I believe I have been infected. I have had 2 odd security icons show up in my system tray:

Antivir Desktop

Windows Security Alert

I am running Avira Antivir, but it's not the standard icon. Also, my system is running glacially slow.

So I went through all the preparation steps listed here, running DDS.SCR and gmer.exe. Here are my results, with the attach.txt and ark.txt files as attachments:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

Please include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Please refrain from running tools or applying updates other than those we suggest while we are cleaning up your computer. The reason for this is so we know what is going on with the machine at any time. Some programs can interfere with others and hamper the recovery process.

Even if you have already provided information about your PC, we need a new log to see what has changed since you originally posted your problem.
We need to create an OTL Report
  1. Please download OTL from one of the following mirrors:
  2. Save it to your desktop.
  3. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Click the "Scan All Users" checkbox.
  5. In the custom scan box paste the following:
    CODE
    msconfig
    safebootminimal
    activex
    drivers32
    netsvcs
    %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
    /md5start

    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
    %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /90
  6. Push the button.
  7. Two reports will open, copy and paste them in a reply here:
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt<--Will be minimized

In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see a button called Options. If you click on this in the drop-down menu you can choose Track this topic. I suggest you do this and select Immediate E-Mail notification and click on Proceed. This way you will be advised when we respond to your topic and facilitate the cleaning of your machine.

After 5 days if a topic is not replied to we assume it has been abandoned and it is closed.

regards myrti

Thanks for your help.

Status update: Before my initial post, I had run Avira, and found nothing. After I posted, I downloaded and ran malwarebytes. It did find some virus files, including AVR09.exe, and virus registry entires. I quarantined those. So my system has changed since my initial post. It also is running faster.

But I won't do anything else, and won't use this computer now until you finish helping me.

Here are the results of running OTL.exe:

Hi,

there are a couple of leftovers that need to be removed. I would like you to run a scan with ComboFix next:
Please download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
  • Temporarily disable isable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
Usually this can be done via a right click on the System Tray icon, check this tutorial for disabling the most common security programs: Link

  • Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.
ComboFix SHOULD NOT be used unless requested by a forum helper

If you need help, see this link:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

regards myrti

If I have been helping you and haven't replied in 2 days, feel free to shoot me a PM!
Please don't send help request via PM, unless I am already helping you. Use the forums!

Here's the log.txt from combofix.exe. As it ran, it told me that it was deleting c:\windows\wiaserviv.log . Was that a virus too?

Thanks a gain for your help.

Hi,

yes that is a trace of a previous infection. There is one more file I'd like you to remove:
1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

3. Open notepad and copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into it:

QUOTE
File::
c:\windows\system32\winzvprt5.sys

Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe

Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe

When finished, it shall produce a log for you at C:\ComboFix.txt which I will require in your next reply.

regards myrti

Given that Avira didn't find this stuff. Which Anti-Virus software do you recommend?

Thank you.

Hi,

I personally like Avira quite a lot and it usually has good detections. However no anti virus program will ever be able to detect all malware.

If you are looking for a free alternative (for personal use) I would suggest AVG or Avast: http://free.avg.com/fr-en/homepage or http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download
If you are want to buy one I would suggest either Kaspersky or Eset: www.kaspersky.com/ or www.eset.com

Otherwise your logs are looking good now. How is the PC doing?

regards myrti

It appears to be working well now. Much faster, and no unusual observed behaviour. I really appreciate all of your help.

I am about to ghost the system on to a new upgraded harddrive - it is great to know that I won't be copying any viruses along with it!

Again, thank you very much for all of your help.

Ian

Hi,

please hold off the ghosting for a little longer. First of all I would like to run a check with Eset for leftover malicious files:
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push

As well as update your software:
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Look for "JDK 6 Update 20 (JDK or JRE)"
  • Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Under Required Files, check the box for Windows Offline Installation, click the link below it and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u20-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
-- If using Windows Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
-- If you choose to update via the Java applet in Control Panel, uncheck the option to install the Toolbar unless you want it.
-- The uninstaller incorporated in this release removes previous Updates 10 and above, but does not remove older versions, so they still need to be removed manually.

Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications. To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it, go to Start > Control Panel > Java > Advanced > Miscellaneous and uncheck the box for Java Quick Starter. Click Ok and reboot your computer.

Your Adobe Reader is also out of date. Please uninstall it and download the latest version from Adobe: Download
Please untick all proposed toolbars unless you really want them.

Let me know if you run into any programs with that.

regards myrti

Wow. eSET found some more unwanted files. Here's the scan results:

C:\Documents and Settings\Ian\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{DFF16927-88E6-4EAA-A097-460B7E65289B}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Sent Items.dbx Win32/Mytob.EB worm unable to clean
C:\i386\GTDownDE_87.ocx probably a variant of Win32/Adware.Agent application cleaned by deleting - quarantined
C:\Ian\Public\OE\Sent Items.dbx Win32/Mytob.EB worm unable to clean
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{202550A8-7A33-4BCA-9586-051D24DDBF8F}\RP1\A0000238.ocx probably a variant of Win32/Adware.Agent application cleaned by deleting - quarantined
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\WebEx\424\atpdmod.dll probably a variant of Win32/Genetik trojan cleaned by deleting - quarantined

I manually deleted the Sent Items.dbx file, as it was a 2 year old backed up folder. eSET quarantined everything else.

I removed all 3 Java versions that showed up under installed programs. I then updated with the latest, and the Java site says I am running Java 6 Update 20 now.

I removed Adobe Reader, and installed the latest 9.3 version. After installation, an Adobe icon came up in the system tray saying it needed to do updates. I ran them and rebooted. The reboot was very very slow.

Should I rerun any earlier scans now?

Thank you.

Hi,

how is your PC doing? If you are not noticing any unusual behaviour you should be fine. Your logs were clean, last time we checked.

The computer seems to be back to its regular speed. I have noted no problems lately. I will go ahead and ghost the drive.

Thank you very much for all of your help.

Hi,

k, great. smile.gif The final thing I'd like yo to do is to remove the programs we used. You might want to do that before ghosting.

Please do the following to clean up your PC:
  1. Delete the tools used during the disinfection:
  2. Uninstall ComboFix.exe And all Backups of the files it deleted
    • Click START then RUN
    • Now type Combofix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.
    • Download OTC from the following mirror and save it to your desktop:
    • Double click on
    • Push the large "Cleanup" button.
    • Allow your system to reboot.
  3. If OTC faild to remove all programs from your Desktop, please delete the rest manually.
Please read these advices, in order to prevent reinfecting your PC:
  1. Install and update the following programs regularly:
    • an outbound firewall
A comprehensive tutorial and a list of possible firewalls can be found here.
    • an AntiVirus Software
It is imperative that you update your AntiVirus Software on regular basis. If you do not update your AntiVirus Software then it will not be able to catch the latest threats.
    • an Anti-Spyware program
Malware Byte's Anti Malware is an excellent Anti-Spyware scanner. It's scan times are usually under ten minutes, and has excellent detection and removal rates.
SUPERAntiSpyware is another good scanner with high detection and removal rates.
Both programs are free for non commercial home use but provide a resident and do not nag if you purchase the paid versions.
    • Spyware Blaster
A tutorial for Spywareblaster can be found here. If you wish, the commercial version provides automatic updating.
    • MVPs hosts file
A tutorial for MVPs hosts file can be found here. If you would like automatic updates you might want to take a look at HostMan host file manager. For more information on thehosts file, and what it can do for you, please consult the Tutorial on the Hosts file
  2. Keep Windows (and your other Microsoft software) up to date!
I cannot stress how important this is enough. Often holes are found in Internet Explorer or Windows itself that require patching. Sometimes these holeswill allow an attacker unrestricted access to your computer.
Therefore, please, visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please REBOOT and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install!!
  3. Keep your other software up to date as well
Software does not need to be made by Microsoft to be insecure. You can use the Secunia Online Software occasionally to help you check for out of date software on yourmachine.
  4. Stay up to date!
The MOST IMPORTANT part of any security setup is keeping the software up to date. Malware writers release new variantsevery single day. If your software updates don't keep up, then the malware will always be one step ahead. Not a good thing sad.gif.
