I've had symptoms of an infection off/on for about a month now. Initially Google Chrome wouldn't load any websites even though FF/IE would. However, FF/IE would randomly redirect me to random websites. I was able to get Chrome to work after running Spybot S&D the first couple times, now nothing works. Google Chrome gives me the page unresponsive, kill/wait, notification. Already ran AVG, Malware Doctor, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D and the TDSSkiller, which showed an infection in atapi.sys. Coincidentally, the affected computer won't let me visit this website so I am using another computer to making this post. All logs are from affected computer, of course. Thanks for any advice I can get. I consider myself somewhat computer saavy and I'm at wits end! I'm also having a lot of trouble running GMER. Every time I try to save the file, my computer freezes!

Hi iceman77_7, and welcome to Bleeping Computer.

Outdated system, outdated programs on your machine - this is probably a reason you got infected...

QUOTE
I'm also having a lot of trouble running GMER. Every time I try to save the file, my computer freezes!

Could you possibly post a screenshot of the results of the scan??.. If not, could you at least re-write entries with "suspisious modification" to me?.. ;)

Please do the following:
Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

* Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that.

Thanks for the advice.

The only GMER entry that said suspicious modification was to atapi.sys. in the middle of running it, the computer blue screened and rebooted.

Here's the combofix log:

Hi again iceman77_7!!.. smile.gif.

It looks like your previous run of ComboFix cleaned an infection... You should have not used this tool on your own - it's a very powerful application and can be dangerous if used improperly!!.. Also, you'd save me a little time if you posted that previous ComboFix log in your reply as well...

QUOTE
The only GMER entry that said suspicious modification was to atapi.sys. in the middle of running it, the computer blue screened and rebooted.

As I mentioned above, it looks like the main infection is gone... Gmer should run properly now... Please re-scan with it as instructed and post the logfile...

Additionally:

Please go to http://www.virustotal.com/ , click on Browse, and upload the following file for analysis:

c:\windows\system32\SecurityService.exe

Then click Send File. Allow the file to be uploaded and scanned. Then, please post a link to the results page for me to see.

And:

Open Notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox:

QUOTE
@echo off
sc delete LCNet2
sc delete memNT
sc delete Tdat
del %0

Save this as fix.bat , choose to save as *all files and place it on your Desktop.
It should look like this:
Doubleclick on it - it will run quickly and exit...

Finally,
Please scan your computer with ESET OnlineScan
  1. Hold down Control and click on the following link to open ESET OnlineScan in a new window.
    ESET OnlineScan
  2. Click the button.
  3. For alternate browsers only: (Microsoft Internet Explorer users can skip these steps)
    1. Click on to download the ESET Smart Installer. Save it to your desktop.
    2. Double click on the icon on your desktop.
  4. Check
  5. Click the button.
  6. Accept any security warnings from your browser.
  7. Check
  8. Push the Start button.
  9. ESET will then download updates for itself, install itself, and begin scanning your computer. Please be patient as this can take some time.
  10. When the scan completes, push
  11. Push , and save the file to your desktop using a unique name, such as ESETScan. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
  12. Push the button.
  13. Push

My apologies, I ran Combofix after you told me too, but the Windows System Restore tool wasn't installed the first time, and I saw something about how ComboFix can't do a complete cleaning without the tool so I ran it again immediately afterwards with the tool installed. blush.gif Does the second run log automatically overwrite the first? :-\

Sorry again for running Combofix twice and making things more difficult for you.

Sorry again for running Combofix twice and making things more difficult for you.

No need to apologise!. I should have seen you ran it for the first time only a few minutes earlier, not hours or days... ;)

The previous ComboFix log will be located at: c:\Qoobox\ComboFix2.txt - attach it to your next reply...

Ok, infection should be removed now... I'll need a confirmation with Gmer, though...

Your scan showed one or more infections in your Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE) cache. Delete those by clearing the JRE cache.
To clear the Java Runtime Environment (JRE) cache:
  • Double-click on the file in bold: C:\Program files\Java\jre6\bin\javacpl.exe
    -The Java Control Panel appears.
  • Click Settings under Temporary Internet Files.
-The Temporary Files Settings dialog box appears.
  • Click Delete Files.
-The Delete Temporary Files dialog box appears.
-There are two options on this window to clear the cache.
    • Applications and Applets
    • Trace and Log Files
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files window.
-Note: This deletes all the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the cache.
  • Click OK on Temporary Files Settings window.
  • Close the Java Control Panel

Then, please re-run Gmer as instructed in the Preparation guide (should run smoothly now) - post the logfile in your next reply - I need that log to make sure everything is ok now... smile.gif.

- c:\Qoobox\ComboFix2.txt - attached
- Gmer scan results - posted

Thanks for the quick reply. I've attached the original Combofix log. However, I'm still having trouble running Gmer. I've run it twice now, no other programs running, and it has frozen once and spontaneously rebooted another time. I don't know what's going on with that.

It's strange... Run Gmer again, this time though, with only boxes for Sections and your drive (c:\) checked... Also, tell me if any problem persists (?)...

Whoops! It's attached this time, I promise. Will rerun Gmer after I post this.

Ok, we'll do something else then...

Tell me if you still have any issues with your browsers??.. Also, please go to Start --> Run, type cmd and click Ok...

In the command prompt execute the following commands in bold (write or copy and right-click paste):

mbr -t > c:\logmbr.txt
notepad c:\logmbr.txt

Click Enter after writing every command... Post the contents of c:\logmbr.txt in your next reply...

Then,

- make sure you have the latest, secure version of your Adobe Acrobat installed: Adobe Reader for Windows

- to update Java to the latest, secure version:

Firstly, updated Windows and updated programs... The most important updates were described in my last post (Adobe, Java, etc. ...)... You may also want to scan with Secunia's tool to check for any other outdated programs on your computer - link on my prevention page (snemelk.hekko.pl)...

When it comes to keeping your Windows updated - I suggest you update your Internet Explorer to the latest version - 8.0...
Also, I highly recommend you update to Service Pack 3 - link Should be available via Windows Update or as a manual download/install...

Other tips on my prevention page... smile.gif.

Hard to say... ;) XP is a pretty old system - still useful, though... In Windows Vista and 7 MS added quite a few interesting functions...
If your computer is Windows 7 capable (Is Your PC Ready for Windows 7?), you know you'll be using this computer for a while, and don't mind spending money on a new system, I think installing Windows 7 may be a good idea...
As far as I can remember, XP will be supported until April 8, 2014 - and if you're satisfied with this system, and you know you'll be buying a new computer in 3/4 years or so, upgrading may not be needed...
You choice... smile.gif.

If you want to test Windows 7, here you can download a 90 days trial: Windows 7
And if you have at least 2GB of RAM on your computer, you may even test it in virtual environment, VirtualBox will do...
