I got in the habit of clearing my history with CCleaner about once a day. I use Firefox and only 4 or 5 cookies would show up in CCleaner during cleaning after a whole day. Now, I'm getting 50+ EVERY time I open Firefox, even if I just go to my homepage and close it. I use the AdBlock Plus, Better Privacy, Beef Taco, and Privacy Choice Tracker Block addons that always used to do a VERY good job of blocking things. Even with these enabled, I still get all of the cookies. Another thing that happens is that if I close Firefox and try to open it, say 5 minutes later, it won't open because it is still open and I'm forced to end the task in the task manager. The memory usage for it will be astronomically high (500k-1 million+) and there are multiple (at times, 6 or more) plugin containers open. I use Norton 360 or whatever comes with Comcast and it even detected a large amount of disk usage and cpu usage and alerted me. It said it read 1.4gb of data and wrote 13gb?!? A day later it wrote another 26gb?!? So I scanned with the strictest of settings in Norton, AVG, Avast, and Malware bytes and I didn't come up with anything except 60 or so tracking cookies which I deleted. Also, I'm fairly sure non of this happens with Internet Explorer. How do I go about figuring out whats wrong and fixing this? I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate. Thank you for your time!

Please download GMER from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
  • Main Mirror
This version will download a randomly named file (Recommended)
  • Zipped Mirror
This version will download a zip file you will need to extract first. If you use this mirror, please extract the zip file to your desktop.
  • Disconnect from the Internet and close all running programs.
  • Temporarily disable any real-time active protection so your security programs will not conflict with gmer's driver.
  • Double-click on the randomly named GMER file (i.e. n7gmo46c.exe) and allow the gmer.sys driver to load if asked.
  • Note: If you downloaded the zipped version, extract the file to its own folder such as C:\gmer and then double-click on gmer.exe.

    Posted Image
  • GMER will open to the Rootkit/Malware tab and perform an automatic quick scan when first run. (do not use the computer while the scan is in progress)
  • If you receive a WARNING!!! about rootkit activity and are asked to fully scan your system...click NO.
  • Now click the Scan button. If you see a rootkit warning window, click OK.
  • When the scan is finished, click the Save... button to save the scan results to your Desktop. Save the file as gmer.log.
  • Click the Copy button and paste the results into your next reply.
  • Exit GMER and be sure to re-enable your anti-virus, Firewall and any other security programs you had disabled.

IMPORTANT! If for some reason GMER refuses to run, try again.
If it still fails, try to UN-check "Devices" in right pane.
If still no joy, try to run it from Safe Mode.

I restored from a backup I had using Macrium Reflect and the same symptoms come up. I think that it might be from using the Alpha trial of Battlefield 3 but I'm not sure. So just in case, here is everything you requested.

I don't see anything malicious there.

Please download GooredFix from one of the locations below and save it to your Desktop
Download Mirror #1
Download Mirror #2
  • Ensure all Firefox windows are closed.
  • To run the tool, double-click it (XP), or right-click and select Run As Administrator (Vista).
  • When prompted to run the scan, click Yes.
  • GooredFix will check for infections, and then a log will appear. Please post the contents of that log in your next reply (it can also be found on your desktop, called GooredFix.txt).

Could it be that I don't remember correctly and the cookie thing was always like that? It seems like the plugin container and firefox memory usage issue is gone. I haven't done anything though.

Cookies will always be created.

Since I don't see anything malicious I'd consider your computer as being clean :)
