Lets see if you have any errors in the device manager.
  • Go to Start -> Run.
  • In the Box, type in "devmgmt.msc".
  • Now look in that window, can you find any "?".
  • Please tell me which devices are marked with a yellow "?".
Also, do you know the make / model of your PC, or is it a Custom Built one?

Unless one of the drivers missing is the LAN driver, I would first work on getting current with Updates and service packs

I agree with getting up to date with updates, though I personally would leave Service Pack 3 out unless you do a fresh installation.
I've seen way to many computers stop booting after installing service pack 3.
