Hello,

Please help if you can smile.gif.

I ran free Avast! version 5.0.677 on my Windows XP desktop computer (Pentium 4, 1.5 Ghz CPU, 1 gb ram), and came up with the following virus warnings. Unfortunately the Avast! software internal tools to remove it are grayed out and not functioning. I tried a couple of things to remove viruses from help online and then realized I was in way over my head. I found this forum and am now requesting help.

Avast! says I am affected with:
JS:Downloader-AT,
Win32:Nimda,
Win32:Small-GWM,
Win32:VB-EIJ,
Win32:WinSpy-CK,
JS:ScriptSH-inf,
and Win32:Virut

Attached a screen shot of Avast! with viruses and partial path to them.

Computer's Symptoms (not sure if these are all due to old slow processor or malware):
Computer is freezing often;
When it is in sleep mode it is turning itself on;
Seems to be downloading stuff often and slowing down;
Monitor is going black forcing reboots often;
Couple weeks back I began getting floating ads that pop up when browsing online;
I get an error message daily that says AdAware has shut down unexpectedly, do I want to send a report? I have been ignoring this, not knowing if it was important, been several weeks.

Ok, I think that is all I can think of to share. Please help if you can. I appreciate it.

Thanks,
Dancer

Before we begin cleaning your machine, I'd like to lay out some guidelines for us to follow while we are working together.
  • I will be assisting you with your malware issues. This may or may not resolve other problems you are having with your computer. If you are still having problems after your machine has been determined clean, I will be glad to direct you to the proper forum for assistance.
  • Even if things appear better, that does not mean we are finished. Please continue to follow my instructions until I give you the all clean. Absence of symptoms does not mean that all the malware has been removed. If a piece of the infection is left, it can regenerate and reinfect your machine.
  • Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
  • I ask that you please refrain from running tools other than those I suggest to you while I am cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so I know what is going on with the machine at any time. If you act independently it will cause changes to your system that I will not be aware of, which will make the process of cleaning the machine a much slower and more difficult process. Additionally, some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.
  • Please perform all steps in the order received. If you are unsure or confused about any instructions I give you, you should ask me to clarify before doing anything. Additionally, if you run into any problems while carrying out instructions, you should STOP and reply back here explaining what happened.
  • After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed. If you need additional time, that is perfectly alright; you just need to let us know beforehand. smile.gif

It is possible that the Virut detection you mentioned is a false positive. The first thing that we'll do is confirm whether virut is present or not. However, before we do anything else, I need to say this: If you do indeed have Virut, then the fight is lost; you will need to format and reinstall. I've seen many, many Virut cases attempt to be cured. . . and once the virus is allowed to propagate it cannot be safely and effectively removed due to Virut's unique characteristics. Period, end of story. Sorry to come out so bleak right at the start but I don't want to give any false hopes of eliminating a Virut infection. Below is some information on Virut.

***************************************************

Virut is a polymorphic file infector with IRCBot functionality which infects .exe, .scr files, downloads more malicious files to your system, and opens a back door that compromises your computer. According to this Norman White Paper Assessment of W32/Virut, some variants can infect the HOSTS file and block access to security related web sites. Virux is an even more complex file infector which can embed an iframe into the body of web-related files and infect script files (.php, .asp, and .html). When Virut creates infected files, it also creates non-functional files that are corrupted beyond repair. In many cases the infected files cannot be disinfected properly by your anti-virus. When disinfection is attempted, the files become corrupted and the system may become irreparable.

QUOTE
The virus has a number of bugs in its code, and as a result it may misinfect a proportion of executable files....some W32/Virut.h infections are corrupted beyond repair.
McAfee Risk Assessment and Overview of W32/Virut

QUOTE
There are bugs in the viral code. When the virus produces infected files, it also creates non-functional files that also contain the virus...Due to the damaged caused to files by virut it's possible to find repaired but corrupted files. They became corrupted by the incorrect writing of the viral code during the process of infection. undetected, corrupted files (possibly still containing part of the viral code) can also be found. this is caused by incorrectly written and non-function viral code present in these files.

Please click this link--> Virustotal

When the VirusTotal page has finished loading, click the browse button and navigate to the files listed below in bold, then click Submit. You will only be able to have one file scanned at a time.

C:\Windows\explorer.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe

Please post back the URL of the results page for each file in your next post.

Hello Blade smile.gif,

Thanks for offering to try and help smile.gif.

Ok, I think I understand, if I have Virut it may be futile. Bummer. Let's hope not... Will read up on Virut, sounds ooger bad...

Summary:
I will pay close attention to detail. I won't do any other fixes. I will perform steps in order.

I am subscribed to this topic. I will continue 'cleaning' until you say stop. I will try and ask questions before I do something if confused. After 5 days of no response from me on this topic you will move on.

Alright then, let's try this and fix this smile.gif. Thanks for the info.

Hello.

Please have VirusTotal reanalyze each file, and post the new URLs in your next post. The MD5s match legitimate versions of those files which is good news, but I still would like to see a clean scan before I rule out Virut.

Hello

Great. Let us, for the moment, proceed as if we're dealing with something other than Virut. smile.gif
  • Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  • Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  • Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
  • Under the "Custom Scans/Fixes" section paste in the below in bold

    netsvc
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start
    eventlog.dll
    scecli.dll
    netlogon.dll
    cngaudit.dll
    sceclt.dll
    ntelogon.dll
    logevent.dll
    iaStor.sys
    nvstor.sys
    atapi.sys
    IdeChnDr.sys
    viasraid.sys
    AGP440.sys
    vaxscsi.sys
    nvatabus.sys
    viamraid.sys
    nvata.sys
    nvgts.sys
    iastorv.sys
    ViPrt.sys
    eNetHook.dll
    ahcix86.sys
    KR10N.sys
    nvstor32.sys
    ahcix86s.sys
    nvrd32.sys
    symmpi.sys
    adp3132.sys
    mv61xx.sys
    /md5stop
    %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
    CREATERESTOREPOINT
    %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
  • Push the button.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and paste them into the body of your next reply.

Great smile.gif. Hopefully Virut doesn't show up anywhere.

Ok, installed and ran OTL. Below is the info you requested.

What does this info tell you? Curious...

Hello.

QUOTE
What does this info tell you?

The information tells me a lot of things. It looks at what is going on in areas of the system commonly modified or infected by malware, it gives me some context so that I can better plan out fixes without, and several other diagnostically relevant pieces of information.

***************************************************

Download Combofix from any of the links below but rename it to renamed.exe before saving it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • VERY IMPORTANT: Disable all running antivirus, antimalware and firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix. Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. NOTE: This list is not all-inclusive. If yours is not listed and you do not know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Double click on renamed.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply

A word of warning: Neither I nor sUBs are responsible for any damage you may have caused your machine by running ComboFix on your own.
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

Blade,

Curious, why would someone get a false positive for Virut? Is that the Virus code writers' plan, to freak people out or...?

I received your PM response to mine, and I am happy to keep the discussion and questions here in this forum. I just sent that one PM originally because I had a computer privacy question.

Shifting...

When I started ComboFix, it kept giving me a warning that AVG Antivirus Free Scanner was running, but AVG has been removed from my computer for a while, so I searched for all leftover AVG files and deleted them and then proceeded. ComboFix didn't mention any other errors as it ran...

Hello.

QUOTE
Curious, why would someone get a false positive for Virut?

Due to Virut's polymorphic nature, the majority of detections are what are known as heuristic detections. This kind of detection is the AV or security program saying that it thinks that there might be an infection because the file is behaving in a suspicious manner. In this case, the detected file was behaving in a manner similar to a Virut infected file. Which is not necessarily bad, but is something that warrants further investigation. Which you did, so good job! thumbup2.gif

1. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as renamed.exe

2. Close any open browsers.

3. VERY IMPORTANT: Disable all running antivirus, antimalware and firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix. Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. NOTE: This list is not all-inclusive. If yours is not listed and you do not know how to disable it, please ask.

Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

"How is the computer running now?"

Hi there,

Computer is running a lot better smile.gif. It is faster, and not freezing, and computer is staying in sleep mode versus waking up, yea smile.gif. I havn't seen any pop-ups when I am online yet.

However, I did notice my computer time clock in the right-hand corner of the monitor, is now set on 24 hr military clock. I right-clicked to adjust the Date/Time and couldn't see any way to switch back to a 12 hour clock? Any ideas on this?

I did notice a couple of things still that occurred today and before we did any fixes, but did not occur yesterday:
Monitor started to go dark, then caught itself, then flickered, like something was trying to shut down the computer or freeze it, but I was just starting ComboFix and it went away, so far. Any ideas?

Also, when I run SpyBot Search & Destroy, and also AdAware (run each separately) it slows my CPU down to 100% as shown in the Task Manager. Sooooo slow sad.gif. Why is this? I thought these were smallish programs? Is it my processor's speed or do I need to reinstall these? This was happening before we started cleaning and is still happening.

I heard from others that SpyBot & AdAware are no longer enough protection from Malware for XP's, is this true? If so, what do you recommend I download and install for this system of mine? Anything? Should I uninstall SpyBot & AdAware?

Were you able to find any viruses? If yes, how many, and what were they?

Blade,

I just ran my Avast AntiVirus to see how things were now, and attached is a screen shot of the results. It says it found 4 instances of the same virus, but it was pointing to software I downloaded prior to having your assistance. Is this a mistaken identity? Or did I unknowingly download a virus when looking for fixes? Gaaaccck, I hope not.

Avast says Virus name is PUP:Win32:Shutdowner-CD[PUP]

Avast moved the 4 items to the Virus chest. Do you recommend any further actions with this? Please advise.

Good news smile.gif, I figured out how to re-set my computer's clock. Under Start/Control Panel/Regional and Language Options/Customize/Time. Yea smile.gif!

So one issue I am still having that concerns me a lot is my monitor is going black while I am doing stuff on my computer (all cables are plugged in I double-checked), and then I am forced to do a hard reboot without being able to close any programs that were open; also sometimes when the monitor goes black it is because my computer is rebooting, all by itself. Gaaaccck. sad.gif

Is this the Virus PUP:Win32:Shutdowner-CD[PUP] that I mentioned in my last post that Avast caught or...? Any ideas?

~Dancer

Hi Dancer.

Let's do a comprehensive scan to check for remaining malware on the machine. Please be aware that this scan will take some time to run.

Please go to the Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.
  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply .

Blade,

Ok, KOS caught something. I am waiting to hear from you before I proceed to clean it or whatever.

See log report.

Also, I may have figured out why my computer was shutting down on me, I had Avast anti-virus set to shut down after scanning, oops smile.gif, so turned that off and will see if that resolves the shutting down thing.

Here is the KOS report:
