Usb - Problem Devices

How can I get my PC to recognise any pendrives or similar
The only one I ever have any success with is a Sandisk one
I've been trying to solve this for months & Googled etc
& now urgently need to get it to recognise a friend's R4

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE could someone help me out !!!!!!!!
(My expertise isn't very brilliant)


There are 4 USB ports on my PC
1 used for internet
1 used for Canon printer
2 used for pen drives (supposedly)

My Computer - Properties shows 2 errors
1) Hard Disk controllers USB Mass Storage Device
General: code 10
Driver: 2 drivers shown
1. Usbmsd.pdr in windows\system\iosubsysProvidor etc is unknown
2. ios.vxd in windows\ system\vmm32Providor - Microsoft Co

2) USB controllers - Unknown device
General: code 10
Driver: driver info button disabled

Under Device Usage for both errors
'disable in this hardware profile' and 'exists in all hardware profiles ' boxes are unchecked

You need to redownload the USB drivers for your computer. What is the make and model? This is the 98 forum. Are you using 98 or XP?

Yes, I'm using Win 98SE (in this instance)

The Computer (built by local company) is:
AuthenticAMD AMD Sempron™ 2500+ if that tells you enough.....


The drivers to redownload - are they on the WinSE disk or do I get them from the Internet
How will I identify which ones?
Where do I install them to?

the USB drivers should be included with the motherboard drivers. Since this is a custom build you need to know the make and model of the motherboard. Download SIW. It will give you that information

Oh dear, I've downloaded it..... but what now...
I tried clicking on the USB 20 application & it tells me
cannot find hardware
Sis USB 2.0 host controller is not available or function disabled
