit and still it is slow
I ran a disk defrag and after a day of processing the disk is almost defragmented

ts still real slow and its Kicking my butt
I plan on running ADAWARE and SPYBOT but I am at a loss

Can anyone provide some help ?

Download and run CCleaner and TFC.exe, both free. Worth a try.

you can use disk defgrantment for this as it will remove all the blank space. you can also download a software to remove these viruses/spyware. :cherry:
