Hi everyone....

I need some outside help with this one. I scoured the net for anything on this particular issue, one result in an ask yahoo, which led nowhere.

My firefox homepage has been hijacked by: http://dealhrfind.com/

But, my IE homepage which i never use is fine. I found a couple instances of dealhrfind in the registry, changed them back to yahoo.com, rebooted, is still going to dealhrfind.

Tonight i scanned in safe mode with SpyBot, AdAware, and Malware Bytes anti malware....last nite i scanned with that Mcafee advert stinger ya recommended.
AdAware did pick up a Win32backdoor, cleaned it. Sorry i cant be more specific with that, I thought i had saved a log, but i didnt. Everything is else is coming back clean. I run kaspersky internet security 7, update hourly and scan daily at "hostile environment" settings. All clean with them.

My OS is xp pro SP3.

this is an excerpt from Malware bytes scan on 10-30:

Registry Data Items Infected:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\Start_ShowHelp (Hijack.StartMenu) -> Bad: (0) Good: (1) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

C:\Documents and Settings\basquiat\msiexec.exe (Heuristics.Reserved.Word.Exploit) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.

and here's my HJT log:

Any help is greatly appreciated. I work away from a computer most of the day, but I'll be checking back as soon as I can.

Thanks

Hi,

As far from what I read here - all scans come up clean and the result you are still having is a leftover from the malware you were dealing with.

The reason why you can't change the homepage in Firefox is most probably because the infection you were dealing with previously added a user.js file in your C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USER NAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\randomname directory.
This file is not present by default in Firefox. In most cases, some programs (Firefox extensions), or users, or malware sets it there.
The settings present in user.js override the "normal" settings in Firefox, so whatever you try in Firefox itself, if there's a user.js file present, then it will load what's inside the users.js file anyway.
Read here for more info: http://kb.mozillazine.org/User.js_file

So there are a few things you can choose to do...
* Or you browse to the C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USER NAME\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\randomname directory and search for the user.js file in there. Rightclick the file and select to edit with notepad. There you'll probably find the reference to the bad site in it. You can modify it and set there the url of the site that you want as your startpage.
(This is in case if you actually have created a user.js file with your own modified settings, or another Firefox extension created it)

* Or you rename the user.js file to user.js.bak - then reopen Firefox again, set your startpage and if everything works correctly, you may actually delete that user.js.bak file (since - as I already said, this file is not present by default in Firefox).

Let me know if that solved your issue.

If you're unsure about the user.js file, or can't find it or have any questions, please ask before modifying/deleting anything.
