Unable to Connect to Internet

Original Thread

Short version: Virus took out internet, and a number of other things on a machine. SweetTech responded and has been working to clean that up. Despite multiple attempts after clearing the infections, we're still unable to get a better response than "limited to no connectivity" (the yellow exclamation point) between the computer and my router (wired), when attempting to access my home's internet. Can someone please help us get connected again?

Okay, I believe the issue is relating to the Default Gateway entry not being set. Networking is an area that is not my forte, I'm going to ask that you create a new thread in the Networking forum, and mention how I believe the issue maybe with the Default Gateway (you can even include the MiniToolBox log file in that topic. Lets see if the folks over in the Networking forum can help get us back connected to the internet, and then you can post back here and we can wrap things up.

have you tried resetting the stack?

Bring up the command prompt (run as administrator if vista or 7) and type in these 2 commands:
netsh int ip reset reset.txt
netsh winsock reset catalog.log

then reboot the system.

You can also try reinstalling the network drivers.

If you're sure the system is clean this may fix the issue.

Im sorry, I thought I had replied to this post. I must have typed a response and forgot to hit post.


Have you updated the drivers for your network card?

The user has no recovery discs to load the drivers from. Is there some portable software I can load up that will identify the hardware's make and model, so I can download it once I know that?

Are there any yellow exclamation points in device manager?

I apologize for the lack of response. Personal life craziness at the end of the month...

Anyway, no. There are no warnings or errors listed in Device Manager. Everything is collapsed and looking as it should.

I would try reinstalling the nVidia nFOrce chipset and ethernet drivers.

Assuming I did it right, I found the drivers (10DE [mfg] 03EF [drv]) and reinstalled them using the download I found in the PCI vendor list (pcidatabase.com), but I still have the same results. A yellow alert in the network centre of Vista that tells me the connection dies between the computer and my router, and does not connect to anything beyond that.

The driver you would get would be from http://www.nvidia.com.

Can you go to Device Manager, right click on the yellow exclamation point and select properties then go to details then hardware ids.

Copy and paste the results.

There are no yellow exclamation points. Here are the NVIDIA devices I was able to find.

Nvidia Geforce 8500 GT (VEN_10DE&DEV_0421)

2x IDE ATA/ATAPI Nvidia Nforce Serial ATA Controller (VEN_10DE&DEV_03F6)

Nforce 10/100 mbps Ethernet (VEN_10DE&DEV_03EF)

That's what I found, that's what I installed. There were never any yellow nor red logos indicating an issue with the hardware in device manager.
