Problem:

I use mozilla firefox and new tabs will just pop up randomly. Also, the browser will often stop working such as when I type a website, e.g. facebook or myspace, and hit enter, it will not go there until I close out of all firefox windows completely and start it again. But when I close the firefox browser, the process firefox.exe still does not close so I have to go to task manager to end the process manually in order to start firefox again to browse the internet. The above problem happens quite often...every 15 minutes as it seems like.

When mozilla often does not work, I would use internet explorer and this is much worse than mozilla. When I open up IE, 3 or 4 windows pop up and even though my antivirus software (Trend Micro) stops the page from loading, the pop ups still keep coming.

Hello Damien Jay,

Your Trend Micro Internet Security Pro v16.10.1079 is Outdated.

You need to install an antivirus program as soon as you can and run a complete scan of the computer.

I recommend you download the free

Avast or
AntiVir or
AVG antivirus

Products from all three vendors received the Virus Bulletin's VB100% award and certification for virus detection from ICSA Labs.

Never install more than one antivirus scanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give you problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!

**********************

If you delete items that Hijackthis shows, without knowing what they are, it can lead to other problems such as your Internet no longer working or problems with running Windows itself.
If you are do not have advanced knowledge about computers you should NOT fix entries using HijackThis without consulting an expert on using this program.

You have deleted many valid items. :) If you dont know what you doing then do not delete anything with Hijackthis!

Restore everything you've removed and we'll take it from there.

Open HijackThis
Click Open the Misc. Tools Sections button> Config screen> Backups Button
Place a check in all backed up entries and click Restore.

Reboot the computer.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note)
The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.

Copy and Paste the entire Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware report in your next reply along with a fresh DSS Main.txt log.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediatly.

Hi Damien Jay,

You have some suspicious files we need to check.

You will need to see hidden files, so follow these directions:
How to show hidden files in Windows Vista

Go to My Computer and double-click C.
Go to the Tools menu and select 'Folder Options'.
On the 'View' tab select 'show hidden files and folders',
deselect (uncheck) 'hide protected operating system files (recommended)', and
deselect (uncheck) "Hide extensions for known file types.'

Go to next site: http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
On top you'll find 'Browse'
Click the browse button and browse to next file:

C:\Windows\DCEBoot.exe

Click open.
Then click the 'Send' button next to it.
This will scan the file. Please be patient.
Save the results in notepad.

Perform the same for next files:

C:\Windows\system32\drivers\StarOpen.sys

Once scanned, copy and paste the results also in your next reply.

NOTE: I usually enter my email address at virus total so they can send me the scan results. They usually only take a couple minutes to reply.
You can copy/paste the results of scan results here.

*******************************

Before running a new scan let's clean out the temporary folders.

Download ATF Cleaner to your Desktop.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
  • Click Select All found at the bottom of the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser, do this also:
  • Click Firefox at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser, do this also:
  • Click Opera at the top and choose Select All from the list.
  • Close ALL Internet browsers (very important).
  • Click the Empty Selected button.
  • NOTE : If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Now download OTScanIt.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTScanIt on your desktop.

Note: You must be logged on to the system with an account that has Administrator privileges to run this program.
  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Open the OTScanIt folder and double-click on OTScanIt.exe to start the program (if you are running on Vista then right-click the program and choose Run as Administrator).
  • In the Drivers section click on Non-Microsoft.
  • Under Additional Scans click the checkboxes in front of the following items to select them:
    • Reg - BotCheck

      File - Additional Folder Scans

  • Do not change any other settings.
  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.

Hi Damien Jay,

I see Viewpoint installed.
Viewpoint Manager is considered as foistware instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".

This will change from what we know in 2006 read this article: http://www.clickz.com/news/article.php/3561546

I suggest you remove the program now, if you did not install it.

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present.

Viewpoint
Viewpoint Manager
Viewpoint Media Player

If you uninstalled, please navigate to and delete the following folders
C:\Program Files\Viewpoint

***************************
Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Sun Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 6.
  • Scroll down to where it says "Sun Java Runtime Environment 6 Update 6".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language jre-6u6-windows-i586.exe and save to your desktop.

  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
Examples of older versions in Add or Remove Programs:
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2

  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u6-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.

Step #1

Please download The Avenger by Swandog46 to your Desktop.
  • Click on Avenger.zip to open the file
  • Extract avenger.exe to your desktop
Copy all the text contained in the code box below to your Clipboard by highlighting it and pressing (Ctrl+C):

Files to delete:
%allusersprofile%\bm75ae7192.xml
%systemroot%\dceboot.exe
c:\users\dr. pho\appdata\local\temp\er76qi2i.exe
c:\users\dr. pho\appdata\local\temp\krqqycdd.ini2

Note: the above code was created specifically for this user.  If you are not this user, do NOT follow these directions as they could damage the workings of your system.

Now, start The Avenger program by clicking on its icon on your desktop.
  • Click in the window labeled Input Script Here  and paste the text copied to the clipboard into it by pressing (Ctrl+V).
  • Click the Execute button
  • Answer "Yes" twice when prompted.
The Avenger will automatically do the following:
  • It will Restart your computer. ( In cases where the code to execute contains "Drivers to Unload", The Avenger will actually restart your system twice.)
  • On reboot, it will briefly open a black command window on your desktop, this is normal.
  • After the restart, it creates a log file that should open with the results of Avenger’s actions.  This log file will be located at  C:\avenger.txt
  • The Avenger will also have backed up all the files, etc., that you asked it to delete, and will have zipped them and moved the zip archives to C:\avenger\backup.zip.
Step #2

Start OTScanIt. Copy/Paste the information in the codebox below into the pane where it says "Paste fix here" and then click the Run Fix button.

OTScanIt Scan Log is attached

Also, as instructed, I used IE to surf to F-Secure and attempted to do the scan. After I installed the ActiveX and clicked on Accept, I get the message "An error has occured! Please close the scanner and your browser, then try again. (Id: 26)"

Even having closed out of all IE windows and then rebooting my computer a couple of times I still get this message.

Hi Damien Jay,

We will try a different scanner.

Please perform this online scan: Kaspersky Webscan

Note that you need to run this scan with Internet Explorer for it to work correctly.

If you have any problem running the scan to completion, disable your Antivirus and/or firewall temporarily, just refrain from surfing around while the scan is running and be sure to re-enable when done.

Note for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the accept button of the license, click on the Zoom tool located at the right bottom of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license is accepted, reset to 100%.

1. Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"
2. A dialogue box will appear asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
NOTE: If you are running XP SP2, you may need to click on the Information Bar to allow the ActiveX to install and may need to repeat step 1.
3. Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows Kaspersky to run.
4. If running MSAS beta you may receive an alert that an IE ActiveX program requires your approval. Click "Allow"
5. Wait for the scanner to initialize and update its databases. When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
6. Click "Scan Settings" and check the option to use the EXTENDED DATABASE,
Scan Options:
Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

then click "OK"
7. Select a target to scan: Click on "My Computer" and the scan will begin.
8. Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Now click on the Save Report As... button:

Posted Image

Under Save as type select Text file write name for the file and save it to your Desktop.
Locate the file at the Desktop, open it, then copy and paste that information in your next post.
9. Post the Kaspersky scan results in your next reply.

Once again there is a problem:

After clicking on accept, Kaspersky initialized and downloaded the activeX fine but when it was updating the anti-virus database, it halted as it was downloading the remote file: master.xml. I get a pop up that reads:

Update process FAILED. No further anivirus actions can be performed!

Attention, you must be online to activate Kaspersky Online Scanner, since the latest Anti-Virus bases version must be downloaded prior to scan. Otherwise we cannot guarantee detection of latest viruses. [21]

Sounds like Kaspersky was busy, you got only a partial file so it gave you an error message. Try downloading it later and see if it works.
Millions of people use that scanner, so it is very busy.

BTW, you must use IE to download it - NOT FireFox.

Hi,

I've tried Kapersky over a dozen times (everyone of them on IE) even uninstalling it from the control panel manually after it failed and also waited at an hour or two hours interval to try it again and every time I get the same error message. Any suggestions?

Kaspersky has another site we can try.

Please do a scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.
  • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition files.
  • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer
  • This will start the program and scan your system.
  • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run.
  • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report
  • Now, click on the Save Report as button.
  • Save the file to your desktop.
  • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Hi Damien Jay,

Please download the
OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
(if you are running on Vista then right-click the program and choose Run as Administrator).
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\Users\Dr. Pho\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\WER\ReportArchive\Report0c75b460\Report.cab
  • Return to OTMoveIt2, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Copy everything on the Results window to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy), and paste it on your next reply along with a fresh Hijackthis log.
  • Note : If a reboot was necessary or you needed to Exit before posting the log, you will find a copy of the log at the root of the drive where OTMoveIt is installed, usually at :
    C:\_OTMoveIt2\MovedFiles\********_******.log
    (where "********_******" is the "date_time")
  • Close OTMoveIt2
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Caution: Be careful of what you copy and paste with this tool. OTMoveIt2 is a powerful program, designed to move highly persistent files and folders. Not following the directions as instructed or using incorrectly could lead to disastrous problems with your operating system.
