I just ran hdtune, and it said that this is how both my sata 2 hard drives are running:

Standard : ATA/ATAPI-7 - SATA II
Supported mode : UDMA Mode 6 (Ultra ATA/133)
Current mode : UDMA Mode 5 (Ultra ATA/100)

Why would my sata drives be running at ultra ata 100? And how can I change it? I looked through the bios but didn't find anything useful.

Have you checked where your cables 1)plug into the mobo 2)plug into the HDDs

What do ya mean? Sata cables are keyed, and can go in only one way and the sides can do to either mobo or the hard drive. . .It can't be the cables. Any other ideas?

probably some funky drivers from an oem running them in pata emulation mode

Alright, so exactly what drivers would I get then? On the gigabyte site they only have the sata raid drivers. . .Everest says that the driver is provided by microsoft and is of 2001:

does device manager list a scuzzi raid controller or just ide ones?

is your computer an oem?

even the funky emulation drivers just usually fool windows about dma, shouldn't affect sustained transfers, which is what is important

Looking over the bios a second time, I've got a few options if I remember correctly. I can run the sata as IDE, something else (don't remember what), or RAID. As of now it's on ide/ata.

Isn't that the jmicron controller, gigabyte really hosed those drivers and it's caused a lot of problems with atapi devices in the
burning forum I moderate. Why are you using that controller?

FWIW - HP uses SATA drives in some of their laptops in an IDE type mode. Haven't quite figgered out how they do it, but it does complicate things immensely.

Should I use a different driver off of the gigabyte site? I've never really dealt with this kind of stuff before.

usually people use the sata for the main southbridge chipset and then play hell getting their ide/pata dvd burner to work right?

we solved a few of those problems with the new jmicron drivers but that was a different scenario from yours?

Yeah my dvd burner (only have one ata slot) works fine, it's the sata stuff that is funky. . .

the jmicron supports raid, the ICH8 supports serial, adjust bios accordingly and move the sata drives to sata II 0 and 1

Alright, which is the sata 0 and 1? I assume it is the odd colored ones (colorblind, so I can't really tell if it's like purple or something). Right now they are plugged into the two furthest right in that picture.

Well I took the plunge and replugged the drives into the purple connectors, everything looks dandy now. Thanks for all the help!

One weird thing, when I rebooted, the bios changed my cpu clock multiplier to x6 instead of x7, reducing my clock speed from 1.86 to 1.60. I just changed it back and everything is NOW dandy. Don't think I broke anything. XD

much as I am an AMD man, Intel really does the best job with sata, dropping ide support is kind of sloppy
