Hello,

I have NOD32 antivirus on my computer. I did a scan today and it came up with an infected file, saying I might have the Win32 Trojan on my computer. It recommended to delete the file, so I did so. Then, I did another scan a couple hours later and it found another file, which it cleaned. Because it found the second file, I'm not sure that it deleted the Trojan. Also, yesterday when I shut down my computer, I received an error message that spybot was unable to close and it brought up the "end now" or "cancel" window. There was also something about a tea time.exe file. This was the first time that happened. Also, many times when I shut down my computer, I get an error message that iexplore.exe could not close (same as the one I got for spybot). I just click end and then my computer finishes shutting down. Does this mean something is wrong? Would you please check if I have a trojan or some other spyware/virus/etc. on my computer?

Thanks for your help!

Below are the DSS and Kaspersky Reports.

Hello, AshS.
 to BleepingComputer.com

My name is Billy O'Neal and I will be helping you. (Billy or Bill is fine, if you like.)
Please give me some time to look over your computer's log(s).
Please take note of the following:
  • In the meantime, please refrain from making any changes to your computer.
  • Also, even if things appear to be running better, there is no guarantee that everything is finished. Please continue to check this forum post in order to ensure we get your system completely clean. We do not want to clean you part-way up, only to have the system re-infect itself. :)
  • If you do not understand any step(s) provided, please do not hesitate to ask before continuing. I would much rather clarify instructions or explain them differently than have something important broken.
  • Finally, please reply using the Posted Image button in the lower left hand corner of your screen.
Please run Deckard's System Scanner again, this time using these instructions:
(In the event you lost your copy, you can download a new one from here: Deckard's System Scanner)
  • Click on Start, click on Run
  • Copy and paste the following in the open window and then click OK:
    "%userprofile%\desktop\dss.exe" /config
  • This will open up DSS configuration
  • Click on Check All.
  • Click Scan.
    DSS will now run again.
  • Please post back both logs that open in notepad.
    Main.txt and Extra.txt

Hello, AshS.
As far as I can tell, those logs are clean. Are you still experiencing problems?

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Java Runtime Environment (JRE)6 Update 7...allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Select your Platform: "Windows".
  • Select your Language: "Multi-Language".
  • Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • Click Continue and the page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation and save the file to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe
  • Follow the on screen instructions to install the latest Java version.
In your next reply, please include the following:
  • A new DSS Main.txt

Hi Billy,

Thanks! I did the things you suggested. I don't think my computer has any more problems, but it is running quite slow (it didn't used to) and it is using up a lot of memory, as you will see from the logs posted before.

Here is the Main.txt log:

Hello, AshS

I don't see any malware in those logs. Are you still experiencing problems?

Hi Billy,

Thanks for looking things over! I guess everything is fine, then. NOD32 hasn't found any viruses or trojans recently. My computer does seem to download things without my knowledge, though (I hear the beep, indicating it's completed, but the window doesn't stay up long enough for me to see what is happening). Is that normal?

That "beep" is used by several programs to indicate completion.. not just Internet Exploder.

Do you have any other questions?

Yes, a couple...

In the logs, it says that I have 447mb of RAM, but my computer is supposed to have 512mb. Is there something I can do to increase it to what it is supposed to be? Also, I thought I had additional RAM put in my computer a year or two ago, to bring it up to 1GB (though I could be remembering incorrectly). If the RAM were there, would it show up on the log, or does it just go by what the computer originally came with?

Finally, are there any programs that are running all the time which are unnecessary and might speed things up?

Thanks for all of your help, Billy!

Hello, AshS

My guess is that your system is using all 512MB of ram. If your system has an internal graphics card (that is, on the motherboard itself) which most do, it uses some of the main system ram for graphics functions. That could explain where the "phantom" ~32MB is. So while the main RAM is 512MB, the ram usable by the processor is slightly less.

As far as the upgrade goes, one of the modules may not be seated correctly but there's nothing software-side that can be done about that. It's a physical problem with the machine that's a little difficult to fix through the internet . RAM measured by DSS is actual ram for the running system, not what it was shipped with.

As for the slowness, a good tool for disabling un-needed programs is called "StartUpLite", which you can download from here:
http://www.malwarebytes.org/startuplite.php

Further, if you are having a slow computer, this topic:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/87058/slow-computerbrowser-check-here-first;-it-may-not-be-malware/
by QM7 details methods of speeding the machine in general.

Anything else?

Hope that helps,
Billy3

Hi Billy,

You've answered everything - thank you very much! Good luck with getting into college! (I think I read somewhere that that's your goal...?) Thanks for making sure my computer is safe.

Hi Billy,

Sorry, I do have one more question - I just ran the Malwarebytes program that you recommended and it suggests disabling the Sun Java Update Scheduler. I am wondering why this did not automatically update the Java version that I had on my computer, if it was running. I may not remember to do that manually unless I can't see something, so is there a way to schedule updates or reminders to avoid my computer being vulnerable? How often do they come up with updates?

Thanks!

The Malware Byte's program is really simply a lister of optional startup items. These items are _not_ malware. They are just non needed garbage that starts with windows. Most of the time you won't want to remove them all. On the other hand, you can always check for the latest versions of Java from this link:

http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp

Updates to the Java runtime very greatly in release times. Last update (to update 7) was approx 6 weeks after update 6, but update 6 was only 2 after update 5... (this is from memmory... may be off a little...).

The "Scrunia Software Inspector" I pointed you to earlier will tell you if you have outdated Java, allong with a ton of other programs, and it's a good idea to run that once a month

Hope that helps,
