Yeah, I'll definitely try out the long test via that method.

The PC's HDD brand is Western Digital.

I downloaded the DOS version of my HDD manufacturer's diagnostic utility, burned it to CD and ran both the Quick and Extended test on my PC. In both instances, no errors were found, and no warnings or suggestions popped up. Got a clean bill of health, but my PC still won't boot up. What now?

That was a good result.

Now please try to run chkdsk /r again, as you were instructed in the previous post #24, after booting with an XP installation CD, and loading the XP Recovery Console.

Does chkdsk /r run this time?

You said last time "except that no Windows installations were listed, it just went straight to the prompt." Do you see a Windows installation listed? Please describe what you see. If it goes "straight to the prompt" again, please post exactly what is written on the screen for the prompt.

If chkdsk /r does run successfully, attempt to start Windows normally. What happens?

I threw in the XP CD from my Dell again (as many times as I try, I can't even boot to Setup with the XP CD the PC came with because the boot-up keeps coming up with corrupted files that cancel Setup) and ran Recovery Console. It went straight to prompt again. What it basically says is that "This is The Microsoft Windows XP Recovery Console, here you can do etc. and etc.). I ran chkdsk /r again, and got the same message from last time (there appear to be one or more problems in this volume that are unresolvable). I re-booted and no, Windows XP screen & progress bar still don't show up. Unlike last time, HDD mode is still set in ATA mode, not RAID (which is what fixed the issue last time).

When you go to type into the prompt .... what do you see .. ?

For example ...

C:\Windows>_
or
C:\>
or
?

Can you get your hands on a Vista or Windows 7 installation disk? That might be worth a try ... not to install, but to boot from and use the command prompt ... in order to run chkdsk /r.

Please let me know. If not, we will use another tool.

Please try the following:

Download NTBR_CD.exe and create a bootable CD.
  • Save the file to your Desktop and double-click it. This will create a folder named NTBR_CD.
  • Open the folder and locate BurnItCD. Launch it by double-clicking it.
  • When BurnCDCC opens, click Start - the CD tray will open.
  • Insert blank CD and click OK.
  • The tray will close, burn the image then eject the disk.
Run chkdsk.
  • Boot the affected computer with the new CD.
  • Once presented with the boot screen please hit <ENTER> to boot from CD.
  • After a warning screen there is a keyboard language options screen - press <ENTER> to leave it at EN-US.
You should now be at the Tool options screen.
  • Type 5 and press <ENTER> to go to a command prompt.
At the command prompt type the following bolded command then press <ENTER>

    tools\ntfs4dos\chkdsk

You will be prompted (in German) to press Enter.
  • Press <ENTER> to start the check disk utility.
Check Disk will check all attached drives and attempt to correct any errors.
Please make a note of any errors found or corrections made.
  • When it completes type "menu" and press <ENTER> to return to the tools menu.
  • Type 6 and press <ENTER> to quit, then Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart.
Allow the computer to attempt booting normally and let me know the outcome.

Edit: Please let me know if chkdsk reports any errors or corrections made, or if it completes without incident.

In addition to the above installation CD's can you download a Live Linux Distribution and burn it to a CD and see if it boots preferably Ubuntu since that one supports a wide range of Hardware. You can get it here: http://www.ubuntu.com

AustAlien, I burned the program to CD and booted it up to the damaged PC, running the chkdsk. It completed quickly with no incident. Most notably, it said that there were 0 KB in bad sectors. Unfortunately no, the PC still does not boot up, no Windows XP logo screen whatsoever, nothing.

While I have a sleep ... and then work on the next step, have a think about the following possibility:
Since you can't get your hands on (borrow) another Microsoft genuine XP Pro installation disk, would you like to try repairing, or rather recovering, the disk that you have?

The method would use a Linux boot disk to scan and retrieve all the data possible, from the damaged CD, saving it to the hard drive (of your "ancient Dell PC"), where a repair can be attempted before burning it to a new CD. No guarantees, but it might be worth a shot? If it worked, you would be able to attempt a repair install, or do a "clean install" of XP Pro on the Clevo/Sager. Let me know if you are interested and would like more info. (I may have to practise it myself, and then write up the instructions, so it might take a little time before we could get started on that: However, it is possible that I could find a guide on the internet somewhere, that is already prepared.)

Do you have any limit on your ability to download from the internet to a working computer, a Linux distribution amounting to something like 650MB? Would I need to suggest something with a smaller download size?

I'm interested in hearing more about your plan, sure. I should mention that I've tried copying my damaged XP CD to HDD before: manually copying the files (got loads of CRC errors before I gave up) and through nLite (ditto). Honestly the disc doesn't even look that scratched, as I've seen worse. But I guess one deep scratch could ruin everything.

I have a cable connection so downloading large files isn't an issue for me.

That is good to know.

Sorry for neglecting the Clevo/Sager, but I got side-tracked with Linux yesterday.

Have a look at the following link: Rescue Old, Damaged CDs with an Ubuntu Live CD

That is the best guide that I have been able to find, to the whole procedure of rescuing a damaged CD. There are a couple of places where it appears to be inaccurate, so I may need to walk you through those parts with different instructions. It may be a little frustrating at times for you: That is why I am trying to get the procedure "down pat" before we start, so that I can try to avoid any foreseeable difficulties that you may encounter.

I think that we should start a new topic for the "CD rescue" issue: We may be able to get some extra assistance that way too. If you wish to go ahead, and I think it is well worth a shot, please start a new topic in the Linux & Unix forum ... with a title something like "Rescue an XP installation CD with Linux-Ubuntu". Then post a link to it, here in this thread.

Thanks.

Dave

Are you still there?

I have prepared the guide for you to attempt rescuing your XP installation CD, and am ready to proceed.

Instead of the Linux & Unix forum that I suggested previously, your new topic would be more appropriate in the Live Linux sub-forum instead. Please start a new topic there, and let me know.

Thank you.

Edit: I just tried to have another look at the video you posted, but it seems you have removed it already. Any chance of getting another look at it?
