Hoping someone here can help me, because none of my malware scanners / anti-virus seem to be catching whatever virus my computer seems to have. I noticed today my ccleaner had lots of internet explorer temporary files to clean each time it was run...and I became suspicious because I never use internet explorer (I use firefox). So I checked my task manager and I have this iexplore.exe - Embedding entry taking up ton of resources, and when I delete it, it comes back within a few seconds. I also noted some task.eng with {random registry values} I don't typically see here, that also come back a few seconds after I remove. I run Windows Vista, and have run malwarebytes anti-malware, Spybot search and destroy and superantispyware, which have not helped. I also have Avira free antivirus, which tells me my system is clean.

Help is appreciated. Thanks.

Here are the DDS logs and attachment for my infected PC:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer!

I am HelpBot: an automated program designed to help the Bleeping Computer Staff better assist you! This message contains very important information, so please read through all of it before doing anything.

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

To help Bleeping Computer better assist you please perform the following steps:

***************************************************

Posted Image In order to continue receiving help at BleepingComputer.com, YOU MUST tell me if you still need help or if your issue has already been resolved on your own or through another resource! To tell me this, please click on the following link and follow the instructions there.

CLICK THIS LINK >>> http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/logreply/426533 <<< CLICK THIS LINK

If you no longer need help, then all you needed to do was the previous instructions of telling me so. You can skip the rest of this post. If you do need help please continue with Step 2 below.

***************************************************

Posted Image If you still need help, I would like you to post a Reply to this topic (click the "Add Reply" button in the lower right hand of this page). In that reply, please include the following information:

  • If you have not done so already, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • A new DDS and GMER log. For your convenience, you will find the instructions for generating these logs repeated at the bottom of this post.
    • Please do this even if you have previously posted logs for us.
    • If you were unable to produce the logs originally please try once more.
    • If you are unable to create a log please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.
  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • Upon completing the above steps and posting a reply, another staff member will review your topic and do their best to resolve your issues.

Thank you for your patience, and again sorry for the delay.

***************************************************

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

As I am just a silly little program running on the BleepingComputer.com servers, please do not send me private messages as I do not know how to read and reply to them! Thanks!

Still having this same issue. iexpore.exe runs in the background (sometimes more than 1 instance) taking up system resources. Sometimes Google gets redirected as well. I've noticed if I go into internet explorer and set it to try and access the Internet through a 0.0.0.0 proxy server (so it can't reach the Internet) the process seems to stop...but the problem is definitely not fixed. [By the way, that's how it is right now, so I noticed this DDS log I'm attaching doesn't have the iexplore process going - let me know if I need to rerun after putting internet explorer back to normal] I tried a bunch of system tools recommended on this site and others prior to posting my message, and keep updating and running my antivirus and malware software, but nothing has helped. There was another post I had read with PC symptoms basically exactly like mine I saw that I tried to copy (can't remember if it was this site or another), but it didn't help

This all started after my PC reset itself that day I originally posted. I had to unhide basically everything on my desktop, go into the registry to re-enable task manager, and my start menu was pretty much destroyed from something I must have clicked. I feel like I've got the PC back to normal - other than the ieplore and google redirecting now, which I cannot figure out at all. Appreciate the help here - I've been waiting as patiently as possible for my turn to finally figure this all out :)

Here is my new DDS log. I have Vista 64, so no GMER. Also, I do not have an original windows CD anymore with this PC (I had an OEM recovery cd that came with it but don't have a clue where it is right now - the computer is a few years old.

Thanks in advance for helping nasdaq. Appreciate what you guys do here.

Here is my combofix log. It took about an hour to run. I went into Internet Explorer prior to running this and removed the 0.0.0.0 proxy server I put in to prevent the ie popups and process from occuring (in case its important)

I installed the new Java update, however I do not understand the Vista Service Pack update request. I have service pack 2 installed. Going to Windows update tells me I up up to date on everything (and winver says I am on version 6 Build 6002: Service Pack 2). I believe the first combofix log I posted below also confirms this. However I saw the message from security check that I had an out of date service pack - not sure why though.

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK
IMPORTANT! If you receive an error message while running DeFogger, please post the log defogger_disable which will appear on your desktop.

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed. Or when this computer is clean.

Please run the aswMBR tool again and post a fresh log.

run the aswMBR.exe tool. Select the FixMBR button.

Important > you need to wait for the tool to report ... Infection fixed successfully
Do not reboot the machine until it has said so.

When you see the message restart the computer normally.

Run aswBMR.exe normally and post the log.

Run the ComboFix tool again and post the log also.

Please let me know what problem persists.

Re-ran aswMBR and clicked fixmbr. It doesn't say infection fixed successfully - it says the machine must be restarted to finish cleanup. When I click yes the machine turns off - and when it starts up again it asks if I want to go into safe mode because the machine went off expectantly.

I re-ran the logs anyway, just in case:

Now run the aswMBR.exe tool. Select the FixMBR button.

Important > you need to wait for the tool to report ... Infection fixed successfully
Do not reboot the machine until it has said so.

When you see the message restart the computer normally.

Run aswBMR.exe normally and post the log.

Please let me know if the problem persists.

Nasdaq - don't know if you read both my posts above this one. I ran that tool after running defogger and posted the logs before the combofix log (I split them up because the aswMBR tool kept telling me I needed to reboot to finish the cleaning process and either shutdown my PC unexpectedly (and brings up safemode) or if I manually reboot once I saw that message - nothing seemed to happen, plus combofix takes me over an hour to run each time. I don't know what to do now.
