I need to reformat my HD because I am giving my computer to a relative and want to get all of my old files and misc. off of it before I turn it over. It also has been giving me problems freezing up, going slow, etc, and cleaning the drive will fix that.

Is there a tutorial on how to reformat ME? I have called Gateway for assistance in the past, but would like to do it myself this time if I can get instructions. Can someone point me in the right direction?

If it is a Gateway it should have come with a restoration cd and others.
Do you have them?

Yes, I have all of the discs that came with it. But I am not sure how to use them.

I reformatted my HD and everything went well except that I cannot get my display to go to 32 bit colors. I have tried to move the slide to change the resolution but it won't budge off the lowsest level. I have a trident blade graphics card.
Any suggestions?

The best way would be to download the display driver from gateway's web site. If you put in your machine serial number, it will find all the correct drivers for your machine.

1. Open the Display Properties dialog and select the Settings tab.

2. Press the Advanced button.

3. Select the Adapter tab.

4. Press the List all modes button.

5. Select the resolution, color depth, and refresh rate.

6. Press OK.

Thank you for the replies. I did the Display Properties route and the Adapter tab screen did not give me a tab for Modes. There was no tab there to change any settings.

I will now try to get the drivers from Gateway, however, I had to get them to change my graphics card about two years after I bought the system, so I don't know if that will work either because they sent me a different card than the one that came with the system. Oh well, I will just keep trying.

since you are running windows 98se(?) or me

you will have to dig up the paperwork from gateway showing the new card or even power down the computer and see if you can read something on the card to identify it

then the driver will be easy to find

what happened to the driver cd they sent you?

If gateway changed the video card, the web site should be updated with the new video card information. the serial number is on the back of the machine and normally starts with 00
