Howdy,

I have been checking for updates the last couple of days and this screen comes up showing an error.




I am wondering if Ad-Aware SE is still being supported now that the 2007 version has been released.

I have been hesitant to download the new version after reading comments on this site about it being a resource hog.

Is anyone else running into this same problem while trying to update Ad-Aware SE ?

I haven't been having any problems.
I tried when I read this post, and was able to update without any problems.

I've had the same problem, before.
Trying at another time usually helps.
If it still won't update, try one of these:

Close Ad-aware.
Go to C: \ Program Files \ Lavasoft \ Ad-Aware SE Personal \ defs.ref
Delete defs.ref
Open Ad-aware, and try to update.

If that doesn't work, another way would be to download the definitions file, and install them manually.

Close Ad-aware.
Delete the defs.ref file (C: \ Program Files \ Lavasoft \ Ad-Aware SE Personal \ defs.ref)
Download the latest definitions file, in a ZIP file, from (This is a direct download):
http://download.lavasoft.com/public/defs.zip
Save the file to a temporary location.
When the download is complete, unzip the contents of the file to the installation directory of Ad-aware (Default Location: C:\Program Files\Lavasoft\Ad-Aware SE Personal)
Reboot.
Open Ad-aware, and confirm the success of the update.

Well I have tried numerous times and I get the same error message.

tg1911 how do I get to the program file to delete: Delete defs.ref

Double-click My Computer
Double-click C:
Double-click Program Files folder
Double-click Lavasoft folder
Double-click Ad-Aware SE Personal folder
Left-click, to highlight the defs.ref file
Right-click, and select Delete

Howdy tg1911,

I followed your instructions. This is a screen shot.




I scrolled down and attempted to take another screen shot to include all the folders not seen but was only able to take the same as the above shot.


No sign of Lavasoft ???

Perhaps I should just remove the SE program and download Ad-Aware 2007. ??

In the mean time, do you see anything I should get rid of? I have no idea what half those the files/folders are.

I suppose this is for another thread but here is an example of what I am talking about.

I opened a folder and this is what came up.

EDIT: I went back and tried again. I found the file. I deleted the defs. I tried to update and I am still getting the original error. I just tried the zip file method but I am apparently doing something wrong. Installation directory ??

what ever you do, dont use adaware 2007 adwatch, it will slow your PC down like nothing you have ever seen, its junk, just use the app to scan your PC once a week thats all, just a quick advice for those who use adaware 2007

Download the file again, since a new update just came out today.

Make sure Ad-aware, is not running.

Unzip the file:
Right-click the zipped folder, and select Extract All....
Click Next, and then Next, again.

Now, you should have a folder named defs, visible.
Double-click the defs folder, to open it.
In there, you should see a file named defs.ref
Right-click that file, and select Copy.

Double-click My Computer
Double-click C:
Double-click Program Files folder.
Double-click the Lavasoft folder.
Double-click the Ad-Aware SE Personal folder.

In an empty space, right-click and select Paste.
Close out the folder.
Start Ad-aware, and see if the latest definitions, SE1R178 29.06.2007, are showing.

Well I gave it a shot. Still no luck.

I have checked for updates almost daily for the last 2 years or so and have downloaded them religiously.

Why this program has acted up recently is certainly a mystery to me.

I think I will remove it and download the 2007 version and use it for a on demand scanner.

If you don't want to install the newer version of Ad-aware, you can still get the older version, here:
Ad-Aware SE

You're version may have become corrupt, somehow.
A reinstall of a fresh copy, ofthe older version, might solve your problem.

Well the plot thickens. I removed the the original and downloaded it again from the site you provided.

It is the same version as the one in the screen shot above. When I opened it I got a pop up screen saying that my definitions were 767 days old and asked if I wanted to update.

I clicked yes and I get the same error screen as I originally posted.


Something that I noticed ( which may not be significant) is that Spy-Bot S&D did not send up a pop up screen warning me of a change in registry. ?? Usually if I download something SpyBot will give me a deny or allow screen.



I checked my start up using Start Up Inspector and it is not listed there. ( Not sure if it suppose to be)

I checked my program files and it is there.



I disabled my pop up blockers, disabled my anti-virus and set my firewall settings to low and tried it again. No luck.

Probably pulled it out after dealing with folks like me (computer dumb) over time.
