Perhaps if Redmond was paying more attention to the blood being shed in the GUI wars in the Linux community since the new KDE and Gnome versions were released they would have avoided manipulating the desktop in such a manner.

/me waits for Andrew to start complaining about the lack of CLI and the inability to run apt-get.

Just happened across this review...
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2400010,00.asp
In addition to what the author complains about, I'd just add that people who are used to using a computer for actual work instead of just bleeping around on Facebook will probably not love Windows 8. It's cool! It's modern! It's...not really an improvement if you just need to type up some spreadsheets or documents!

Yep I was barely able to install it via Virtual. This is gonna flop miserably.

The only thing good I've seen is that it boots faster. But I'm sure I could get my computer to boot just as fast with Windows 7 with a new third-party video card. :thumbup2:

Nick Heath at TechRepublic comments on the new Windows 8 Consumer Preview.

http://www.techrepublic.com/blog/cio-insights/windows-8-cheat-sheet/236?tag=nl.e098

I installed it on one of my laptops last night, so am now ready to play, LOL. Certainly is different from the Developer Preview. Lots to learn (and swear at).

Cheers

But it is a Microsoft product and everyone is supposed to absolutely LOVE it!
Didn't you all get the memo?

Yes, but I can't read.

Agreed! Was just thinking this the other day after booting back up into Windows and forgetting which shell I was in for a minute. (Although synaptic does save me from having to remember as much.)

Well, after a quick install of virtualbox on Sid I gave it a shot, x64. Even in a VM it seems pretty quick. IE was fine and when a link started streaming and the volume was on high I jumped! (Even 7 required audio drivers...8 must be stealing from my linux build.) ;c) Updates seem fine, all 6 of them. I would have explored further but I got stuck on the "desktop" trying to find out how to open the menu... these side or corner prompts kind of suck. Had to widen the VM window to make it easier to grab. Can't say I'll be rushing to buy it but then I hated the WinPhone as well and this is just more of the same ugly. Still, nice to have a sneak peek. Next time I load it I need to see if we still have a command prompt or if that's taboo now. I recall seeing powershell...

Installs fast, boots fast,O/S uses less than 10GBs of disk space, looks fresh and new. Still has almost all of the features Windows 7 has, you just have to learn where everything is again lol. Don't look for the start button because its not a button its a page get over it already, its not your grandfathers Windows anymore its time to move forward. If your using Oracle VirtualBox for the first time it looks better in scaled mode than window mode. Cheers

Please...

I might not always know what I like but ugly I can point out easily. Dropping a button to do a corner grab just wasn't obvious. Yes, I figured it out without RTFM but I could see standard users making support calls. ;c)

The other point still stands, with iPad HD on the way I was expecting something more. Although the supported architecture is a nice step up I was hoping for some bling or power features for today's newer systems. Win 3.x to 95 type of jump.

Bear in mind that Windows 8 isn't even finished yet. This is just a sample so there are not going to be many drivers available for it. Whether or not Windows 8 turns out to be a good OS remains to be seen. But, given the history, I'd wager that Windows 8 is going to stink very much; Windows 9 is going to be great, though.

OK, I've had it for a day now... Windows 8 = Windows NT 6.2 Since Windows 7 was merely NT 6.1, there is no compelling reason for anyone currently on 7 to even remotely consider upgrading. As a desktop OS, I agree... It Stinks!

IMHO, the only way Microsoft is going to avoid another Vista/Edsel moment is to relegate Win8 to JUST TABLETS and continue to sell Win7 for the traditional desktop market.
