Google and some other search engines do not work - but IE does.

Hey everyone. I have a strange one here. The accountant where I work was telling me that her personal home computer got infected with some pretty nasty malware this weekend. She was on the phone for hours with Verizon to no avail really. They did manage to use Malwarebytes and got rid of most of the actual ware itself. However, there are still lingering problems that she is having issues with, which as an IT guy I have never really heard of before.

Everything seems to be working fine except that search engines do not work. She can get TO the pages - like Google.com, yahoo.com, etc. however, when she actually does a search she gets an error and no displays. In fact, when she searches in Yahoo (I think she said) and clicks the search button, it takes her to the google search page.
(I did get her to check to see if a proxy was set with the malware, but it was not).
I have instructed her on the usual things - clearning cache, history, cookies, temp files, etc. None of the normal things helped at all (although Bing works as it should).

So I got her to pull an HJT log and had her send it to me. I am familiar with HJT and am an IT guy - but not so familiar that I can go at this without some advice! As a preface to the log - I noticed right away that there are several "file missing" errors that relate to Google. Additionally, what is up with the HOSTS: IP ADDRESS: google.com, google.de entries, etc.? I have never seen that before. But admittedly it has been years since I had to run one of these. Thanks in advance for any help! (FYI - I am guessing that I do not have to point out that the IP addresses listed are full - I just replaced the last octets with x's for privacy. Thanks.

• Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • DDS.scr
  • DDS.pif
• Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
• A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
• Notepad will open with the results.
• Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
• Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.
