Please help if you can .

I ran free Avast! version 5.0.677 on my Windows XP desktop computer (Pentium 4, 1.5 Ghz CPU, 1 gb ram), and came up with the following virus warnings. Unfortunately the Avast! software internal tools to remove it are grayed out and not functioning. I tried a couple of things to remove viruses from help online and then realized I was in way over my head. I found this forum and am now requesting help.

Avast! says I am affected with:
JS:Downloader-AT,
Win32:Nimda,
Win32:Small-GWM,
Win32:VB-EIJ,
Win32:WinSpy-CK,
JS:ScriptSH-inf,
and Win32:Virut

Attached a screen shot of Avast! with viruses and partial path to them.

Computer's Symptoms (not sure if these are all due to old slow processor or malware):
Computer is freezing often;
When it is in sleep mode it is turning itself on;
Seems to be downloading stuff often and slowing down;
Monitor is going black forcing reboots often;
Couple weeks back I began getting floating ads that pop up when browsing online;
I get an error message daily that says AdAware has shut down unexpectedly, do I want to send a report? I have been ignoring this, not knowing if it was important, been several weeks.

Ok, I think that is all I can think of to share. Please help if you can. I appreciate it.

It is possible that the Virut detection you mentioned is a false positive. The first thing that we'll do is confirm whether virut is present or not. However, before we do anything else, I need to say this: If you do indeed have Virut, then the fight is lost; you will need to format and reinstall. I've seen many, many Virut cases attempt to be cured. . . and once the virus is allowed to propagate it cannot be safely and effectively removed due to Virut's unique characteristics. Period, end of story. Sorry to come out so bleak right at the start but I don't want to give any false hopes of eliminating a Virut infection. Below is some information on Virut.

Ok, I think I understand, if I have Virut it may be futile. Bummer. Let's hope not... Will read up on Virut, sounds ooger bad...

Summary:
I will pay close attention to detail. I won't do any other fixes. I will perform steps in order.

Curious, why would someone get a false positive for Virut? Is that the Virus code writers' plan, to freak people out or...?

When I started ComboFix, it kept giving me a warning that AVG Antivirus Free Scanner was running, but AVG has been removed from my computer for a while, so I searched for all leftover AVG files and deleted them and then proceeded. ComboFix didn't mention any other errors as it ran...

Due to Virut's polymorphic nature, the majority of detections are what are known as heuristic detections. This kind of detection is the AV or security program saying that it thinks that there might be an infection because the file is behaving in a suspicious manner. In this case, the detected file was behaving in a manner similar to a Virut infected file. Which is not necessarily bad, but is something that warrants further investigation. Which you did, so good job!


1. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the codebox below into it:



Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as renamed.exe

2. Close any open browsers.

3. VERY IMPORTANT: Disable all running antivirus, antimalware and firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix. Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. NOTE: This list is not all-inclusive. If yours is not listed and you do not know how to disable it, please ask.



Referring to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

How is the computer running now?

Hi there,

Computer is running a lot better . It is faster, and not freezing, and computer is staying in sleep mode versus waking up, yea . I havn't seen any pop-ups when I am online yet.

However, I did notice my computer time clock in the right-hand corner of the monitor, is now set on 24 hr military clock. I right-clicked to adjust the Date/Time and couldn't see any way to switch back to a 12 hour clock? Any ideas on this?

I did notice a couple of things still that occurred today and before we did any fixes, but did not occur yesterday:
Monitor started to go dark, then caught itself, then flickered, like something was trying to shut down the computer or freeze it, but I was just starting ComboFix and it went away, so far. Any ideas?

Also, when I run SpyBot Search & Destroy, and also AdAware (run each separately) it slows my CPU down to 100% as shown in the Task Manager. Sooooo slow . Why is this? I thought these were smallish programs? Is it my processor's speed or do I need to reinstall these? This was happening before we started cleaning and is still happening.

I heard from others that SpyBot & AdAware are no longer enough protection from Malware for XP's, is this true? If so, what do you recommend I download and install for this system of mine? Anything? Should I uninstall SpyBot & AdAware?

Were you able to find any viruses? If yes, how many, and what were they?

I just ran my Avast AntiVirus to see how things were now, and attached is a screen shot of the results. It says it found 4 instances of the same virus, but it was pointing to software I downloaded prior to having your assistance. Is this a mistaken identity? Or did I unknowingly download a virus when looking for fixes? Gaaaccck, I hope not.

Avast says Virus name is PUP:Win32:Shutdowner-CD[PUP]

Avast moved the 4 items to the Virus chest. Do you recommend any further actions with this? Please advise.

Good news , I figured out how to re-set my computer's clock. Under Start/Control Panel/Regional and Language Options/Customize/Time. Yea !

So one issue I am still having that concerns me a lot is my monitor is going black while I am doing stuff on my computer (all cables are plugged in I double-checked), and then I am forced to do a hard reboot without being able to close any programs that were open; also sometimes when the monitor goes black it is because my computer is rebooting, all by itself. Gaaaccck.

Is this the Virus PUP:Win32:Shutdowner-CD[PUP] that I mentioned in my last post that Avast caught or...? Any ideas?

Hi Dancer.

Let's do a comprehensive scan to check for remaining malware on the machine. Please be aware that this scan will take some time to run.

Please go to the Kaspersky website and perform an online antivirus scan.

1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
4. Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
   Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
   Archives
   
5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.

Ok, KOS caught something. I am waiting to hear from you before I proceed to clean it or whatever.

Also, I may have figured out why my computer was shutting down on me, I had Avast anti-virus set to shut down after scanning, oops , so turned that off and will see if that resolves the shutting down thing.
