Updating Bookeen Cybook Opus? (help needed)

I have just received a Bookeen Cybook Opus ereader as a gift. On visiting the Bookeen site I found that there is an update from version 2.0 to 2.1 available. In the download instructions it says that after unzipping I should "Copy the file “update_kernel” to the root of the storage card". There is a Micro SD card slot in the reader but at present I have no card. Is it not possible to update the ereader without this card?. There is a 1GB internal memory on the device and I wondered if it was possible to upgrade to that instead.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-MA770T-UD3, CPU: AMD Athlon II X3 450 Processor, Memory: OCZ 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1333MHz,Graphics: PowerColor HD 5750 1GB GDDR5,
PSU: Corsair 430W CX PSU 4x SATA 1x PCI-E, Hard Drive:Samsung SpinPoint F3 500GB Hard Drive SATAII 7200rpm 16MB Cache.

I couldn't locate anything on it. I could find the product, but not a lot of external information about it. I would have looked over their instructions, but they wanted me to login to look at the download section. I don't want a login if I don't use the item.

The bottom line is, that may indeed be the only way to do it.

So what I would do is get a cheap micro SD, put the update (extracted, of course) as the only thing on it and follow the instructions the maker provides.

There is a Micro SD card slot in the reader but at present I have no card.

The Cybook Opus supports micro SD cards up to 8 GB.
