I have a dell desktop(Vostro 200) runnin on XP SP2. When i connect the Ethernet cable the status changes to connected but no packets are received nor sent. The speed is fine as well(100 mbps). When i clicked on the "Support" tab to repair I found that the whole "connection status" area( the one that contains ip address,subnet mask etc.) was empty and when i tried to repair it said "Failed to query TCP/IP settings of the connection. Cannot proceed."

I tried WLAN as well cuz the PC has a built in WLAN card but the same problem existed. I even tried with my Linksys "Compact Wireless-G USB Adapter" but the problem existed . I even tried to connect to my neighbours Router but no change. I scanned with Bitdefender Total Security 2009 but no changes.

The same Ethernet wire connected to another PC through the same Router works fine. PLZ HELP and advise if it is a virus.

I tried to reinstall TCP/IP using the post by "Hublerb" in http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/84764/tcpip-protocol-driver-service-failed-to-start/ but still no help.

I think this can't be solved by anyone as he topics posted 20 mins. after this have been answered but not this one this is realy challeging one
I took a dds test and here is the log:

Hello and welcome to Bleeping Computer

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.

Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review and take the steps necessary with you to get your machine back in working order clean and free of malware.

If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

Thanks and again sorry for the delay.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Title was: Amvokeylogger and Win32.Sality.OG, Help how to remove ~ OB

I am using A dell Vostro 200 running on XP SP2. The computer used to hang alot and "smartvirus remover" from technize.com helped me alot. The virus used to hang my PC and disable task manager. As soon as Smart virus remover was opened it would tell me i have " Amvokeylogger" and the PC would stop being hang and enable the task manager but when it is closed again it is disabled even kaspersky couldnt get anything. So i formatted the C drive (reinstalled the Windows) and not the D. But still the PC is not fixed and now still the problem eixists, "Smartvr" tells me there is keylogger and it has disabled the above and the registry editor and i installed Bitdefender and it said the program is not responding please restart or contact the support. So i ran a manual scan from the start menu and The bleeping Bitdefender deleted every exe file including "Smart VR.exe" and Micrrosft Office 09 and said removed everything except a file infected with Win32.Sality.OG. I have a Dss log before the Bitdefender scan and after so i will post them one after the other.

Log before the scan:

Since your new topic is discussing the same computer even though the specific infection issue has changed, I have merged your new topic with your previous topic. That topic now appears as post 5 in this topic.

An HJT Team member will be with you soon.

Hello. I am PropagandaPanda (Panda or PP for short), and I will be helping you.

Disable Realtime Protection
Antimalware programs can interfere with ComboFix and other tools we need to run. Please temporarily disable all realtime protections you have enabled. Refer to this page, if you are unsure how.

Download and Run ComboFix
Download Combofix by sUBs from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop.
Link 1, Link 2, Link 3
  • Close/disable all anti-virus and anti-malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are not sure how.
  • Double click on ComboFix.exe and follow the prompts. If you are using Windows Vista, right click the icon and select "Run as Administrator". You will not recieve the prompts below if you are not using Windows XP. ComboFix will check to see if you have the Windows Recovery Console installed.
  • If you did not have it installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
    Posted ImagePosted Image

  • When the Recovery Console has been installed, you will see the prompt below. Choose YES.
    Posted Image
  • When finished, ComboFix will produce a report for you. Please post the contents of the log (C:\ComboFix.txt).
Leave your computer alone while ComboFix is running. ComboFix will restart your computer if malware is found; allow it to do so.

Download and Run Scan with GMER
We will use GMER to scan for rootkits.

Please download GMER to your desktop. Note that the file will be randomly named to prevent active malware from stopping the download.
  • Close all other open programs as there is a slight chance your computer will crash.
  • Double click the GMER program ******.exe. Your security programs may detect GMER's driver trying to load. Allow it.
  • You may see a warning saying "GMER has detected rootkit activity". If so, select NO.
  • Leaving the settings at default, click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click Save and save the log onto your desktop.
Please include the log in your next reply.

In your next reply include:
-the ComboFix log
-the GMER scan log

Please also tell me of any changes you have made to your computer since you started your topic.

With Regards,
The Panda

Hello.

Let's finish that off.

Run ComboFix with CFScript
We will run ComboFix again with a script.
  • Close any open browsers.
  • Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. Refer to this page if you are unsure how.
  • Open notepad (Start>Run>"notepad") and copy/paste the text in the box below into it:
    File::
    c:\documents and settings\tazebama.dll

    Folder::
    c:\program files\Smart Virus Remover

    Registry::
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\system]
    "DisableTaskMgr"=-
    "DisableRegistryTools"=-

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\explorer]
    "Hidden"=-

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center]
    "AntiVirusDisableNotify"=-
    "UpdatesDisableNotify"=-
    "AntiVirusOverride"=-
    "FirewallOverride"=-
    "UacDisableNotify"=-

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\security center\Svc]
    "AntiVirusOverride"=-
    "AntiVirusDisableNotify"=-
    "FirewallDisableNotify"=-
    "FirewallOverride"=-
    "UpdatesDisableNotify"=-
    "UacDisableNotify"=-

    Driver::
    DAC970NT

    DirLook::
    c:\windows\system32\vmm32
    Save this as CFScript.txt, in the same location as ComboFix.exe. (This should be your desktop.)
    Posted Image
    Refering to the picture above, drag CFScript into ComboFix.exe.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you at "C:\ComboFix.txt". Post back with that log.

Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Download and run MalwareBytes Anti-Malware
If you already have MBAM installed, simply update and run a quick scan.

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware setup and to your desktop.
alternate download link 1
alternate download link 2

Refer to the steps given here on installing MalwareBytes, running the scan, and saving the log file (not on using File Assasin).
  • If you have trouble updating, try the other mirror download site.
  • Should the computer in question not be able update using the normal method download the update file from here, using another machine if needed. Simply double click the file to install the updates.
  • If MalwareBytes asks to reboot to remove certain items, do so right away.
Please include the scan logfile in your next reply.
Also give me an update on the symptoms.

With Regards,
The Panda

Yeah as u can see in the combofix log my Bitdefender antivirus is enabled and this is its story: I installed bitdefender total security 2009 but didn't work well; and when i restarted the PC it didn't even appear in the taskbar and could only run manual scan and that too was screwed up and used to delete all exe files including games and everything good. I was told by you to run combofix for which i had to disable the firewall of bitdefender but i couldn't as it wasnt there in the taskbar so i uninstalled it and rebooted my PC but still combofix tells me Bitdefender firewall is active . I checked in the C:\Program files for the bitdefender folder but it was deleted, tell me what shall i do as Combofix tells me it will run on my own risk but i still used it. There is another problem at the end of theses logs.

Help me as my registry editor, task manager and etc. are still disabled and comboFix has deleted Smart Virus Remover, the program that fixed these problems for me. I dont want to install it again as i believe it has a virus as combofix removed it.

Hello.

I had thought that Smart Virus Remover was a rogue program. However, after running some tests, I found that it was legit, but its methods are largely ineffective.

Apply Registry Script
  • Copy the following into a notepad (Start>Run>"notepad"). Do not copy the word "code".
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\policies\system]
    "DisableTaskMgr"=-
    "DisableRegistryTools"=-
  • Click File, then Save As... .
  • Click Desktop on the left.
  • Under the Save as type dropdown, select All Files.
  • In the box File Name, input fix.reg
  • Hit OK.
When done properly, the icon should look like Posted Image.

Double click fix.reg and answer Yes to the prompts. You should recieve the message that the entries have been successfully merged. If not, post back with the error message.

Delete fix.reg after use.

Install From Windows Updates
Whenever a security problem in its software is found, Microsoft will create a patch for it. After the patch is installed, attackers can't use the vulnerability to install malicious software on your PC. Keeping up with these patches will help to prevent malware being installed on your computer.

Visit the Microsoft Update Website and follow the on screen instructions to setup Microsoft Update. Also follow the instructions to update your system. Please reboot and repeat this process until there are no more updates to install.

Take a new DDS.txt log after.

With Regards,
The Panda

Okay. Glad you fixed it.

Please take a new DDS run after the update and post back with both logs.

Note: Dont forget that i already tried formatting C drive (not D).
