OK, I want to build me a powerful gaming computer to play all the latest games.

I want to know what people think.

AMD or Intel?

Dual Core?

64-bit?

Right now, the intel core duo or core extreme. Tomorrow? Next week? I dont know. When amds' quad with the new(?) K10 is released. Maybe amd again. I just wait until real results can be had from third parties, not amd or intel.

I have always always heard AMD for gaming, but the new Intel core 2 duo extreme is on top of the cake at the moment. But like Oldf@rt said that could change.

Yep, the current crop of Intel's Core 2 Duo's, especially the high end ones, lead the pack.

Today.

Tomorrow? It could change, and probably will.

Thanks guys, I was going to grab the latest Intel but am not sure because it might be beaten by AMD as they normally do .

AMD won't have their "alleged" Intel Core 2 killer out until Christmas.

Here's a recent ZDNet article discussing the upcomming AMD's - AMD goes quad-core with Phenom.

So, if you can wait until then, you'll have the fastest chip - supposedly.

But, wait, ... if you can wait until 08, Intel's even faster ones will be out.

Why get that, though, when AMDs even faster will not be far behind?




Hmmm... I'm detecting a pattern here.

Also, the latest games, today, will be yesterday's games by then.

I'm thinkin' if you go with a Intel Extreme CPU today, at least you'll be able to play these games over the next few years, while waiting for even faster CPUs to come out.

Either that, or join the "Paralysis of Analysis Club", and don't get anything.

Generally I recommend buying the best that you can afford right now - or waiting for a while until the prices come down. I like to buy stuff that's one or two steps below "state of the art" as it's cheaper and has had a bit of time to have the bugs worked out. Also tends to make my systems more stable when running Beta software.

In a competitive marketplace there'll always be struggles to achieve dominance (just what AMD and Intel are doing) - there'll be "one-upmanship" forever.
