As far as I can tell, NetBSD will be fairly similar to Gentoo. For me, it is the package manager that makes, or breaks a distribution. Same goes for any variant of *Nix.
pkgsrc is the NetBSD package manager, and it like Gentoo's package manager, it fetches, and compiles programs from source.
http://www.netbsd.org/Documentation/pkgsrc...html#why-pkgsrcNetBSD supports KDE 3.5.7, and Gnome 2.18. Hardware support is not as good as a Linux distribution, and many common Linux apps are not BSD compatible, but often have an alternative. Such as the Project Evil/NDISulator program, instead of NDISwrapper.
Other than that, they should be very similar. After all, Linux was designed to be a BSD/Unix system.
