Hello,

I am having some issues with my laptop. Everytime I start up my laptop or open any application I get a bad image error message. The message reads: "C:\windows\system32\AVGRSSTX.DLL is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software for support."

This occurs when opening all applications and when opening and closing the laptop. Is it a virus or something?

No virus is coming up on my antivirus scan. I have run spybot search and destroy and that detected no malicious infections. I have run Malwarebytes' anti-malware and nothing has come up. I have installed and run HiJackThis and have included the latest log below. I have tried to run DDS, but I keep getting the bad image error message, which will not go away. I therefore cannot complete the DDS scan. I tried installing and running GMER, but my laptop crashed. I have also uninstalled AVG and reinstalled it, but nothing has changed.

I would really appreciate if someone could analyse my HiJackThis log and advise me as to what I can do to get rid of these error messages. I am worried that my computer is going to crash and I will be unable to repair it!

Thanks

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic an do their best to resolve your issues.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Thanks.

Hi connie23,

You seem to have already resolved the issue by removing AVGRSSTX.DLL from AppInit_DLLs registry isn't it?

Looks updating AVG might work. Before updating remove this file: c:\windows\system32\AVGRSSTX.DLL

Also please see this: http://forums.avg.com/ww-en/avg-free-forum?sec=thread&act=show&id=140853

Hi

I had uninstalled AVG and reinstalled it. I have updated AVG and I now have AVG version 10.0.1204. The warning message has now disappeared. Hopefully I have resolved this issue. Is there anything else I need to do?

Thank you for your help.

The issue is taken care of. :thumbup2:

The only thing you need to do is updating Java to the latest version (6 update 23) and uninstall all the old Java as the older versions of Java are open to exploit by malware.

Do you have any question before we round off?
