Logging in thru Windows Live? Not sure if that has any effect, but it's worth looking at, IMO.

ETA: Just read that Metro apps won't work on anything lower than 1024 x 768

Nope..i just reset my states back to right after i installed and no apps are launching in vmware or virtualbox.

1) Needs Workstation 8, won't work in WS 7 or VMware Player.

2) I installed the 32 bit from ISO, chose the custom wizard, highest hardware level (Workstation 8), install operating system later, Windows 7 (32 bit) as the Guest OS, 1 core, 2560mb RAM, NAT network, 40 GB SCSI disk. I removed the floppy before installing cuz I don't need it. VMware tools installed fine. There are some graphic bugs on my machine at times, but only briefly. YMMV...

Host is Windows 7 SP1 x64 on an Intel Core i3 CPU M 350 @ 2.27GHz

Lot's of people reporting this problem (Apps won't launch in Metro) screen resolution seems to be the main "culprit" so far, reportedly needs (at least) 1024 x 768.

Hope this helps.

All my metro UI icons work, the weather icon is cool, it came up with a nice animated background with the weather info, trouble was it started out in Anaheim, CA, guess I have to tell the OS I am not in Anaheim, or CA.

Actually when I installed it, it never asked me what my global location is.

Edit found the time zone under Control Panel "General"

It was set to the Pacific time zone, fixed it and now I have my local weather.

Most of the APs relie on your windows LIVE id to work.

This must be the case, because my default image on my desktop is my image of my cat oreo, which is the same image I use here for an avatar and my Windows live ID image.

Ditto re: Anaheim Ca & not asked location during install & ditto default image is my Windows live Avatar (& BC profile pic), Jack Nickelson "You can't handle..."

Just for giggles I tried to set it to Autologon (netplwiz) --no go. I changed my password in Control Panel>>Users successfully cuz my original win live password was a very difficult to type10 digit random character pw...

EDIT: You can change/add/pin/...etc your location by rt clicking on the city's name...a taskbar opens...

FWIW, Anaheim, CA is where the //build/ conference was held, which was where they officially released the Preview.

This was the clue that I needed. Metro UI apps will only work on a resolution supported and offered by Windows. As many of us are using this in Vmware 8, we have the ability to change the screen and thus the resolution to anything we want, even ones that are not natively supported by Windows 8.

Once we do that we are no longer able to run the apps. Therefore, if you cannot run an app, simply make sure that your using a resolution offered by Windows 8 and that it is above 1024x768.

Bbbbut... I'm using 1366x768 & it works fine, EXCEPT for Metro "Control Panel" (sometimes when scrolling up or down the "subjects" for lack of of a better term, don't move)

Another possible reason/solution: Metro Apps other than Ctrl Pnl, Desktop, Explorer & Ex-PLODE-r 10 only work in full screen mode using resolutions above 1024x768??

EDIT TO ADD: OOPS, misread your instrux, disregard 1st line...however I have noticed the same behavior in less than full screen with the Library pane open on the left and/or using "Console View" under the view tab. Let me know if u observe the same

Thanks Grinler!

MSDN home page added these two lines to their system requirements, I know because I copied/pasted the "original" here, they weren't mentioned: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic418872.html

  • Taking advantage of touch input requires a screen that supports multi-touch
  • To run Metro style Apps, you need a screen resolution of 1024 X 768 or greater

Windows 7 is the new XP; Windows Vista is passing the torch it got from Windows ME to Windows 8.

That is quite the unfair comparison. I had used Windows Vista for quite a while about 2 years prior to Windows 7 which was needed for school and had no issues with it. Windows ME would fail to even run on a system that was well over specced for it.

Only thing I had issues with for Windows Vista was HP's poor developmental quality assurance tests. All my other hardware and software worked on it flawlessly and had 0 issues with stability or performance.

Vista was forgotten pretty quickly after Windows 7 came out.
