Although AOE 3 is supposed to be for Windows XP only, I have found that it is possible to install and run the game on W2000 Pro if you run the setup from the DOS window. I have installed and run AOE 3 and the first expansion (AOE3x.exe) this way.
My son received the Asian Dynasties expansion (AOE3y.exe) for Christmas. I installed it from DOS, started the game and received an error message involving the iphlpapi.dll file. For kicks, I swapped the Windows XP iphlpapi.dll for the Windows 2000 version--lo and behold the game ran perfectly, but my internet browser would no longer recognize my internet connection. Swap them back and I received the error message on the game and a running browser.
I really prefer running W2000 and do not feel like "upgrading" to XP just to run this expansion pack. Can anyone think of any work-arounds for this problem? My son would greatly appreciate it!
