Good Morning,

Back in September, I was infected with a trojan from the Alureon family. I believe I resolved the issue, but being the paranoid individual that I am, I want the opinion of an expert. I posted the following topic back in September:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic344760.html/page__p__1915544#entry1915544

Since then, I used TDSKiller to remove the trojan. I went ahead and did a restore of my PC from factory image. It has been running fine, but like I said, I want to make sure nothing unwanted survived. I have run DDS the contents of the DDS.txt are below. I have attached the Attach.txt from the DDS scan also. Unfortunately, GMER continually crashed my PC. I tried running it in normal and safe mode several times, with no success. Based on the reply I received to my September post, I downloaded and ran OTL. The contents of both OTL.txt and Extras.txt are below the DDS.txt contents. Does it look like I am malware free?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Information on A/V control HERE

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit scanner. Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Why we request you disable CD Emulation when receiving Malware Removal Advice

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:

How to create a GMER log

Casey

If I have been helping you and I do not reply within 48hours, feel free to send me a PM.

Thank you, Casey_boy. Please see the DDS log posted below. As I stated in my initial post, GMER WILL NOT RUN on my computer. It comes up, I uncheck the boxes as advised, and start the scan. GMER freezes and nothing on my PC responds other than the mouse pointer. As an alternative, I posted my OTL log in the original post. I would like someone to review these logs and verify I killed my trojan infection. Thanks.

Hi,

My name is Casey and I will be helping you with your malware problems.

As you may have noticed, I am currently in training which means that all of my responses will first be verified by a malware removal coach. As such, there may be a little delay in my responses to you. On the plus side, there will be two sets of eyes looking over your logs.

Whilst I research the problems in your logs, it is very important that you do not make any changes to this PC. Specifically, do not run any further malware removal tools or try to remove anything yourself.

You may wish to "Watch Topic" so that you are immediately informed of any replies I make. I also ask that you reply to my posts within 5 days else your topic will be closed as stale.

Throughout the removal process, if you have any questions then you should ask them. If you are unsure of my instructions or something does not go as planned - then please tell me. Conversely, it is also important that you answer any questions I have and that you keep me updated on the state of the PC.

Regards,

Casey

If I have been helping you and I do not reply within 48hours, feel free to send me a PM.

Thank you, Casey. As I stated in my original post, I know I had a Trojan back in September. I believe I removed the issue using TDSSKiller. To be on the safe side, I restored the factory image that came with my computer. My PC has not behaved suspiciously since, but I want make sure my PC appears clean. I have not been willing to log into anything using a username and password from this PC, but my wife used it to check email and a few other things. This prompted me to consult you professionals in the hopes of getting a clean bill of health for my PC.

Thanks.

Hi,

Your logs look clean, but just to make sure...

:step1: Scan With RKUnHooker
  • Please download Rootkit Unhooker
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  • Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  • Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth, Files, Code Hooks. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  • Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  • Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.
  • Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

N.B. You may get the following warning:

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!
It is recommended to remove parasite, okay?"

Please just ignore it

:step2: We need to create an OTL Report
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the Posted Image icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Push the Posted Image button.
  • Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized

Casey

If I have been helping you and I do not reply within 48hours, feel free to send me a PM.

Hi,

Those logs look fine, there’s just one line which should be fixed – it’s a legitimate program but one which collects user’s data without their knowledge (more info here). However, whilst we’re at it, we’re going to fix a few broken entries and prevent some start up programs to help speed up your PC a little.

:step1: We need to disable Spybot S&D's "TeaTimer"
TeaTimer works by preventing ANY changes to the system. It will attempt to undo any fixes we run, because it blocks these fixes from running.

In order to safeguard your system from problems that can be brought on by a half finished fix, we need to disable TeaTimer. We can reenable it when we're done if you like.
  • Open SpyBot Search and Destroy by going to Start -> All Programs -> Spybot Search and Destroy -> Spybot Search and Destroy.
  • If prompted with a legal dialog, accept the warning.
  • Click Posted Image and then on "Advanced Mode"
    Posted Image
  • You may be presented with a warning dialog. If so, press Posted Image
  • Click on Posted Image
  • Click on Posted Image
  • Uncheck this checkbox:
    Posted Image
  • Close/Exit Spybot Search and Destroy

:step2: We need to backup the registry before we continue.
Registry edits can be potentially dangerous; we can revert to the backup if needed.
Go to Start » Run » type: regedit » OK.
  • On the leftside, click to highlight My Computer at the top.
  • Go up to File » Export
    • Make sure in that window there is a tick next to "All" under Export Branch.
Leave the "Save As Type" as "Registration Files".
      Under "Filename" put RegBackup.
  • Choose to save it to C:\
  • Click save and then go to File » Exit.

:step3: We need to run an OTL Fix
  • Please reopen Posted Image on your desktop.
  • Copy and Paste the following code into the Posted Image textbox.

Elise, Thank you for re-opening this topic.

Casey, here is the OTL Fix Log. I was nervous for a moment. After clicking the Run Fix button I received an illegal memory access error. Clicking Run Fix the second time did the trick. Please let me know what you think of the log. Thanks.

Hi,

Glad to see that you're back :thumbup2:

When you ran the scan, it seems as though you missed out the first line (the :OTL bit). So could you please re-run it again, this time ensuring you copy and paste it all.

Also, how is your PC running?

Casey

Casey,

The PC is running pretty well as far as I can tell. It is an older PC, but I upgraded the memory by 3X not too long ago. It does seem to be touch quicker since the OTL fix, AND speaking of which, here is the OTL fix log:

Hi,

It seems as though it's not worked again. Please make sure you copy all of the code including the :OTL (make sure you include the colon).
