Problem: When I open IE, I get redirected to pcvirusremover2008.com. I'm also experiencing other redirections in IE.

I run Symantec AntiVirus, Spy-Bot, and AdAware. All are updated and I have run full scans and fixed what they have found. I also ran McAfee Avert Stinger as suggested in your welcome page. Here is my HijackThis log. Please help.

Hi,

I see you are running Teatimer.
I suggest you to disable it because it can interfere with the changes you'll make on your system.
When everything is done and your log is clean again, you can enable it again.
If teatimer gives you a warning afterwards that some changes were made, allow this instead of blocking it.
How to disable TeaTimer <== click me for instructions.
After you disabled Teatimer, download ResetTeaTimer.bat to your desktop. (In case you use Firefox, rightclick the link and choose "save as").
Doubleclick ResetTeaTimer.bat and let it run.
This will only take a few seconds.

Then, * Please visit this webpage for instructions for downloading and running ComboFix:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that, along with a new HijackThis log.

Hi,

Is this a computer at work - computer from work? Because it looks like it. In that case, there are a few things that need attention first before we proceed with this..

* You must inform your Supervisor immediately.

This because of:
  • Most company machines are connected into a network at some time or other, and your infection may compromise the security of that network.
  • If sensitive material is compromised by an infection, your company could be held liable.
* Your Company must give permission for us to give you assistance.

This because of:
  • We are not here to replace your company's IT Department. If there's an IT Department, then they are responsible to deal with this.
  • There may be sensitive material on your computer that your company would not want revealed in an open forum.
Also, since this is a computer used at work - the first thing I always advise is to back up important files you don't want to lose, this since malware causes a system unstable and it may happen that it suddenly won't boot anymore, because of the damage already present.

Then, after you performed above steps,

* Open notepad - don't use any other texteditor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into notepad:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\9tir74tj.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\sdmngr.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ujoihkw.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\atmlibs.dll
Suspect::[8]
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\lmhrqeon.sys
NetSvc::

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\polsumgr]

"AntiVirusOverride"=dword:00000000
[HKLM\~\services\sharedaccess\parameters\firewallpolicy\standardprofile]
"EnableFirewall"=dword:00000001

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

Posted Image

This will start ComboFix again.
Then, please visit this site:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php?channel=8
Where it says: "Browse to the file you want to submit", use the Browse button to navigate to the following file: C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\[8]-Submit_date_time.zip (date_time will be replaced with the date and time when this file was created)
Then click the "Send File" button below in order to upload it.

After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.

Sidenote, this may not clean up the infection yet, because I need to analyse that zipfile first you're going to upload (as posted in my instructions). That's why more steps will be required afterwards to get rid of the infection.

Hi,

The file you submitted is indeed malicious and part of the infection (the protector/loader). So we'll have to create a new CFScript.

* Open notepad - don't use any other texteditor than notepad or the script will fail.
Copy/paste the text in the quotebox below into notepad:

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\lmhrqeon.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\atmlibs.dll
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\ujoihkw.dll
Driver::
lmhrqeon
Registry::
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\~\Browser Helper Objects\{ADE4C7FB-8D70-4EED-8E5B-E8AD40B754B1}]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\winlogon\notify\ysplltxi]

Save this as txtfile CFScript

Then drag the CFScript into ComboFix.exe as you see in the screenshot below.

Posted Image

This will start ComboFix again. After reboot, (in case it asks to reboot), post the contents of Combofix.txt in your next reply together with a new HijackThislog.

Hi,

This is much better and it appears that the active infection is gone now. However, just to be sure, I want you to reboot your computer and post a new HijackThislog afterwards (newly created after reboot). BUT BEFORE you do, we need to restore a legitimate file Combofix previously quarantined (I overlooked that part in your first Combofixlog).
We can restore it with a script, but actually, that's not really needed since we can restore it manually as well.

So, browse to the following file:

C:\Qoobox\quarantine\C\Windows\system32\nvsvc32.exe.vir

Rename the nvsvc32.exe.vir file back to nvsvc32.exe by right clicking on it and selecting Rename. Then copy that file back to your C:\Windows\System32 folder. Let me know if you are able to do this successfully.

Then reboot and post a new HijackThislog in your next reply.

I restored the nvsvc32.exe file to the system32 folder and here is the HiJackThis log after a reboot.

Hi,

This log looks clean again. :thumbsup:

Your version of Java is outdated and needs to be updated to take advantage of fixes that have eliminated security vulnerabilities.
Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 10".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • For Platform, select "Windows"
  • For language, select your language
  • Read the License agreement and then Check the box that says: "I agree to the Java SE Runtime Environment 6 License Agreement".
  • Click Continue
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
    - Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
    • Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2
    • J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0
    • Java™ 6 Update 5
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u10-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.
Then, * Go to start > run and copy and paste next command in the field:

ComboFix /u

Make sure there's a space between Combofix and /
Then hit enter.

This will uninstall Combofix, delete its related folders and files, reset your clock settings, hide file extensions, hide the system/hidden files and resets System Restore again.

Let me know in your next reply how things are now.

Yes, you may enable Teatimer again? :thumbsup:

Glad I could help. :)

Please read my Prevention page with lots of info and tips how to prevent this in the future.
And if you want to improve speed/system performance after malware removal, take a look here.
Extra note: Make sure your programs are up to date - because older versions may contain Security Leaks. To find out what programs need to be updated, please run the Secunia Software Inspector Scan.

Happy Surfing again!
