Hi:

I am having issues with my computer(actually it's my sisters) first it kept rebooting over and over again and so I used Norton 360's bootdisc feature and that seemed to help. Everything loaded up normally or so I thought.

Did I mention my sister has a habit of downloading things when I have told her constantly NOT to do this? Bearshare and Limewire and goodness know what else that I don't know about!

What I have tried so far;

I have done a complete scan with malwarebytes but found nothing. Ditto for Norton 360. However, I ran a scan using SAS and found some cookies that I didn't find with CCleaner and they looked very suspicious.

I did a scan with Ad-Aware and found the following and deleted them.

Trojan.Win32.Generic.pakcobra
Win32.toolbar.Mediabar831
Win32.Toolbar

I did a defrag and even used Registry Mechanic to get rid of registry entries left over by Limewire and Bearshare but the computer is still slow as molasses running up a hill on a cold winter's day.

There still must be some serious problems as her as her computer is slow as HECK! It takes what seems like a millenium to open folders, applications etc. and the same goes for closing things. Right this second as I am typing this message the cursor just seems to hang and I have to wait until it starts up so that I can finish typing. Needless to say I am VERY aggravated about this as this happens daily. Things that should take a second take five minutes or more to do and it's driving me crazy. Then there's the times when I might be in doing something in one screen or using a certain application and the window just suddenly minimizes of it's own accord. When I use the tab button it take a while for it to go to the screen I want...if it does it at all. Then there's this problem how he screen goes white(you still see the task bars) but otherwise it's like a snowstorm whiteout and it stays that way for maybe a minute...or more. Once again as I am attempting to post this message the computer froze from 1:45 to 1:49pm!!! It has taken me nearly an hour to write this post that should have only taken me maybe 5 to 10 minutes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

Hi Broni:

Thank you for responding to my dilemma.

I have downloaded Security Check, Mini Toolbox and GMER. I already have malwarebytes installed and have ran a scan using it but will do so again.

I will post back and with the necessary information as soon as possible.

Thanks again!

I don't see anything malicious there.

You surely could use another 512MB of RAM:

Total physical RAM: 446.48 MB

Download System Information for Windows (SIW free version)
No installation required.

After it scans your computer, navigate to Hardware>Sensors and post all info from there.

Hi Broni:

You don't see anything malicious??? Not that I'm an expect but it just seems a little strange that just the lack of 512MB of memory is making the computer this bloody slow. I wasn't exaggerating when I said that it was taking me an hour to do things that should take five minutes. Today the computer just kept stopping/hanging...but that's only after it actually got started moving in the first dang place!

My sister's computer memory is as follows; she originally had 512MB total memory which consisted of 2 256MB sticks of DDR PC3200 (200MHz). I added 2 more sticks one was 256MB DDR PC2700 (166 MHz) and the other was 256MB DDR PC2100 (133 MHZ). I know that you're probably going to suggest that all the memory needs to be the same speed and MHz and I will let me sister know and she can purchase it at Microcenter as it's the best place to buy memory reasonably priced.

Frankly it doesn't seem all that much faster and that's why I question whether that isn't some malicious thingy hiding in plain sight on the system.

I have downloaded the SIW software you suggested and will post the log once I have the chance.

Thanks,

Your computer issues can be caused by number of reasons.
We have to take it one step at a time.

As I said, so far, I don't see anything malicious, but that's only one of possibilities.

I'll wait for your SIW report.

Hi Broni:

Here is SIW Information you requested...I think. I say this because when you asked me to download SIW and you "when it's finished scanning you wanted me to go to the hardware section and give you that information". Well, for the life of me I could not find anything in the SIW app that said "Scan". The closest thing I could find that was the "save" icon that said quick report so that's what I used. If that isn't correct you will have to give me instructions because as I said I don't see anything under any of the words on the toolbar that (after clicking on any of them) that says scan system.

Not to put pressure on you as I really appreciate all the help you have given, but if you still don't find anything wrong then I will just have to do something that I was REALLY trying to avoid which is reformat the drive because I really can't take this slow %&@ computer too much longer. I mean really there's slow and then there's Uber slow. I tried to update my sister's Ad-aware starting at 9am it was 10:15 when I used task manager to close it because it was still at only 10% progress after being open for an hour and 15 minutes.

I would understand if she had a whole lot of large applications installed that eat into her memory etc. but she doesn't. The biggest app she has installed is the Windows OS itself followed by Windows Office XP Pro.

Anyway, thanks for all your help so far.

if you still don't find anything wrong then I will just have to do something that I was REALLY trying to avoid which is reformat the drive

You seem to to be very impatient.
I understand your frustration, but we can't do anything to speed the investigating process up.
Any rush in solving computer problems is not a good idea.

Assuming this is taken while your laptop is idle:

Core #0 65 C (148 F) 57 C (134 F) 86 C (186 F)

...it's running hot.
Max temperature for your CPU is listed at 95C, so you're getting close.

It may be one of the reasons it runs slow.

I suggest you get a can of compressed air and clean well all vents while computer off.

Then post new set of number from SIW.

I need only this section:

Broni:

Sorry if I seem impatient and maybe I am but I've had my sister's computer for two weeks now and it hasn't gotten any faster that's why I came to Bleeping Computer figuring maybe there's a virus that you could find that I couldn't.

You said the system is running hot. Well, I don't know what the heck is going on because I did open the chasis up and used a paint brush to clean out the dirt and dust from every section (yes, the power was off and unplugged and I took my time and was very careful and gentle). I took the heat sink off the CPU and cleaned that out thoroughly.

The ONLY area I wasn't able to get into was the power supply. I did take it out of the case but still couldn't get the dust out of there like I wanted to. At the present time I don't have any compressed air but will mention this to my sister along with the memory she needs as the memory I put in was mine and I would prefer it if all the memory was the same speed etc. Question: Should I also tell her to invest in a another case fan too...would that help to cool things down inside the case???

Thanks,

I was under assumption, that we're dealing here with a laptop (AMD Sempron 3400+).
If this is desktop (AMD Sempron 64 3400+) you're grossly exceeding critical temperature listed for that CPU (69C):

Core #0 65 C (148 F) 57 C (134 F) 86 C (186 F)

You may be causing irreversible damage to your processor.
You simply can NOT be using computer in its current state.

Paint brush is not a tool for cleaning computer inside as it produces static electricity - a killer to electronic components.
I mentioned already that the only way to safely clean computer's interior is a can of compressed air.

If that doesn't help you may need to reapply thermal paste or/and install an extra fan.

I have never owned a laptop.

You may be causing irreversible damage to your processor.
You simply can NOT be using computer in its current state.

I didn't know that that gook on the heat sink was thermal paste and a necessity. I know it now and that will never happen again.

A Paint brush is not a tool for cleaning computer inside as it produces static electricity - a killer to electronic components.

I used paintbrush to clean my computer many, many times over the years at the suggestion of another IT tech and I have never had issues otherwise my board etc. would have died years ago.

I mentioned already that the only way to safely clean computer's interior is a can of compressed air.

As per your suggestion my sister purchased a couple of cans of compressed air. I then then used some to clean out her power supply as best I could.

If that doesn't help you may need to reapply thermal paste or/and install an extra fan.

We got thermal paste (which I applied under the supervision of one of the IT guys at Microcenter) and another fan which I installed when we got the computer home.

Here is the new and improved SIW Info

As you can see it's much better and I'm glad that I didn't ruin her computer by accident. However, it's still a somewhat slow but maybe it will improve in the next day or so with the addition of correct memory.

We also got a gig of PC DDR 3200 400 MHz memory which I installed. So she now has a 1.43RAM. However, both SIW and CPU-Z are both saying that what I was told was a gig of DDR PC3200 is only 512MB (SEE Logs below). I should tell you it's refurbished but still it's supposed to be 1GB. Should I call the store back and ask for another stick???

Thanks,

I used paintbrush to clean my computer many, many times over the years at the suggestion of another IT tech and I have never had issues otherwise my board etc. would have died years ago.

Just saying. That technician was wrong.

Those temperatures, maybe not perfect, but much much better.

I suggest you monitor temperatures for some time, especially when using some demanding programs, or playing videos.

If no other issues....good luck! :)

Hi Broni:

Thanks for all your sound advice :thumbup2: however, you didn't comment on the memory amount.

name lapetite=We also got a gig of PC DDR 3200 400 MHz memory which I installed.

Are both CPU-Z and SIW wrong? I don't understand why they both reported the memory stick as 512MB if it's really a 1GB???
